Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
In death, you face life with a child and a wife
Who sleep-walks through your dreams into walls
You’re a soldier of mercy, you’re cold and you curse
“He who cannot be trusted must fall”
[Verse 2]
Loneliness, tenderness, high society, notoriety
You fight for the throne and you travel alone
Unknown as you slowly sink
And there’s no time to think
[Verse 3]
In the Federal City you been blown and shown pity
In secret, for pieces of change
The empress attracts you but oppression distracts you
And it makes you feel violent and strange
[Verse 4]
Memory, ecstasy, tyranny, hypocrisy
Betrayed by a kiss on a cool night of bliss
In the valley of the missing link
And you have no time to think
[Verse 5]
Judges will haunt you, the country priestess will want you
Her worst is better than best
I’ve seen all these decoys through a set of deep turquoise eyes
And I feel so depressed
[Verse 6]
China doll, alcohol, duality, mortality
Mercury rules you and destiny fools you
Like the plague, with a dangerous wink
And there’s no time to think
[Verse 7]
Your conscience betrayed you when some tyrant waylaid you
Where the lion lies down with the lamb
I’d have paid off the traitor and killed him much later
But that’s just the way that I am
[Verse 8]
Paradise, sacrifice, mortality, reality
But the magician is quicker and his game
Is much thicker than blood and blacker than ink
And there’s no time to think
[Verse 9]
Anger and jealousy’s all that he sells us
He’s content when you’re under his thumb
Madmen oppose him, but your kindness throws him
To survive it you play deaf and dumb
[Verse 10]
Equality, liberty, humility, simplicity
You glance through the mirror and there’s eyes staring clear
At the back of your head as you drink
And there’s no time to think
[Verse 11]
Warlords of sorrow and queens of tomorrow
Will offer their heads for a prayer
You can’t find no salvation, you have no expectations
Anytime, anyplace, anywhere
[Verse 12]
Mercury, gravity, nobility, humility
You know you can’t keep her and the water gets deeper
That is leading you onto the brink
But there’s no time to think
[Verse 13]
You’ve murdered your vanity, buried your sanity
For pleasure you must now resist
Lovers obey you but they cannot sway you
They’re not even sure you exist
[Verse 14]
Socialism, hypnotism, patriotism, materialism
Fools making laws for the breaking of jaws
And the sound of the keys as they clink
But there’s no time to think
[Verse 15]
The bridge that you travel on goes to the Babylon girl
With the rose in her hair
Starlight in the East and you’re finally released
You’re stranded but with nothing to share
[Verse 16]
Loyalty, unity, epitome, rigidity
You turn around for one real last glimpse of Camille
’Neath the moon shining’ bloody and pink
And there’s no time to think
[Verse 17]
Bullets can harm you and death can disarm you
But no, you will not be deceived
Stripped of all virtue as you crawl through the dirt
You can give but you cannot receive
[Verse 18]
No time to choose when the truth must die
No time to lose or say goodbye
No time to prepare for the victim that’s there
No time to suffer or blink
And no time to think

yes, they can, you just have to know the point of data behind the façade that allows you to write and speak one thing, but have it heard and understood a completely different way "The peacock dreams of Atlantis, missing the obvious, too false to notice this, whilst busy naming this, whilst memory takes the fall" :) that aint nonsense , it makes perfect sense, "they keep it all hid kid"

Is this not arguably Dylan's best album? The sheer genius in his rhyme to tell a story. Amazingly brilliant! A true poet. Nobel Prize and Medal of Freedom's well deserved. He's a national treasure in my view.

I believe that he is singing about a man considering murdering his wife for cheating on him. He’s already been to prison for assaulting her lover and although he has also cheated, he cannot forgive her and he is planning to murder her for, as the man in the song sees it, betraying him. He recognises his hypocrisy but because of his wounded pride he can’t forgive ... it’s a very dark and compelling song.

CAN U BELIVE THIS I HAVE NEVER EVER HEARD THIS SONG. WHY BECAUSE MY FATHER NEVER LIKE THE WAY, BOB DYLAN SING 🤔😕😒😐🙄. I WOULD ASK HIM WHY? HE WOULD ANSWER THAT , TO HIM THE SINGER SEEMS TO BE FROM HIS OF BEING ALONE, WITHOUT HIS MOTHER. BECAUSE FATHER'S MOTHER HAD REMARRIED AFTER HIS FATHER HAD PASS AWAY. SO IT HAPPENED THAT FATHER DIDN'T LIKE HIS STEP FATHER AND HE MOVED OUT AT THE AGE OF SIXTEEN. AND HE STARTED TO ROAM THROUGH THE STATES OF ILLINOIS AND OKLAHOMA ALSO HE LIVED IN TEXAS WHERE HE MET MOTHER. HE NEVER LIKE, BOB DYLAN SONGS. SO SAD BECAUSE HE COULD HAVE USE THEM AS THEREPY. A friend gave me a cassette with this album on it just after I came out of the forces. I was going through serious PTSD and had a nervous breakdown during which time I played the tape over and over again until the tape was swelling with use. I remember hearing Dylan’s words and thinking about my life and what I had been through. It’s been a rough road ever since but when I hear this album I feel a sense of grounding and I can rationalise life’s powerful effects on the soul that belongs to Jesus. He is the only peace I feel. Dylan gave us all perspective that we can draw from and help us to endure. Is your love in vain is another great song and as an entertainer I got to perform it in front of my mum and dad in the 80s. A special memory to hold onto until that day. 🖖

Thank you! 🙏 ⏱ I Love this song it is very deep! It does not get the recognition it deserves! Edited in: There are a few different ways of considering what is being said in these brilliant lyrics. Not just what is being said but the rapid delivery goes well with theme. If you let the first two lines thread through all the stanzas you can see it does well in describing final moments when life flashes before your eyes as they say; hence, no time to think. This song is more than just that though it’s actually about getting your priorities sorted while you still have time and not be scattered and moving in every direction. It can actually be a guide that of all the things and concepts mentioned, you must choose what will really matter in the end. There are of course other ways to consider it but that’s the one I chose to try to convey.

In death, you face life with a child and a wife Who sleep-walks through your dreams into walls. You're a soldier of mercy, you're cold and you curse, "He who cannot be trusted must fall." Loneliness, tenderness, high society, notoriety. You fight for the throne and you travel alone Unknown as you slowly sink And there's no time to think. In the Federal City you been blown and shown pity, In secret, for pieces of change. The empress attracts you but oppression distracts you And it makes you feel violent and strange. Memory, ecstasy, tyranny, hypocrisy Betrayed by a kiss on a cool night of bliss In the valley of the missing link And you have no time to think. Judges will haunt you, the country priestess will want you Her worst is better than best. I've seen all these decoys through a set of deep turquoise eyes And I feel so depressed. China doll, alcohol, duality, mortality. Mercury rules you and destiny fools you Like the plague, with a dangerous wink And there's no time to think. Your conscience betrayed you when some tyrant waylaid you Where the lion lies down with the lamb. I'd have paid off the traitor and killed him much later But that's just the way that I am. Paradise, sacrifice, mortality, reality. But the magician is quicker and his game Is much thicker than blood and blacker than ink And there's no time to think. Anger and jealousy's all that he sells us, He's content when you're under his thumb. Madmen oppose him, but your kindness throws him To survive it you play deaf and dumb. Equality, liberty, humility, simplicity. You glance through the mirror and there's eyes staring clear At the back of your head as you drink And there's no time to think. Warlords of sorrow and queens of tomorrow Will offer their heads for a prayer. You can't find no salvation, you have no expectations Anytime, anyplace, anywhere. Mercury, gravity, nobility, humility. You know you can't keep her and the water gets deeper That is leading you onto the brink But there's no time to think. You've murdered your vanity, buried your sanity For pleasure you must now resist. Lovers obey you but they cannot sway you They're not even sure you exist. Socialism, hypnotism, patriotism, materialism. Fools making laws for the breaking of jaws And the sound of the keys as they clink But there's no time to think. The bridge that you travel on goes to the Babylon girl With the rose in her hair. Starlight in the East and you're finally released You're stranded but with nothing to share. Loyalty, unity, epitome, rigidity. You turn around for one real last glimpse of Camille 'Neath the moon shinin' bloody and pink And there's no time to think. Bullets can harm you and death can disarm you But no, you will not be deceived. Stripped of all virtue as you crawl through the dirt, You can give but you cannot receive. No time to choose when the truth must die, No time to lose or say goodbye, No time to prepare for the victim that's there, No time to suffer or blink And no time to think.

I believe it’s speaking about a man who is considering murdering his wife because she has cheated on him. But he’s flexing back and forth: much later after the verse you quoted, he says: “Fools making laws for the breaking of jaws/And the sound of the keys as they clink/But there’s no time to think.” I take that as he’s just been released from prison after violently assaulting her paramour. Although he’s also cheated his pride has been wounded and he can’t forgive and he can’t escape his hypocrisy and he knows it. After that bit about the mirror there’s a bit later on: “You know you can’t keep her and the water gets deeper/That is leading you onto the brink/But there’s no time to think.” Heck, I could go on. But it’s there in the lyrics. Here is a man on the verge of murdering his wife. The constant charge that “There’s no time to think” indicates that he’s being driven by a strong impulse which he is either unable to, or not willing to, fight. And the irony is that indeed, now is the time to think.

“We are eachothers” Tomorrow is finally new, Yesterday is a coward swimming in pools of shame. Pride lay before you, so tell it “no thank you” It’ll soon be bound to then leave. The map once in skies lay in twinkling eyes, Pray your lovers demise never see the night moon, the light of swoon, the might of doom. Say what was in your mind, may it only be kind, may it leave peace and and find you unlost. Tell me how much did it cost, is it you in there under that rust? Have no, gave no, give no, no hive, no reason, treason, no home. Roll lonesome on down the road. ,dan’
