I was born in the proper time and while I enjoy this music I don't know if I could give up having nearly all human knowledge at my fingertips and being less than a minute from any type of music I want to listen to. My age is irrelevant, as is my taste in music, and I say to those who claim to be "born out of their generation" or who say they "have an old soul" that they are living in a wondrous age and the greatest time to be alive, each and every day we take steps forward into the unknown and discover things we never thought possible. Look out into the world and find what makes you happy and know that in nearly every generation in the past you wouldn't have half the opportunities you have now, be happy for who you are and when you're alive because you're only given one trip, so make it a good one.

I knew it from age 8, when this became a big hit for Bobby Darin in 1960. My mom bought the 45 RPM record, and played it often while she was doing housework. I remember listening to it from jukeboxes in diners and restaurants. It stayed in the tabletop jukeboxes till they became obsolete.

It really bums me out thinking about how long ago things were. (it also feels really weird. like. 1960 shouldn't be 63 years ago. the 80s also don't feel like 40 years ago and the 90s certainly don't feel like 30 fucking years ago. what the hell?) and i'm sure it'll continue to bum me out as i get older. shit, i'll probably live to see the last WW2, Korea, and Vietnam veterans go.) it also really bums me out knowing i'll never be able to experience any of it. i missed out on the twentieth century. perhaps the single greatest century in human history.

Somewhere beyond the sea Somewhere waiting for me My lover stands on golden sands And watches the ships that go sailin' Somewhere beyond the sea She's there watching for me If I could fly like birds on high Then straight to her arms I'd go sailing It's far beyond the stars It's near beyond the moon I know beyond a doubt My heart will lead me there soon We'll meet beyond the shore We'll kiss just as before Happy we'll be beyond the sea And never again I'll go sailing I know beyond a doubt, ah My heart will lead me there soon We'll meet (I know we'll meet) beyond the shore We'll kiss just as before Happy we'll be beyond the sea And never again I'll go sailing No more sailing So long sailing Bye bye sailing

This is one of those feel good songs. Imagine driving along in a baby blue 59 Impala this song playing. Just cruising around nowhere in particular. No hurry not a care in the world. Absolutely, born in 1950, I was ALWAYS a big fan, and during the late 50s and early 60s, with so many great doo wop and bee boop artists and many great crooners, he stood out. He was my favorite. His stage presence and sense of rhythm were top drawer. Mack the Knife was as good as Beyond the Sea. Next to Bobby, maybe Dion (with the Belmonts for a while). One can get lost in nostalgia.
