Bodrum antik çağda Karya Bölgesinin en önemli liman kentlerinden biridir. Burada tarihin babası olarak tanınan Herodotos ve tarihin ilk kadın amirali I.Artemisia gibi pek çok önemli kişi yaşamıştır.
Bodrumlu tarihçi Heredotos'un kaynaklarına göre Bodrum'da yaşam M.Ö. 1.000 yılında Dorlar tarafından şu an kalenin bulunduğu bölgeye kurulan şehirle başlamıştır. Şehir daha sonra Lidyalıların ve Perslerin egemenliğine girmiş olsa da en parlak dönemlerinden birini Karya satraplığının egemenliği altındayken yaşamıştır. M.Ö. 334 yılında Büyük İskender'in gerçekleştirdiği fetihler sırasında yıkılıp yakılan Bodrum, uzun bir süre boyunca toparlanamamış, İskender'in ölümünden sonra bir süre generaller tarafından yönetilmiştir. MÖ 133’te Romalıların himayesi altında olan Bodrum, Roma’nın ikiye bölünmesinden sonra (MS 324) ise Aphrodisias Metropolitliği’ne bağlı bir piskoposluk olarak varlığını sürdürmüştür.

Although the city later came under the rule of the Lydians and Persians, it experienced one of its brightest periods when it was under the rule of the Carian satrapy. B.C. Bodrum, which was destroyed and burned during the conquests of Alexander the Great in 334, could not recover for a long time and was ruled by generals for a while after Alexander's death. Bodrum, which was under the protection of the Romans in 133 BC, continued its existence as a diocese under the Metropolitanate of Aphrodisias after the division of Rome into two (324 AD).
