"Carrot Figures - Painting the Female Form"
Welcome back to another BobBlast!
This BobBlast stemmed from a request - "How do you paint female carrot people?" Thank you for making me think about it!
The quick answer is... When I'm painting the illusion of the human form - I think "Carrot." A dot for the head and then brushing in an abstract figure shape underneath the dot. You saw my demo of this technique on a full sheet of watercolor paper, practicing the shapes over and over with only black acrylic paint and a big brush.
As far as painting the different genders, I break it down to painting basic shapes - and this is so generally stated - men have broader shoulders and narrower hips. Women are the opposite - narrower shoulder and broader hips. So, to paint a more feminine figure, I also add a feminine pose, generally borrowed from Greek statues.
I recall that the drawing room in my college had many of those statues - they influenced me greatly!
In this video, I practice painting female carrots - using colors! I exaggerate the poses and add a dramatic element of suggested capes, hats and other fashionable accessories. I often start with black acrylic paint to get the basic shape and pose, then add the colors after the black base has dried.
These small figure studies are great practice for my larger circus pieces! Take a look in the video!
Circle, triangle, rectangle, square... basic shapes!
Below is a list of featured workshops - but did you know that I also offer private sessions in my studio? Perfect for beginners who want a crash course in watercolor or acrylic or for artists who are designing a exhibit and want to bounce ideas for content and techniques. I devote 100% of my studio time to you! Designed for 1 to 3 people - if you are interested or have questions, email kate@robertburridge.com
Thanks again for watching and telling your friends! All my BobBlasts are archived on my website and my KZread Channel. We post new studio tips weekly that offer real content, substance and useful techniques that work for me. And they're free! We appreciate your interest, questions, comments and support!

Thanks for your comments.
Hi bob! Absolutely Love, love your tutorials! However I would love to know what is the extra large paper you’re using, what thickness and where would I be able to purchase them without spending a fortune. I will be using them for large figure drawings in sketch form, be it charcoal or pastel drawing purposes. Love your thought on this and as usual greatly appreciated.

Hi Novel! Thanks for note. In the video I used 300 lb Kilimanjaro Watercolor Paper from Cheap Joe's Art Stuff catalog. Another paper I use when I draw - BFK Rives. I always buy my paper in bulk - when it is on sale! Best to you!
Great stuff, Bob. So glad I found you. Or should I thank KZread algorithms? 😆🙏
At 3:45 , the female had the perfect leg and I was like no, no,.. and you went right over it.lol
I live in Georgia now so I was wondering if you can do one for Pair people?? Very cool I love it!! Bling bling.

Thanks Mr. Burridge! haha
Bob, please do an event in the motor city!
I see the female figures more as peanuts on legs. Lol
