It was Yuen Woo-ping who said, essentially, “you have to make the character have a reason to fight in order for the fight to matter.” I’m paraphrasing of course, but out of all the martial arts fight I’ve seen in my life, this one has to be the most heart-wrenching because it encapsulates by the imagery and emotion alone, what it means to sacrifice-& likewise, displays what YWP said, entirely. Even when this master was down for a majority of his life, he chose to take a stand. Does his training precede him? Absolutely. But one could even argue that, because of his actions (or lack thereof), and ignorance/stubbornness (intentionally or not) throughout his life-they may still not be without consequence. In this case, his enemy brought their fight with advanced technology (hooks)-a bane to his “old ways” of training. The beauty of his training is the fact that he can adapt whilst remaining impartial to the pain, though it shows…and keep in mind, the mission. One could even say that what he did could be a commentary on what happens when a “bigger threat” comes forth, i.e. weapons to just hands and feet; bow and arrows to swords; guns to arrows, & so on. In an army, there can be great strength in one of its meekest members (esp. in battle). For this master, and many others who sacrificed themselves, they did the equivalent of jumping on the frag grenade to save the battalion. & if that isn’t the epitome of honorable, I don’t know what is

The plot is not like that. The character had incest with his stepmother at a young age. Then his father and stepmother all committed suicide and the whole family was destroyed. So he became a wandering beggar. That metal fan was his family's weapon, representing the family's glory. The old businessman bought the fan back for him, and he took it to fight for the revolutionaries and give his family a decent end. And he was freed from guilt. The real power of the fan lies in the sharp-edged blade. But he only opened it once at the last minute. It means that he committed suicide.

The beggar was actually one of the Imperial Scholars For Martial Arts back in those days where the Imperial Manchu Court held contests to determine the champions of their lands. According to the movie story background, the beggar got the title at age 17 but subsequently fell into disgrace, shame and self-exile after he lusted after his father's newly-wed wife which destroyed his entire family and ruined his fortunes. The iron fan was his ancestral weapon but his skills were spectacularly different from most of the other characters in the movie because to be an Imperial Scholar For Martial Arts, he had to win numerous rounds against some of the greatest warriors from the Manchu Dynasty before the Imperial Manchu Court could formally bestow the title to him. If he did not waste his life drinking and smoking opium to punish himself for his sins, he might have easily fought off all the assassins and even the final villainous Manchu General as well.

난공쿠로 I've actually heard of both versions, Wu Zhuang Yuan and Wu Shao Cai, my pin yin is probably not correct for the latter. I speak cantonese, and watch cantonese movies quite a bit, rather than Mandarin. so the pinyin is not my strong suite. Also, I didn't see anywhere in the movie showing that the Manchu General was educated by the British.
@jaylim3027

@@danpt2000 I believe you meant Wu Xiu Cai 武秀才. To put it shortly, Zhuang Yuan(状元) is first place in the national examination, and Xiu Cai(秀才) is commonly referred to all scholars who took part in the examinations, regardless of rankings. Hence, the differentiation is important. First place and any examinee can be very very different in capabilities.

It means that he committed suicide.

to be fair he did try to just walk past the Beggar without having to finish him (Probably out of respect for his might?) and even pointed his sword at Beggar telling him stop. Well after all that he got his pigtail grabbed and cut off and i think i read somewhere that is one of the greatest insult to a Manchu man so its kinda justified how he got pissed and acted like that.
Beautiful parable of he who gives his life for his friends.

They’re not really his friends. In fact out of all the “bodyguards”, he never actually met the others before. He only showed up because the old master requested him in return of his heirloom. He didn’t asked about the purpose or cared about their cause. The return of his family’s iron fan was the return of his glorious self and past
I'm might sound stupid but this is the most beautiful Asian artist or Asian expendables ever seen very beautiful message to the world

I want to say the General tried to avoid a fight with the Beggar in respects of his bravery and skills. Also, at the same time he would prefer a fair fight. Seeing as the Beggar was already so injured perhaps the General didn't see it as a fair fight. From the way the Beggar looked, the General would've easily killed the Beggar.

@@wymmyw8744 Right I see what you're saying. I'm not an expert on Chinese history but I am familiar with the Manchurian takeover but the point I was making was the beggar knew by doing that.. it would trigger him. He wanted to hold them off as much as he can.
Unfortunately, he couldn't stand the last five assassins and their capture hooks. Yet, the enemies' leader had to show himself finally.
Rest In Peace The Beggar.
Best fight seen

If u watch this whole movie. Its more than just good action but a very sad story behind it of how each hero even Donnie Yen sacrificed themselves for the sake of independence. Superb action scene, showing a man who knows he's gonna die 99% but doesn't back down nevertheless. And rightfully so, he doesn't win after being slashed, stabbed, disemboweled and so on but goes down a righteous man. HOWEVER.... ...being the disgusting Gwai Lo i am, would back him up with brute and honourless firepower, just to even the odds a bit.
