I first saw him playing in a high school gym in California in 1964, He was singing alone with a guitar and harmonica. That night changed my life forever. One year later he was playing packed auditoriums and transforming music and pop culture. I loved it when he went electric and had a band. On December 17, 1965 I brought him an oil painting I had done of him. I got to the show early and watched him and The Band do a short warm up session before the show. I was the only person in the hall, sitting front row, center seat as they serenaded me. Earlier that day I had run away from an angry Marine Sargent who was trying to shanghai me into the Vietnam War. That's another day I'll never forget. Love him or hate him you have to respect his fearless integrity to his musical muse. His folk fans wanted to keep him in a box. True artist's don't fit in boxes... they break them to get out.

I first saw Bob Dylan at "The Rave" Eagles club in Milwaukee WI in the 90's. It was a small venue maybe a 2 thousand people. We were so close we could nearly smell his aftershave. He closed out the show with Highway 61 Revisited and the whole building shook from the dancing that was going on, what gave me hope for the future was the diverse age of people there, lots of teenagers, young and old!! I have seen him a couple more times since but none have topped that show. My Mom saw Dylan in SF and was sitting behind Joan Baez in a similar setup, it was very cool because I felt like I was there with her. One of my favorites!!

This gig was performed the same evening after partying all night with John Lennon and filming the infamous "taxi" scene at 7am the same morning where he's very messed up and trying not to throw up in the cab. He must have crashed out in his hotel room for a few hours before getting sober enough to stand up and do this performance.

Lennon talked about it in an interview from 1980 saying Dylan was throwing up in the hotel lobby (which they were driving to) hence why he was hoping he wouldn't "get sick" in the taxi scene.

Please note that in his music he doesn't miss a bar, a phrase, a counter point, a name or a word. He knows exactly what he's doing. Then he's having fun performing stoned out of his mind between the songs. That's OK as long as the music is great.

True, but so did Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode) in the Devotional tour, despite having a massive drug problem. I think Bob was on a pretty dark road at this point despite being cool AF

@@_ljcarlton he probably is on some drugs, but I don't think it was only or even mainly the drugs which made him talk the way he did. He seems to have made it pretty clear at the beginning when he was drawling that he doesn't know how to write a drug song: all of this seems to be all highly ironic.

Damn. This is pretty tough to hear. I didn't realise Dylan was so gone by this point. Sounds totally frazzled and smacked out. I'm guessing he started using to take the edge off all the speed he was on just to keep going. On top of alcohol, mary jane, ten thousand cigarettes and god knows what else. Thankfully he didn't become another casualty and is still with us today! God bless you Bob x

Well, he sure did introduce the "hawks" to all the great tradition of american music summoning them all up in Woo dstock, Levon included; made them obtain such self sense as a group that they became " THE Band" and inspired to them 2 of the most seminal records in rock; moreover paid to Mick one year and a half of salary cos he let him down by retreating after this gruelling tour, that nearly killed him creatively and phisically - I think it can be deemed grateful enough?!?

Oh my goodness, I was there and have always remembered that bit about the word Rubbish which was actually a snappy and funny response to a heckler who shouted "Rubbish!". He was, though, clearly out of it and sometimes seemed to have trouble standing up. He also made a bit of an idiot of himself when he tried to play drums! I don't remember him going on for so long so at any particular point so I think various bits of talk have been edited together. I agree with another commentator that the speed has been slowed down (why?)and is prob more accurate when played at 1.25.

A lot of speed and marijuana...but I also think part of it is an act. Imagine being super drunk or strung out and remembering all those lyrics without notes. Right when he starts singing, he doesn't sound as slurry or drunk. Marijuana high, sure; buzzed, likely. Heroin, I don't buy. That's always been a rumor, a rumor without evidence. I also think he was tired. The tour really took a toll on him physically and mentally--he was married, with children at home: Jesse had just been born. People forget how much of a 'family' guy he actually was and (likely) still is.
