Bob is one of the greatest rhythm guitar players who's ever taken the stage....chord knowledge, ability to get in the pocket, picking his spots/when to lay out/when to step forward. Like watching a master carpenter build a gazebo

Bobby was my guitar teacher, of course not in person. Although I worshiped at his feet for 100+ shows. It's a never-ending education and I thank God for the many opportunities to boogie and learn from him.
Love seeing Bob get down in his later years. Thanks Trey.
Witnessed this live, one of my best Wanee memories!
This is the best bird song I've heard since Jerry died. Ridiculously good.

This is great! I donno why I am so nervous for Trey when he plays with Bobby but this is some epic stuff for sure! Voices complement each other so well. Trey all smooth and subtle and Bob never losing that greatful dead bluesy tone. love it!
Weir always surprises me with his incredible rhythm guitar playing that is really all his own. They both sound just great and thank you for posting this.
I think Trey would give anything if he could have his sister see him playing with Bobby and Phil, Bill and Mickey during FTW and also see how healthy and happy he has been these last years. I admire and respect him in so many ways, and not just musically.

I have lots of great memories with this song and both of these guys playing on stage. To see 'em jammin' together like this, in this time and space is pretty sweet.
loved trey's enthusiasm playing to bobby's rhythm, while not Jerry, this is nice to see, two of my favorites.
Love them playing a GaGa tune that's so perfect.
Gentlemen, thank you for a lovely job.

A classic, would love to see more of this, and these guys plus Phil on bass would be even more magical. And maybe add Jeff on keys and Billy or Jay on drums to make it a band.

Wow so many great things going on here with these 2 legendary, super talented musicians. Love seeing Bobby always pushing the improvisation boundaries and loves seeing Trey performing so beautifully and effortlessly. Like others mentioned the Birdsong was spacey and put me in such a blissful mode. The whole set was great! Friend of Devil was really enjoyable too. So glad I finally came across this show/video. Thank you for posting! Oh and really great quality too!

Bob is so generous and Trey gives his best effort. Think a few people are missing the thought that Bob is so comfortable in his own skin that it's second nature. Think about what it might be like to step on stage with someone who has given 1000 performances? I don't see too many takers for trying to sing along with Mick Jagger? Bob is so welcoming , it's great for the Treys and John Mayers.
what happens around 18 minutes in - incredible
wow good to be alive
Even in a duo Bob's guitar is thin, tinny, and buried in the mix. It's as if the man does not want to be heard.

MB it's true I'm glad somebody else picked up on it. Billie Holiday once said that if you're doing a song the same exact way every time then you're not being true to your art. From what I've been learning Jerry did not like Studio work so much it is because live performance allows your soul to shine. When the dead tried to cover Merle Haggard Mama Tried it looked as if Jerry was in disbelief that Bob even started the song it took him awhile to get back on track check it out
And for the dislikes, sorry, but you’re just sad and angry. This is good stuff

I love Trey's obvious choice of guitar for someone who could have whatever he wants for an acoustic..... But of COURSE!! good old Martin D-28! I only play old Martin dreadnaughts myself! What's up with that, Bob? Also, Trey's choice of pick up that doesn't choke the sound hole (making it UN-Martin!).

FoD is a simple and pretty G to C song, with a bit of a shuffle implied. Almost anyone can play it. Jerry always shined brightly on it. Perhaps his theme song. No need to get all hung up in personalities.

Yeah it's simple chords but there's more to it when one is filling in the space in a way that enriches the song. Bobby and Trey play guitar on an instinctual level that they can send their songs in different directions night after night. That's a music level that few can achieve.

The other thing about this is that when the dead did this song Jerry would begin the process by noodling it all out then when the others had it they would begin It sure looks like Trey is waiting on Bob it must be awkward for both of them it's still good but not over-the-top or anything

Phish is good but you're kidding right? Who wouldn't wanna see Bobby and Trey on stage at the same time? Ain't no time to hate brother
Gaga????
This whole set practically was Bob Weir doing Jerry songs like overdone calisthenics. I loved the Dead and I love Phish. Everytime the Dead plays Jerry tunes, they're just a cover band. It's heartbreaking what happened to Jerry and even more so that the Dead can't come up with anything new. It's genius that Trey played 'Miss You' and is staring over and over at Bob Weir to see his reaction. That just didn't happen by accident. Bob can't stand it anymore and points at the mic to say 'Carry on' to Trey because it's such a powerful statement that Bob just can't handle. You can't possibly watch this and think Trey doesn't have soul during that song. It's the ONLY song that had soul. Some people just can't understand Phish. To say they don't have soul is just admitting ignorance to something new you just cannot comprehend. Don't forget the past, the Dead were GREAT but It's not the Dead anymore. As Phish says, "My, my, my, my, my, my, my, it's my soul. It's my soul."
@dylanjoseph583
6 жыл бұрын
Jerry was never one to hold on to things. Once he was done using something, he gave it away. These songs are not his, nor are they Bobby's. They're both just the story tellers. Loose Lucy, Days Between, Standing on the Moon, and New Speedway Boogie are a few Jerry songs that Bob really excels on, and there are many more. Let the man have fun. He sounds amazing.
When I was 15 I started listening to the dead back when Brent was brand new. They had the ability to touch you deeply & convey emotion almost without effort. Phish never had that effect for me. In 2015 I thought give this Trey guy another chance. he's technically great & that's all. in farewell he was just the hired help. I'm glad Meyer is playing now. he's a lit closer to what it is all about. Trey? not for me, thanks.
@rxh1013

Chris Rutherford yea I agree...trey is technically great but soulless...vs jerry..nershi is close..ish..ha mayer
@atonvent
6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call Trey soulless, this is just not his strength. I've seen Phish and Trey live many times and have seen a lot of soul from him. Like someone said below, he lacks vocal range. His high pitch clashes with Bobby's. Phish and Trey's solo stuff is designed around that. Jerry and Bobby were like peanut butter and jelly and even though Jerry got most of the hype, its hard to imagine the band being as good without Bobby. There was just something magical with how those two intertwined. If these two weren't "Trey" and "Bobby" and instead were just a couple guys jamming on a couch somewhere thinking about starting a band, they would never succeed in a band together because they don't complement each other.

There is a big part of me that wants to enjoy Trey, but every song I ever hear him participate in is totally void of emotion. This is no accident. My problem with phish for years was how soul less the songs seem...just empty words. Trey has all the talent in the world, but he has no soul...Going through the motions of intricate notes with no heart. This video actually proves it. The crowd is sleeping for something that should kick ass. Its dead silent!

Incorrect, Phish did Funk really well from 97-99. Plenty of feeling and emotion in some of those sets. Trey's biggest issue is his lack of range as a vocalist. Its an acoustic set bro....its supposed to be chill.
