Bob Hawke, a 'giant of Australian politics' | 7.30

In Bob Hawke - the 23rd prime minister, a true moderniser and Labor giant - Australia found a political leader the likes of which we’d never seen before. 7.30 takes an extended look back at the life and career of "Australia's greatest peacetime leader".

@J P so i spose yu think political leeches on the life blood of australia like little johnny rotten howard , tony the head kicker abbott, and Scott the traitorous morrison are such great examples of australian prime ministers. If that's how yu think, yu need to wake up mate, they are all stinkers. None of them have a vision for australia and couldn't hold a candle up to the becon that was Bob hawke. Australia is lost amidst a quagmire of global policy that is turning australia into a puppet nation thanks to years of these fools being in power. My guess is that scomo is counting his loses as we speak , knowing the silver bodgie's passing has sunk his aspirations of owning the lodge for the next 4 years.

@J P I would've blamed Keeting and Howard to be honest, they both created a bad example for the current Labor and Liberal politicians. It is very much a bipartisan problem, one that stems from 1990s political climates- it will be good when this generation of politician is finally gone- and I hope the future one coming up was paying more attention to both parties attitudes from the 70s and 80s. It is though very unfortunate what happened to Whitlam and is very much a lesson as to why governing with good intentions doesn't always work out. Actually in hindsight I think even the 70s had its problems as well and to be honest I think Hawke was the least of that, I think he did a good job all things considered by his predecessors.

You know I'd laugh when politicians would say 'they want us back in the 50s'... clearly times before us WERE simpler... as each generation progresses it seems we regress. I am a kid of the 80s... we had respect for elders, it was taught... and we also had national pride. Now kids are just smart alecks and have little faith in society or laws, morals? The world has gone bonkers. I would love it being the 80s again but you cant instill that pride and morals on where we have gone as a nation / world. Its fucked.

In 1999 I went on a rafting trip down the Franklin River in Tasmania, an absolutely wonderful and enjoyable experience. I remembered that but for Bob Hawke, such a trip would never have been possible. Before the 1983 election one of his pledges was to stop the Franklin River Dam. When he was elected, he kept his promise to halt the dam, and not forget about it, as other politicians may have done. He managed to stop it so today the Franklin River is still free flowing and still there for people to enjoy. The Franklin River is certainly one of Bob Hawke’s legacies that he leaves to Australia and he was one of the country’s most successful and able Prime Ministers. He will be missed, but greatly remembered. I am English but have visited Australia many times and he was the PM for the first 5 of those visits, so I heard a great deal about him and remember him well.

Sigh. My favourite prime minister during my lifetime (closely followed by Paul Keating). I shook his hand once, but of course so did a lot of people. As seen in some of the clips, those guys knew the importance of making a personal connection. But the reason I'm commenting is this: the quality of the archive footage in the first few minutes of that story is a national disgrace. Our nation's memory is falling into ruin. It's at times like this that you realise how priceless old news footage is, but clearly no-one has spent the money needed to transfer it to more stable media.

1986 Australia act paved the way for the people not being heard. The referendum for the third tier of government came along. They spoke. A year later they were ignored. And the Constitution of Australia took a back seat. He's gone but the damage is not. R.I.P

Big Al and rendering what is left of the constitution of Australia invalid? As Hawke did when he went against the people at the 1988 referendum? Huh? And Australia act or not any senator and higher swears a pledge when they appear in Canberra. And they still pledge to serve the queen. So no good came of it pal. Only bad! Bad! Bad!

He totally wrecked our regional TV with that accursed "BRAIN FART", Regional TV Market Aggregation. Regional stations are losing, or have lost their local identities and are little more than translators for the capital city stations, with little or nothing for the regional viewer.

@@SwadianKnight101 It isn't the programme content, though, with these so-called "reality" shows, TV has gone down the toilet. No, it's the loss of regional stations' local "identity" to the point where they've become little more than "translators"(unstaffed transmitters that rebroadcast a parent station's signal on a different frequency) for the capital city stations.

He misspoke. He meant to say that no Australian child will NEED to live in poverty by x date. Yet, your only dispute with a man who raised high school graduation rates from 33% to 75% and floated the dollar successfully and greatly improved healthcare AND reunited Australia after the tumultuous Fraser AND created one million jobs which would have pushed the unemployment rate from 8% to less than 1% if it wasn’t for the influx of women into the workforce of which his reforms allowed for (obviously not saying that’s bad) AND revolutionised industrial relations is an opposition’s campaign point from an election he won. Unlucky, Jozsef your idiotic liberal sensibilities are showing. Looking back on it now with your misspelling of ‘grate’ I think this is a bait but I’m still gonna post the comment now lmao

As man he was warm and caring towards his country and its people, he brought probably one of the greatest eras to be alive in Australia via the 1980's! He was a great mediator and statesman. But he made a fatal flaw with signing us away to an unassuming and lukewarm CCP in 1990 (which other pollies further encouraged in worse aspects) which would damn us right after his sad passing in 2019 via the CCP's pandemic unleashing in 2020! Surely he should've known better in what they were capable off after witnessing the Tieman Square massacre yet he still signed everything we once had away!!! Damn it man sigh.......
