Chris Rock made a vicious joke at Jada's expense on one of the most important nights of her and her husband's life, when he was pedicted to win the Oscar. A double blow. Will Smith, who is much larger than Chris Rock, could probably have broken his jaw with one fist blow. Smith showed restraint and that he was making a symbolic defense of his wife by delivering only a smack that did not even knock Chris Rock off his feet. Smith was justified. The sympathy and even praise for the very talented but compulsively mean-spirited, petty Rock is really mystifying.

The biggest problem we face in America is the lack of respect for one another Lack of respect can lead to some really terrible problems and that's not a joke

Respect, I agree and hope jada learns some! In fact that joke was one of the most flattering considering what he could’ve joked about amongst the mounting material between this couple, yet didn’t. No the issues of today is the lack ppl either were raised to have or chose not to have and that is coping skills and acceptance that others don’t always agree. Today it’s too easy to be offended and play victim to anything, cancel naysayers and claim opposing views are bigoted, etc. and it’s quite sad. In a country where our freedom of speech is so threatened that biden considered forcing language change for pronouns onto free ppl, considered and even proposed criminalizing offensive speech… we need comedy to bridge the gap of differences and disputes and laugh at what’s funny, laugh at what isn’t and accept being offended! Besides smith clearly enjoyed the joke, laughed at it and then got offended and lashed out and that’s unacceptable! Chris should be protected not attacked

Chris had a history of being in physical situations since he was a kid. His restraint physically and words was from experience. Strength sometimes is from what you don't do.

I was proud of Chris Rock because of his background for acting so strong and not retaliating in any way, verbal or physical while Will was getting all the congratulations when if it was anyone else would have been seen out right away. Will played it for all it was worth and I think Chris really was the bigger man and should be proud of himself.

Will' s reaction goes deeper than Jada's hair joke. As he stated in his apology video, there's a history between them. Remember at a previous edition of the Oscars when Jada said that she would boycott the Oscars because there weren' t enough African-American people involved? And Chris called her out by saying that she had not been invited in the first place? Basically calling her a hypocrite. Then he went on to criticise Will for complaining that he hadn' t received enough prizes for his roles (implying racial discrimination) and Chris suggested that while that probably wasn' t fair, neither was Will earning 20 million dollars for one of his roles. And yes, Jada's joke was unfortunate, but I think she looks amazing with or without hair, and if you didn' t know about her condition, you'd simply be joking about her sense of style. Then there's that joke about Bardem who was really directed at Jada being jealous of Will for his career.

The joke was very tame. It was a simple short joke. It wasn't even insulting or anything. In fact, when G.I. Jane came out, Demi Moore was lauded for portraying a strong, powerful woman, and many women were apparently empowered. It could have been worse if Chris Rock compared Jada to say, Uncle Fester from the Addams family or something. Will Smith was even laughing pleasantly about the joke. Then Jada gives him the evil eye and then he turns around and acts as if the joke was the most horrible thing ever and acts as if from the very beginning he didn't appreciate the joke and proceeded to assault Chris Rock! So you saying that it goes deeper, that is confusing. If Jada didn't signal her displeasure at the tame joke, Will Smith would have continued to laugh and enjoy the moment. It was just a case of, "Hey, stop laughing, I don't like the joke, go do something about it. now!" All of those problems they have with their marriage and life, in general, came out INCIDENTALLY because people just wanted to know more about them due to the Oscar situation. And Will Smith is just using all of it to escape and justify what he did to Chris Rock

I have a feeling the combatants had a recent conversation about what could be joked about; hence Rock remarking after the joke -"What, that wasn't bad?" directly to someone in the audience or the audience in general (recruitment?). After seeing plenty of brawls, it seemed Smith looked entitled and determined the way a bully goes after the same victims over and over. The big tell was when he turned his back and walked off... a fighter never turns their back after provoking an opponent but Smith knew Rock either was incapable or would refuse to fight back, allowing him to strut back to his mate like a peacock looking for reward. I look at it this way: had the presenter been Dwayne the rock Johnson, Will Smith would not have got out of his seat. Shame on Will Smith and he does not need this channel making excuses for him.

I respect chris so much in this debacle. He handled himself like a true professional and a gentleman. I've always liked will too and it was sad to see him sink to this low, no matter why he did what he did

When you understood that Chris was traumatized by bullying you will have an even greater respect and appreciation for his reaction.

Sadly, Chris Rock was bullied terribly in his youth and was physically/sexually assaulted by some of his attackers. His ability to react to this assault the way he did amazes me. Some have said he didn’t respond physically because of his years of powerlessness as a victim, but I’d like to think he simply chose the high road, physically and verbally, in his response. And in doing so, has fared much better than Will Smith.

This is really a learning experience for me to watch you as a Professional body language analysts. I have always been fascinated with this subject, and from this video i am inspired! Man let's give a compassion award to Chris Rock. Comedians all know how to rip hecklers to shreds verbally and Jada and Will are a VERY target rich environment. Most comedians would have murdered Will on the spot. I suspect Chris sensed that things were in a bad shape mentally with Will and he didn't want to make it worse.

That's how I felt as well. And I know when I read that they think I’m being mean to Jada and thinking insensitively… I’m not I do recognize, alongside you, that Chris decided not to take a step backwards into immaturity and making it about himself, defending what he said, using the stage as a boxing ring (verbal or physical) attacking Will to make himself look more witty at the moment or retaliate. Chris just kept moving forward. Even after Will yelled out the first time, Chris tried to smooth things over like "relax, Will"... and then Will repeats it again... and that's when Chris didn't want anymore of this and just resumed moving forward and pushing along because (yes, I'm sure he was uncomfortable) but he didn't want this to escalate any further and just wanted the night to continue with what was actually planned. But Chris had multiple chances to take more shots at Will - heck, he had the mic. Now eventually the stage guys would have eventually intervened and I'm sure that's part of what Chris was thinking when "he's weighing the consequences"... but it could have been so easy for Chris to just ignore all that for the current moment of going back after Will, verbally - and he didn't. So yes, I do give Rock a lot of credit... even for a seasoned comedian... "I could..." immediately became ~ *I won't* ~ He came out of that situation a lot better than some could have expected. I realize that a joke like that could easily have been taken as offensive, such as we saw from Jada’s reaction. But when Chris is up there just making light-hearted remarks - not intending to hit anyone on a personal insult it shouldn’t have been received with such distain by Jada. Chris didn’t mean it personally as if to say ‘your stuck with that disease “haha”. To my knowledge many reports Chris wasn’t even aware. When your in that room, especially toward the front you just have to realize that you could be part of a joke and roll with the punches… Chris clearly exemplified that notion - literally Don’t misunderstand me - I realize was alopecia does to a person… and how it affects how they feel about themselves and how it cuts into their self-confidence (as I mention in a comment further below in this thread of how Will could have responded). Plus I feel that with all that money they have Jada could have easily bought an expensive wig. A friend of mine has an autoimmune disorder and she doesn’t have any hair at all… not even eyebrows and she couldn’t even touch the money that Jada and Will have and yet she draws On eyebrows and wears a wig that I didn’t even know about until my wife told me - as it looked so realistic. But Jada took it way too personal… and all she had to do was look over at Will and change his humorous mood to prompt him to do something irrational. Obviously we don’t know if she said anything to him. But I have a hard time believing that Will needed time to process that Joke… he had the same time as Jada and she immediately switch emotions and Will was still laughing. The only thing that peaks my interest on Chris’ side is this being the second time that he poked fun at Jada… (2016 Awards “wasn’t invited”) aside from that - he was just carrying on as any comedian during these awards… and from my understanding Rock had a whole list of jokes that he didn’t even touch because of that moment - up till then, he was only doing improv before led into his comedy routine he had planned the night. But it all went south and we never got a chance to hear them.

I believe his inflection on "abuse" was directed towards Jada. Being involved with a series of narcissists, you get better at spotting them. I believe this anger carried over from her cheating, who she cheated with, and her lack of accountability. Not to mention, she followed this with embarrassing and shaming him on his own show, going into vivid detail of her affair...all the while, playing the victim. She also showed no concern during the incident at the award ceremony, and laughed joyfully as she watched her husband destroy his career in front of an audience of his peers. Yes... I'm sure she acquired copious amounts of fuel that particular night. The fact that Will stayed with her after such "abuse" indicates that she can still manipulate him emotionally.

Will Smith reportedly took his pants off outside his marriage on more than one occasion. I don't think it helps anyone to gain empathy or maturity to hear one side of a private matter, so I don't think her behavior was wise. However, we ALL still live in a sexist society of double standards, and Pinkett-Smith may have felt internal pressure to justify her expression of passion outside her marriage as a matter of love and alienation from Will and not just as a simple matter of physical attraction and availability. Furthermore, my understanding was that she took up with the other guy at a time when she and Will Smith were separated...

When Chris said “ooh, I can, ok…” after getting slapped, I guarantee you he knew some things about will smith that would’ve probably ruined his career. That’s why he stopped himself. It’s crazy the amount of self control Chris has. Not only physically or mentally but also emotionally. Chris rock has ptsd from being bullied and immediately Chris was about to punch him, but immediately said no, then he wanted to get him back with words and mentally stopped himself and then he wanted to explode but emotionally stopped himself and said this was the greatest night in television. Usually when someone, especially with ptsd from being hit by bullies as a kid, gets slapped like that, they either black out and go nuts or just like when the doctor hits your knee and your foot kicks, automatically hits back without even thinking about it. But he showed a level 100 type of restraints.

Great video!!! You were spot on, just missing like a lot of us the turbulence in Will and Jada’s marriage that is clearly part of his reaction. Thank you for such insight on what happened that day, I saw it live and I was so confused and couldn’t believe the event as it unfolded in front millions of people and darken what it supposed to be a remarkable night for a lot winners and also changed my opinion of Will Smith, until this day I can’t see any of his movies again 🥺

I love your videos I recently discovered you and they are thoroughly enlightening and very entertaining. There was another comment here by someone who mentioned usually you will only watch 5-10 mins of a video and be done with it but this is not the case with this clip. All your analysis of body language is spot on and I’m loving learning about all these tell tell signs. If I could only add one thing, I would have loved to have your input as to what Jada’s body language was at the exact moment Will hit Chris.

It looked like Chris was leaning forward because he thought Will was going to whisper something to him. I don’t believe he fathomed the thought that Will was coming to the stage to attack him. But how Chris handled it was freaking AMAZING. A true MAN OF REAL STATUS.

Instead, he chose to stay in the marriage and even essentially defend Jada's affair. There's a lot of discussion nowadays about the strength of the black family unit. If this was Will's way of stating that THIS is what black families should aspire to be, he actually gave the perfect example of WHY so many in society feel that black families are dysfunctional when he had the perfect literal stage to send a positive message

Hey just found your channel recently and love it! I think I like this because Ive had observe and analyze body language as part of my job … but different contexts. I worked with persons who couldn’t express verbally what they needed or how they were feeling, so observations were quite important. So….the part where Chris has his hands behind his back and stomps his foot down forward it did look like that he was preparing for agression as if he kind of knew he was going to get something. Like someone who is in a boxing match or martial arts, they take their stance to make sure they’re stable , slightly leaned forward and have their fists up to protect their face. Chris couldn’t be sure what was going to happen so he makes sure that he’s in a proper stance , slightly leaned forward just in case. He couldn’t really put his fists up to protect himself in case that’s not what was going to happen lol. I don’t think Chris had any intention of resulting to violence, because he was on live tv but he was going to be ready to take whatever’s coming.I think he knew WS was not walking up there to talk, that could have been done after. I hope this made some sense 😊

To hear you break this down and watch it is simply amazing… new subbie and I think I’m about to slide down a rabbit hole!

I was wondering what the “I could…” meant, but you make a good point, he was thinking of some really powerful and digging jokes he could crush Will’s soul with, but he didn’t want to go there and instead took the classy route. Kudos to Chris Rock.

One thing you missed talking about: Why did he feel the need to say something after the slap? I feel like it angered him that Chris Rock dealt with the slap so professionally and was still smiling. He wanted to teach him a lesson and it didn't work. That frustrated him so extremely hard that he couldn't control his emotion at all anymore. He COMPLETELY collapsed. The walk on stage was pretty elegant, but as he was sitting there shouting and almost crying you saw his mental breakdown.

Thank you for the very well thought analysis... I'm not body language expert....but noticed something that Chris leaned forward expecting Will Smith to tell him something also in addition of trying to figure out what's about to happen

My main question is…how the hell was Will Smith allowed to stay in the audience, let alone receive an award? He should have been black listed like anyone else would be in that situation. Will Smith and his wife Jada are so entitled to think while sitting in an audience where jokes are being said they are above having to sit through them with a smile on their face. What a pathetic situation. There were no repercussions for Will. Instead he was rewarded for his violent behavior. Chris Rock is infinitely a better man than Will Smith. Denzel Washington should have told him how wrong Will was for his actions. He took a joke as “abuse”. What a ridiculous justification of his poor behavior.

I’m very impressed with the way Chris Rock handled this situation. He took it like a man and he handled it with the utmost professionalism.

Re: Will Smith's delayed reaction to the joke-he stated long before this that he has ADHD. Auditory processing issues are very common in those with ADHD so there can be a delay while the brain catches up to what the ears heard and interprets the information...

I love your analysis. Shows compassion for each person in their humanity. I heard something different in the pronoun shift at the end from “we” to “you.” I heard it as a “collective You,” which we often use when uncomfortable, and seeking affirmation - another sort of recruitment. AND I felt he could be alluding to all the various sorts of abuse that might be part of climbing the Hollywood ladder, and his repressed anger just unconsciously chose that moment to express itself.

Will Smith's wife does not have alopecia alopecia is when they're spots a baldness she is shaved her head on purpose despite her husband. And that's the whole problem between those two they are fighting and taking it out on others

Rock had years and years of experience getting bullied and abused--severely. He's spoken about it at length in previous interviews as well as being in therapy and how he's been dealing with it all. He was just put right back into that position after having climbed so far in life. I can only imagine what he's going through trying to process this.

Hearing the body language analysis of this, it sounds like, as you said, that Chris is right back to his bullied days in that instance. And I think Chris is immediately seething but his years as a comedian conditioned him to keep his composure. Doubt that many of us without such conditioning could have maintained such composure.

Damn now that you mention it like that I feel really bad this happened to Chris. Especially not publicly like this

I feel like Will's flip into fight mode wasn't because of a delayed understanding of the joke.. it was triggered by a sense of insecurity as the man in his marriage, and it was purely his masculine fighting to show that he will right here right now prove his fierce fear of his wife not seeing him as 'enough'. If he was secure in the relationship, he would not have needed to go to battle right then physically. There was no immediate physical threat. The threat was, whether or not his wife would approve of his response being satisfactory. If he was secure in his relationship, he would have reassured Jada in a more intimate way.. nothing to prove to anybody else. The way he struts off stage with his smirk, is not just about putting Rock in his place, but also proud of the evidence he has just displayed of how worthy he is of his wife. This is coming from interviews I have watched of the 2, and how insecure Will seems to be in their marriage dynamic.. a fear of not being good/worthy enough for her unconditional committed love

Right. And the producer/ director didn’t put down their headset…call security…approach Chris and STOP the show. They aired it. So many mistakes made that night. So depressing. Excellent video. Very informative. Body language is so complex!

Installed these on a riding mower kzread.infoUgkxetgfkJxfdT_B2vGYP-uNTLaBbim9OKTD . They were sharp out of the box, although I've never liked blade edges that were coated...not quite as sharp as I personally want. Using my belt sander, I removed the coating from the cutting edges and refined the edge enough to shave with them. So far, after three runs, these blades are holding up as expected. Even after hitting a few fallen 1/2 inch or so branches, the edges are still sharp as heck. No edge dings, no warping, etc. As far as installing them, the cutouts were of the proper size and shape to fit my aging Craftsman mower. Very satisfied.

Is it possible that Will heard that Chris intended to do the joke and he expressly disapproved of it. Will was told the joke would be taken out so he got super pissed that Chris went ahead and performed what he was forbidden to do? I think that would explain the intensity of his anger and why he immediately resorted to physical violence.

How Chris Rock handled the situation is exactly why he was hired to host the Oscars. Great job!!!

I really wanted to get a take on that. The look she gave Chris Rock, that daggers look, she has given it MANY times to her family when Will is doing his social media stuff and on her own red table show. Well before she was diagnosed. I have no study in this stuff, but I think Will has some PTSD and that look and the stress of his category coming up probably triggered him to snap. I actually feel really bad for him.

It's amazing how Chris has created a differentiate between him and will that you get joked and you became physical and I got slapped but didn't do anything physically and verbally . That different how to react to your bullies. Chris has earn huge respect for that .

Your take on this incident was exactly the way I was seeing it.

It’s pretty clear to see that she was either directly involved or knew way more than what she said. It’s so sad to see this unfold and see her free keeping lying

Smith is bullied by jada 24/7 watch their table talks, she's a textbook vulnerable narcissist. Hurts him constantly yet always plays the victim. Poor Will, actually. That's why he's so emotional and conflicted. Ironically he was even manipulated into defending his bully...😒

Did anyone also notice how Chris Rock took two steps back right after the slap? Could be indicative of him holding himself back showing self restraint. Nonetheless, props to the guy for his professionalism.

At first I thought it was staged just because, but now I know and feel for the actors and actresses. It can be stressful having the world at your doorstep every single day.

It means absolutely nothing, and it doesn't even matter who did the same thing xx time ago. To think that it is staged, because something similar happened somewhere else... is one big nonsense! Is it staged? As mentioned in the video, I totally agree with him. It is almost impossible that everything that happened was staged. Here, you can see how some people are. They take a similar case that happened a long time ago, and since it was staged, then their explanation is that this event is also 100% staged. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Some people are so smart that they can see the future even if there is no evidence for it. 🤣🤣

The most amazing thing on display was the lack of spine of the Academy and the audience.

@sunny I have to believe you didn’t hear the fact the Rock didn’t know about her medical condition otherwise you wouldn’t have said that. I can’t speak for all women but if he suggested I would get the roll to play a badass like GI Jane I would be thrilled! She needs to get over herself and remember what is truly important….. she is ALIVE and has been blessed in life and she should not treat her husband the way she does and should not raise her children to brag when their father attacks someone else among other things. She is absolutely stunning even without hair and should be grateful for all she has instead of being a b@$*h!!!!

So what happened was this. A few years ago when she told Will out of nowhere, as well as the entire world that she's been having an affair, and in that same moment she told Will "If you loved me more, you would have known". I think what's happening here is that since then, he's having to do all of the crazy things in order to "prove" to her that he loves her "enough" to be validated. He thought the joke was funny because it was extremely light humored and quick. But her, having her own problems and insecurities about her hair loss issue of which she obviously can't get over and needs to work on, he saw that look on her face and did what he felt he HAD to do to show her that he "loved her enough". This.... this is what a toxic, negative, mentally and emotionally manipulative relationship looks like. I feel sorry for Will, but he still has to take responsibility for his actions, be they of his own choosing, or the choosing of his manipulative, awful wife.

Probably knew that it would have escalated the situation further. Imagine if Chris would have come back and said something really embarrassing to Will. They would have been rolling around the stage in a full fledge brawl. Chris new that. He was probably actually thinking about his career and thought better of instigating Will even more. Chris is the only winner here.

@@sO_RoNerY @Sir_Axiom sorry, there are COUNTLESS people, articles, and commentators, who are saying that Chris is the better man in this situation, and has earned even more of their respect for him. Even people who stated that they didn't even like Chris at first is saying this. Also, for the record, assaulting someone is not a "part of life." It is an cowardly act, is not normal, and should have never happened.

Protect does NOT mean attack. If he were my partner I would be embarrassed. I appreciate this take- it felt far more self serving to me- it’s gonna be hard for me to see him as a decent human again, anytime soon.

(I realize I'm super late to the game lol, I'm on a behavioral arts kick) I definitely agree w your analysis, but I wanna add that I also read Chris Rock's stance when he noticed Will approaching as sort of bracing for a potential confrontation by grounding his feet, but trying to communicate non-aggression to Will w the hands behind his back, like trying to calm him down by not standing overtly aggressively/defensively

Chris is used to having self restraint while being slap. I saw online somewhere that they found audio on him from a couple months ago when he was on a podcast saying he was brutally bullied as a child and he is afraid of his anger because when he finally stood up to his bully he almost killed the bully.

I listened to that interview when it posted and it's what I thought about not long after seeing that slap live on TV. I was mad to see people comforting Will after what he did. Now I'll look at it as them calming down someone having a mental breakdown. He should have been escorted out.

Something I didn't hear mentioned was the fact that Chris Rock has a condition that's similar to Asperger's, called Non-Verbal Learning Disorder, which makes it difficult for him to interpret non-verbal (body language) cues. Because of this condition, for example, it is highly unlikely that Chris realized that Will Smith was upset, let alone coming up to assault him. And this fact makes me all the more furious over the attack.

But it does put him at a disadvantage when he's about to be attacked (as does the fact that he's 60 years old, quite a bit slighter stature and 5 inches shorter than Will Smith, who trained to play Muhammed Ali). And this is a fact that Will Smith took advantage of. People who defend attacking a comedian for telling a joke need counseling immediately.

11:40 this analysis of how Chris Rock showed restraint is beautiful. It's incredible how Chris Rock kept his composure and was self aware of not only the setting but the horrible actions of Will Smith. Dude could have destroyed Will Smith with words too but didn't!

Chris Rock is a comedian, and everybody in showbiz knows that you will get roasted multiple times in life. The great individuals always know how to laugh at themselves. Much love to Chris Rock who handled the big baby like a pro. However, I'm still not convinced that it was staged because it feels off and these are actors.

More mature or not Chris Rock makes ignorant, racist, and immature jokes all the time.

Will's reaction had the opposite effect than he wanted. He elevated Chris Rock's status, lowered his own. And caused millions to remember the joke that would have quickly been forgotten. This violent reaction solved nothing.

when Will accepted a Grammy years ago, he noted in his acceptance speech that he doesn't curse in his raps or talk about violence and still won a grammy. This behavior goes completely against the image he spent years building. therefore I don't think it was staged.

I've never really been a fan of Chris Rock as a comedian/actor, but that made me respect him more as a person. Such an intelligent response.

Great analysis of the situation. Such a shame this happened. He’s a great actor, very skilled and always a joy to watch on the big screen. His action was not right by any means but as someone who suffers from an autoimmune disorder and knows how helpless people feel when they can’t control symptoms and especially for a female to suffer from hairloss in today’s society where hair is so important for women. I know this condition must be devastating for Jada. And I am sure Will knows how devastated she is but what choice does she have than to be strong. So i am not surprised about his reaction. And yes, we live in a society where it’s okay to make fun at someone else’s expense and they are supposed to just take it. So the issues in this situation are much more deep rooted.

Pfft, if she was so upset and self-conscious about it she could have worn a wig, instead she's strutting around like its a fashion statement. Also, she has her own little show, Red Table, where she exposes and talks about not only her own life but plenty of others and she seems like the type of person who always has to be the top dog in any situation, including justifying her affair with her SON'S FRIEND, she is not a fragile flower. This is a woman who cannot laugh at herself and cannot stand not being in control- save your sympathy for those who deserve it

Totally agree and a smart comment. Everybody knows that these shows are basically Hollywood roasts. Shows she has no sense of humor. Over the many decades previous, no one has ever over reacted like this. It’s comedy and they all make fun of each other. It’s expected. Everything about that family is weird beyond words.

This scene takes on a whole new meaning a year later in light of all we now know about the pretence that was going on between the Smiths and the public at that time. What exactly was he defending with a wife who hadn't lived with him since 2016?

I disagree with you about it being a particularly nasty joke. Yeas it is from a medical condition, but I personally only knew that after the slap. It's possible Chris didn't know about it being a medical condition either. It doesn't look like chemo or something, it literally looks like she buzz cut it 🤷 And 2nd in Chris rock's words. "It was a GI Jane joke!" He didn't say anything particularly mean, just like hey you remind me of GI Jane. Not a particularly funny joke tbh, so it's even possible it was improvised on the spot as a very soft blow that he didn't realize was actually a trigger for her.

Will's slap was about himself, he wanted to show his wife that he was more of a man than the young entanglement. It wasn't about her medical condition. The joke was used by the Smiths as a tool to play out their bad relationship. Now, we know their dirty laundry. Before the slap, I didn't know anything about what was going on between the two adulterers. Or, maybe it was just one, whichever.
