Not that hard to believe. The aircraft isn't a fit for cargo ops due to the upper deck. Also - the aircraft would hit max weight before hitting max volume, which means you can't fill it up and make money. That's why UPS and FedEx backed out of their orders for the freighter version.

I wonder how hard it would be to add a nose door on a pax-freighter conversion. I don't think I've ever seen it done, the only 747s I've seen with nose doors have been built as freighters. I guess there's too much critical stuff up in the nose that would need to be moved.

@0:13 TF-AMI used to land in Amsterdam, under Saudi Arabia livery. Operated by Air Atlanta Icelandic. Swissport used to, and still does, take care of the turn around process. When I was having internship there for school, and I still do work there for part-time, this one came by allot. And it was in a condition that is not comparable with the results in the end of this video. I wish it was in the state when it left the factory, because all the equipment for unloading and loading was pretty beaten up. Also lots of equipment was broken. Still, pretty cool plane tho, with very awesome crew.

Back in the 80's, Eastern airlines had a few 727 combi, where airplane flew passengers during the day, and freight at night. The conversion took between 2 to 3 hrs if I remember correctly. Those poor airplanes accumulated a lot of cycles very quick. But I think that practice is no longer cost efficient. Either UPS or FedEx has purchased new freighters (second hand info). In a way a new freighter it's a better airplane because there's no window belt (weak point for corrosion), less doors, no pax comfort features to install, and the floor beams can be reinforced from scratch. The few 747 I have ridden jumpseat on, had a half upper deck with all the pax comforts, and one even had a couple of berths. But you got to have some serious volume sales to profit with such of high payload airplane.

Air France used to convert their A320 from passangers to cargo to passangers, at least 4 times a week in 80 & 90's. Daytime they flew passangers, night time cargo out of Paris for North Africa and Marseille. Fedex studied that possiblities since most cargo planes during day times are on the ground. Now with less snail mail and a greater number of flights and competition, AF stopped the process.

I would imagine for a total of $10 million... so you are paying $16 million for an aircraft that would cost you $70 million to buy new... the only down sides being maintenance and poor fuel efficiency. I am guessing on the prices.

First, the upper deck is unusable for freight, except for a few occasions where some mail bags are stored up there. You can't put it to other use, because there is no loading equipment. That said, it is good to have the option to carry additional people. That could be the costumer riding along to look after his expensive load. It could be a specially trained crew for unloading, because you can't rely on the crew at your small destination airport or probably most likely, when parts for aircraft repairs are sent out to stranded planes, qualified engineers and maybe a spare crew transported there as well, to retrieve a plane.

That is not the reason. The freight versions of passenger planes are built to the same standards. For the true reasons of such re-purposing, I recommend the recent video from wendover "How Overnight Shipping Works". With much less flight hours every day for freight, cost of ownership is more important and you rather use fuel inefficient old planes than having your expensive new planes on the ground for many hours.

Need some expert advices....... As a rule of thumb, how many minimum cycles remaining will make this conversion feasible? I think long haul airplanes like 747 only lasts approx. 30000 cycles? vs. airplanes such as 737, A320, etc which lasts approx 100000 cycles, correct? I guess if there are not enough life left, then conversion is not worth it. Correct? I heard 747 conversion cost approx. $1.5 million USD? And maybe a 3 month? Can someone confirm this? Thanks.

THE ELITE 747 When a plane takes off it's getting pressurized and it can only withstand that a few times depending on the aircraft type. Every time a plane is getting pressurized (every flight once) it's called a cycle. So every flight a plane uses a cycle. That's why a 737 is retired sooner than a 747 because it is flying like 8 times a day (so 8 cycles a day) and a 74 only once a day. So if a 747 has a lifetime of 30000 cycles it can fly 30000 times but when it already has flown 29000 of it it's not worth it anymore. Hope you understand. sorry for my English, it's not my main language.

  • @1Ocqueoc

Steve, there are a lot of 747s being "retired" by their owners, simply because of the expense of operation - especially if they are not filling every seat on every flight. Many airlines are turning to the 777 - about 50 fewer seats to fill and only 2 engines sucking up fuel
