Bodie - America's Largest unrestored Ghost Town
The biggest Ghost Town in the West... home to the "Bad man from Bodie" - unrestored and left in a state of "Arrested Decay" - Bodie, California. At over 8,000 feet in Elevation, its one of the highest and driest, and was one of the richest, largest, and most wicked Gold mining towns in the west - "Last of the boomtowns" - If you're looking for an epic abandoned ghost town, you can't do much better than Bodie.
At it's peak in 1880 it had an estimated 10,000 full time residents, with thousands of pack animals to boot. Without water, or lumber, or farms, everything had to be channeled up the mountains and packed in to keep the dozens of mines and multiple stamp mills running, as last-chance prospectors and miners poured in from the western sierras "played out" gold rush towns, and from the comstock to the east.
Full of history and mystery, the town of Bodie is now a California State Historic Park, available to visit for anyone hardy enough to climb the 8,000 feet and travel down the gravel road along the hills! It doesn't get much more "Frontierland" than this, and there's another theme park connection waiting to be told, and its Berry interesting!

I hear you about loving Bodie. As a kid my thoughts were, “Can we go now?” When I revisited as an adult I literally said, “Just leave me here. There’s so much to explore!”
Oh my goodness London is growing up. That makes ME feel old, I can’t imagine how it makes you feel!
"I should have named YOU Horace." "I would have never forgiven you."
My parents took me here back in the 80s. Brings back memories.
Ive been watching your channel for the past 4 yrs, I just love all the ollllllllld west ghost town and Route 66 vids with so much history! Good to see London, he’s so grown up now!
GREAT video Justin :) Wonderful exploring old places with you. :) Just a note on Tin ceilings, that I looked into once for my own home :) They became popular in the 1880's as decorative for ceilings, and originally were made of steel, then tin, to try to slow down rusting. The design was to mimic epensive plaster ceilings of the time. I read somewhere, that they were liked because they illuminated the candle light at night, giving more light to rooms. Another thing I read, was that they were installed as a fire prevention because of all the open flames used for various things at the time.
I can’t believe London has a teenage mustache already! Time flies!
THANK YOU! We love the Eastern Sierras! Bodie is amazing, Thank you for taking us along!
Wow! Loved this video. I’m from Florida and not used to finding old buildings this intact and housing original furnishings. Thanks Justin and London!
My best memory of Bodie is when I was there with my Dad at the Bodie dump right there in the park a few years ago. My Dad was old enough that he helped electrify the desert and he also had a sense of history. We stood their and he pointed out different items, what they were used for, and how long ago.
I thought your sidekick was your brother. He had some classic reactions to your silliness. Haha great location and video!
The stamp mills used to run 24/7. The citizens were so used to hearing the stamp mills crushing the ore, that when they couldn't hear them, they knew something was wrong
I visited Virginia City last Thursday and went through the Ghost Town walk through. Talked with the dude that built and you came up in our conversation. He's an all around good like you. Keep up the good work my brother.
So good to see London again. Glad to see he likes your travel times together. Miss that.
I sure enjoyed the historical tour of Bodie Ghost Town. If those buildings could talk! Thanks JustinScared ☆☆☆
Nobody does a better job of historical trips than you.Great job!
I love Bodie! If you ever get the chance, hike the loop off of Saddlebag Lake. Up above Steelhead Lake (part of the loop) is an old tungsten mine. The tungsten was mined then processed in Bodie. Very cool stuff! I've never stopped by Dog Town up in the Sierras... Only Santa Monica!
(#85) LONDON is so big now...WOW!!! NICE to see you bond with him again.
Justin great job. I took my son there a couple years ago. we spent about 4 hours out there as well. Alot to see & explore for sure. regretted not checking out the cemetary but we were too tired afterward. Maybe next time.
Holy moly! Did London age as quickly as Bodie?!? So happy to see you 3 healthy and doing well in all the great recent vids. Thanks for still kicking out killer content! Be well :)
I went here as a kid maybe 15 years ago! I was too young to appreciate it lol. Btw you guys remind me of Goofy and Max and that's amazing
I LOVE and miss Bodie!!! I have been going there every year since I was a baby. I can't wait to go back. Thank you for this video!
Bodie is awesome! So cool to see an old town frozen in time.
My girlfriend and I were sitting against the wall by the gas pump 27 yrs ago. It brings back memories of her she's gone now. all I have are memories. Of her and this town she took me too. It was nice to see the wall where we sat together. After all these yrs thank you God bless
I hope you do even longer videos, especially of Boddie, and places like it I could watch these all day .
I WAS LITERALLY JUST THINKING "im bored i wish we has a new justin video."
Thanks so much for walking us through! I was just hoping the other day that you would visit Bodie. It holds a lot of childhood memories of visiting with my family! I have never gotten tired of looking at the old buildings!
I love these longer videos. Thanks for the great upload 👍 and I hope Julio found a ton of gold down there!
This is the best , most thorough documentation I have seen on Bodie so far.
Hell of a history teacher, bub. Damn fine storytellin'
Sweet! Was in the area not too long ago ... almost got washed out by a flash flood on the way back to Central California. By the way, my dad took me to Bodie when I was a teenager. Great memories. Cool to see you doing the same.
Justin! Makes me so happy to see London growing into a very sweet young man and your buddy. Love seeing you together. My father never knew how to be a father so it's so moving to see you guys . Bless you and cherish eachother . We have been watching you for years and we remember when London was still tiny.
Awesome video!! My family and I have been visiting Bodie since I was kid and when my parents were kids. Very special place 😎
Love Bodie! Thank you for the great tour!!!
Taking my kids on a two week road trip thanks to you Thank you
Bodie is the best ghost town to visit. Worth the trip.
Something about your adventures always puts a smile on my face
Always a great time with you. Thanks
Man, I love videos like this, keep up the good work.
Justin & London - thanks for the tour & history lesson. I felt like I was right there. Hard to complain about pandemic life when you see how people lived 100 years ago in this mining town in the middle of nowhere.
Very cool tour of the city. It's amazing those buildings are still standing.
Favorite place in California. Keep up the good work Justin. Fun fact, Bodie is the only place in the continental United States with a dry-summer subarctic climate. Are you going to swing down to Mono Lake? Get some Ribs at Bodie Mike's in Lee Vining too!
Living for the postcredits 🤣. First laughter of the day. Thanks for the detailed look into a ghost town Justin! Hope you do the other part you talked about soon.
Your kid is flipping awesome!! I love that he is as in to history as you are. Great video, as always!
Wish that was longer. Fascinating and fun!!!!
LOVE YOUR VIDEO. GOOD RESEARCH & HELP FROM LONDON. WOWHE'S GETTING BIG. YOUR TRAVELS TO ALL THE PLACES I VISITED IN THE PAST. NOW I REVISIT & SEE THE CHANGES SINCE THE EARLY 50'S THRU YOUR VIDEOS. THANKS!!!

Loving these ghost town tease episodes Justin! I’m really excited about the future , more detailed episodes to coms. It was great seeing London and Seth in a video again. Great work! Thank you for all you do.👍🏼🤘🏼😎
Cool Vid!
Fantastic, as always !
Always fascinating Justin. I love your videos!
What a huge ghost town!I have been to many smaller ones!
On Facebook every Saturday the park ranger covers one of the buildings live.Hats off to you for all your knowledge on Bodie. You really did your research.
Awesome! I’ve always wanted to go to Bodie, but this was probably as close as I’ll ever get! I love being able to actually walk through history too👍🏼 Thanks for sharing😊 God Bless🙏
Awesome, wish I still lived out that way to check out the ghost towns!
Never feel bad about going overtime! I really REALLY like these longer videos with more in depth stuff. I would love to have more longer episodes like this on places like Chaco Canyon.
Bodie is a very interesting place. Cool video.
Been to Bodie a few times. Nice to see it without having to leave the comfort of sheltering at home. Hope to return soon. Love how good your videos look. Almost like being there.
Next time you may want to leave the kid at home. Keep em coming, love the historical content.
That Moore & Co bottle you picked up was someone’s Bourbon bottle. You found someone’s possible last drink! Keep up the good work Justin.
Very cool. Your channel gave me the inspiration to start my own. Thanks
Thanks for the video Justin! I need to get out to Bodie!
Been there. Great spot. Nice archaeo find, there. Jesse Moore-Hunt & Co. was a Kentucky liquor producer that sold whiskey and bourbon in those brown bottles. :)
i love these videos, going through a difficult time in my life. they are so different from any other youtuber. keep them up, enjoying the little things in life.
Bodie is nice to see in the winter
my parents took 2 of my younger cousins & myself to visit Bodie around 2005. it was hot as hell out there, but really quiet and interesting looking around this ghost town.
I would love to visit the place. I'd heard about Bodie in school. I was born and raised in California and always wanted to take a look at town. By the way, I was in grade school in 1962. In kindergarten. 🙂 I went to Bransford Elementry school in Fairfield California. Showing my age. Ole but young at heart and can still get around. 🙂. I love walking places like Bodie. It would be a nice place to do some sketching. As always Justin, great and educational video.
What a great informative vid. We wanted to go out and enjoy the day here in Folsom, visiting the dreaded mother in law! But while out driving we noticed not one person out of the several we saw out and about, was wearing a mask! 😱 So thank you for sharing your outdoor experience!
Justin, you're NVTS I say...😂 Love the grass tenders. 🐂🐂 I remember relatives born in 1900, tell stories of this place. Saw pics they had that looked Ancient!! 😐😒 But then I ain't no spring chicken....😄 Still say you're NVTS, but I like your channel. 👍 Sparked many old memories for me. Thanks Kiddo ! 😎
I love. The new. Vlog.
I enjoy watching your videos on the ghost towns
Cool place! I love old stuff like this.
Great video Justin!
Dude, I'm only about midway through but I love these videos. Really informative and you really get a feeling for how much you love these places. I've never been to Bodie, so this has been incredibly informative. Two places I recommend you visit: Prescott, Arizona (where I live!) and Cloudcroft, New Mexico. Lots of history, really unique places. Obviously it can wait until after the coronavirus is less of a threat, but it'd be sweet to see your take on both places.
That looks like a neat place to see. Plus, I didn't know you had a son. He seems like a good kid. Do you get to take him on some of your adventures?
Love your video dude glad you are having fun
So sick! I need to go on a touring trip with ya 🤣🤣
I used to visit Bodie in late July and a couple of time it snowed. It did not stick but the weather is extreme up there. You just have to make sure your auto is serviced and come prepared.
I'm glad you went to Bodie! It's amazing! Ans also, are there really no comments or is this just me?
One of my favorites spots. I've seen photographs of the fire that destroyed much of the town. So sad. There is a terrific book called, "Mining Camp Days" by Emil Billeb. It's about living and working in Bodie and other mining towns in that area. Looking at the video of the stuctures that used tin cans and metal ceiling tiles, it's obvious that tin snips were a necessity
You and your fam bless me bro..Thanks!
Ive been here!!!! So true when I think of Ghost Town this is what I think of ! I was like 12 years old. Thanks for sharing this. I will have to go back soon
Looks great! Might take my family out there now.
London has grown so much! I'm sure he's going to grow into a marvelous young man with his father raising him :)

Will you look at the size of London!
This is so fascinating Justin. Living here in the UK we have interesting history but this whole town is just fascinating. I love the ‘make bananas in every outhouse!!’ Comment!! Thoroughly enjoyed this, thank you,
I so enjoyed this!
Very cool and informative video 👍
Awesome video!
great video thanks for sharing
Did that road to Bodie in a school bus as part of my 8th grade trip. One of my favorite places I have ever walked around
I find all this history fascinating. I am much more interested in how people lived rather than kings and queens in history. Plus when I was young western films were really popular, so another reason for enjoying seeing a town of the times. Amazing it lasted as long as it did before being totally abandoned. Great to see Landon and it looks like he is taking after his dad with this interest in history and the great outdoors, even if he did get a little fed up after a while. I hope your mouth settles down soon Landon. 4 of my grandchildren had the braces(in UK) so I know it can be very uncomfortable. But it will be very worth it in the end. I have a very sore mouth for a different reason so I do sympathise.
Justin my friend, you have a magnificent screw loose. Awesome video.
Great video had no idea that place existed !
🐺First! Love the videos Justin!🐺
Too funny! I wish I had a tenth of your energy.
He super shy and quiet compared to you haha! 😂 seemed like fun!
Hey Justin, Imagine an interactive version of a Bodie tour. A 360-degree video walkthrough down the streets and if you click on a particular house to select it, the owner pops up and encourages you to future explore their property with an in-depth tour of its history (all done in historical character via Justin in costumes)
I live in Florida and took a trip to Nevada, while we were there we went to Bodie. I highly recomend it as a mst visit place.
Thank you.
