Bodhran Basics - Part Ten: Single-Ended Rolls

Музыка

While I mostly use double-ended rolls in my playing, I've been incorporating single-ended ornaments more and more. In this lesson we're going to talk a bit about using them and a couple of exercises to help get the hang of them.

Great explanation Matt! Thank you for taking the time to record this. Been playing the Bodhran for many a year but have never learnt the single ended roll. To the practice room!

Thank you Matt. Just got my first Bodrahn to accompany my mandolin. Hoping to get my gf to develop some interest in the drum so she can play with me. It sure has helped my rhythm control on the mandolin since attempting to learn the drum. I appreciate watching you real musicians taking the time to show us newbies.

I'm always glad to hear these are helping! I think the fact that I started out on percussion made me really appreciate the importance of groove when I learned other instruments.

Lol. Reminds me of when someone asks how I do something on guitar and I have to stop and think about it in order to show and describe it. It gets to the point where you don't really think about it, you just do it. The reason why I suck as a teacher, so kudos for being able to think about what you play and describe it so quickly. Usually, on guitar, I have to think and look at what I did for a bit to figure out how I did it, because usually I get asked about something that was instantaneous and without thought...spur of the moment things. I'm just getting back into the bodhran after a long "Shtuff Happens" hiatus. Basically starting over. I'm looking at everyone's approach, they're all different, to see what works and doesn't work for me. Started back yesterday, so I have a long way to go.

Sometimes having to figure out how to explain something helps me understand it a lot better too! I've been posting a lot of short videos on TikTok lately and I've spent a lot of time making responses to questions, which is fun, but it makes me realize how much stuff I just... do. Now I have to think about it!

@@mattdeblassmusic I don't think in theoretical terms. I'll just play something and then later figure out what it is in music theory. I don't sit and think, "I'm going to play something in Phrygian Dominant" (for example). Whatever I hear in my head I just go with and figure it out later. Not that doing that is a bad thing, it's just not how I'm wired musically...and if I try to explain something to someone else, usually the theory gets lost on people, so I try to keep it simple. Spur of the moments are the worst because half the time I don't even remember what I did!...unless I really screwed it up, then it sticks with me. Lol
