Dr. Gates makes everything so fascinating. He’s got that golden voice, with the likes of Morgan Freeman and James Earl Jones. Such eloquence. I adore his demeanor and delivery. I assume he’s won Emmy’s. If not, he’s deserving of an entire wall of awards. Dr. Gates, you’re the STAR of the show. ✨💫✨

My fifth great gramps trained Napoleon s cavalry. His skills saved his head, but then he lost it at Waterloo, to a cannonball. When I watched the recent film, it's all I could think of.

That finger injury his ancestor got was a million dollar wound. Without it, Bob probably would never have been born.

It's like that episode from Breaking Bad were Saul (Bob's character) makes up a story about finding Ted's ancestors were from Dutch royalty

My mom was doing this genealogy stuff a couple decades ago, and I learned that my ancestors were "land speculators" who started towns in various places around the nation. I am supposedly related (not directly) to President Garfield. My ancestors were part of the Underground Railroad "assistance program" in Southwestern Ohio (Price Hill), a fact that I am quite proud of. And that is just my Mom's side. Hey, Doc... do my tree, man.

What I learned is that no matter what anybody thought in the past was the biggest deal to them. They went out to fight some war or to accomplish some great feat We look back on it now as an unimportant thing. Very distant from ourselves. We must maintain the fact that no matter what is going on today it is equally unimportant in the grand scheme of time. No matter how big the war is today we should never fight it because 300 years from now nobody will care

Question: what happened to the video about Sting's roots? It completely disappeared from the Ancestry channel. Was this because of Sting's request?

I’ve been trying to find definitive evidence that one of my 5th great granduncles from New Brunswick, Canada, fought at Waterloo, as family legend has it. I know he was transferred from Canada to England in November 1814 as the War of 1812 was starting to wrap up. I found someone with his name in the paybook for the 23rd Light Dragoons that started on December 25, 1814 and went through three years. In it, that person was recorded as a Waterloo veteran. If I can find the paybook that preceded the 1814-1817 one and see that the person is not in that one, I would be very confident that he is my distant relative. Unfortunately, that earlier paybook is not online, and I can’t afford to hire someone to go to the archives in London to look it up. The first mention I’ve found of that legend was published in 1900 in a Who’s Who of New Brunswick mini bio of another family member, so it is an old tale. That early date reinforces my thoughts that this is a legitimate story. But, I really need that earlier paybook to verify it.
