David Sanborn, the legendary alto saxophonist, crafted melodies that deeply resonated with many. Since his passing on May 12, 2024, in Tarrytown, New York, from complications of prostate cancer at the age of 78, tributes have been pouring in. Diagnosed with the disease in 2018, Sanborn continued to be celebrated for his mastery of jazz and his ability to create timeless music through collaborations with other legends.
One of his closest friends and collaborators, Bob James, has been profoundly affected by Sanborn's passing. Despite his sorrow, James is well and has publicly honored his dear friend. On Facebook and Instagram, James posted a heartfelt tribute: "The news of the loss of David Sanborn to the music world has deeply saddened me. I was so privileged to share major highlights of my career in partnership with him. His legacy will live on through the recordings. Every note he played came straight from his heart, with a passionate intensity that could make an ordinary tune extraordinary. I loved David’s subtle sophisticated humor, which carried over into his music and always made it inspiring to perform with him. He will be deeply missed." James echoed this sentiment in a comment on the announcement of Sanborn's death on his official Facebook page.
This tribute, along with others from fellow artists, highlights the profound love and respect they had for Sanborn. His remarkable work and steadfast friendships are testaments to his enduring legacy.
Bob James and David Sanborn shared a deep bond, rooted in mutual respect and admiration for each other's talents. Their collaboration began with the critically acclaimed album "Double Vision" in 1986, featuring Sanborn’s expressive saxophone and James’ sophisticated keyboard harmonies. The album, with iconic tracks such as “Maputo” and “Moon Tune,” earned them a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance and solidified their musical rapport. They reunited years later to create “Quartette Humaine,” an album that paid homage to the Dave Brubeck Quartet and showcased their undiminished chemistry.
⭐May David Sanborn's soul continue to rest in peace 🕊
