Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed
Whatever colors you have in your mind
I’ll show them to you and you’ll see them shine
[Verse 2]
Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay
Stay with your man awhile
Until the break of day, let me see ya' make him smile
His clothes are dirty but his, his hands are clean
And you’re the best thing that he’s ever seen
[Verse 3]
Stay, lady, stay
Stay with your man awhile
Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he’s standing in front of you
[Verse 4]
Lay, lady, lay
Lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay
Stay while the night is still ahead
I long to see you in the morning light
I long to reach for you in the night
Stay, lady, stay
Stay while the night is still ahead

My husband passed away at age 30, second tour in Iraq. I’ve been single for 8 years. I recently met a really respectful and sweet man. We had our first real date last night but it wasn’t the first time we have spent time together talking. We spent time at his house talking last night and I felt really comfortable around him, which is huge bc I’ve been alone for so long. It was late and he asked me if I wanted to stay over, just to sleep bc it’s a long drive home. We held each other all night, nothing more, but it was amazing and brought me to this song. I think this could be real and that scares the hell out of me. Perfect bc it was innocent. I just feel this is right and my husband would’ve wanted me to be happy. I hope everyone listening has found happiness bc we all deserve it.

You can't live in the past, nor can you change it. But that doesn't mean you have to forget it, either. Your experiences make you who you are. Just ride the rapids and do what makes you happy. Nothing wrong with that. I'm sure your late husband would tell you the same thing.

Reba, I'm so sorry for your loss! Your husband has paid such a high price on the altar of freedom. May we never forget his loving generous spirit ! PS, If I can speak for your late husband, As much as he 💕 loved you, he would want you to be happy! As my late grandfather would tell us in times of pain and sorrow, We have to keep breathing, keep moving, live in a way that would make them proud! So live life to the fullest !

Listening in 2024. I’m 58 years old and soon to be 59. I remember my dad listening to this when I was very young and I hated it. But now I love it. it’s been in my playlist for nine months now. It really represents what somebody wants at their core.

This song played a big role in helping me make one of the most important decisions in my life. I had been single for nearly 20 years after a very nasty divorce. I had 3 children to raise and they too had been traumatized by their father leaving, so I dedicated myself to being a full-time mom. After they were all grown, I decided it was time for me. I jumped into the dating pool and flailed around a couple of times, but then, quite unexpectedly, I met a kind, caring, heartbroken widower. All the boxes checked for us and we hit it off immediately. Guess who got scared after a couple of weeks? Yep. Me! So, I told him I needed to step back a bit and figure out if this was the direction I wanted to go or not. After a painful couple of weeks filled with uncertainty, this song, Lay Lady Lay, came on the radio. I was literally on my kitchen floor doing some heavy duty scrubbing when these lyrics, I'd heard many times before, suddenly seemed like I was hearing them for the first time and that they were for ME --- "Why wait any longer for the world to begin You can have your cake and eat it too Why wait any longer for the one you love When he's standing in front of you." That was it! I knew from that very second that I was almost throwing away the love of my life. Thankfully, he had been patiently waiting for me to figure out what I wanted. He was there with open arms ---- and has been for the last 7 years. We were both married months before our 60th birthdays and I could not be happier. This song was our first dance at our wedding. Thanks Mr. Dylan. You saved me.

I remember hearing this song on the radio in 1969 in my Dad's new Galaxie 500. We were going to see my Grandma in Seattle. it was a beautiful spring day (a Saturday I believe) and we were all dressed up for a super lunch! I had a brand new Hotwheels car too. I miss those days so much and this song brings it all rushing back.

I was in Viet Nam when this song came out. Dylan was always a favorite of mine with his song writing, poetic expression and talent. People would always say his voice sucked but I never agreed. He had a style that lived on through the ages as we all see now. He paved the way for so many other bands through the years. My brothers and myself have always talked and felt we were so lucky to have been part of this generation the likes of which will probably never be seen again.

I love this song. Not only is it a haunting song that echos from my childhood- every player on it is a legend. Charlie Daniels on guitar! Dylan himself. Pete Drake on pedal steel- who invented the talk box that Peter Frampton made famous. Even Kenny Buttrey on drums is a story- none other than Kris Kristofferson holds the bongos and cowbell in his hand for Kenny to play! Even the human percussion stand is a legend on this track. It truly captures another time and place, my favorite Dylan song.

I was born in late 1968 and my parents met in College and graduated in 65', (In the midwest), so they were more folk than hippie generation. My dad liked and had Dylan albums, and also stranger singer song writers like Loudon Wainwright, early Jerry Jeff Walker etc. As a rocknroll loving kid in the 70s I wished they were more into the harder music so I'd have a better selection of their albums to choose from, but now at 53, and after really delving into rocks history on youtube since 2008, I've realized how important (like them or not) every great artist was from Elvis Presley to Elvis Costello in that mind-blowingly great 25 year musical era from 1955 to 1980, and Bob Dylans role in music and lyrics you can't say enough about. Being able to write a song like Hard Rain at 21 in 1962, when you grew up in a small town in Minnesota is really unbelievable, and then backing that up with all the other great songs he wrote throughout the 1960s, definitely makes him one of the most important artists of all time!

We graduated from high school (in L.A. California) in 1969. My friend George (gone for over 10 years now) went to Malibu for an early morning breakfast before hitting the beach. I remember being in the cafe and thinking this is the last time we'll be in this part of our life, before college (or career), and without the income and subsequent debts that young people experience. I knew this was special, but didn't know why at the time. Bless you George, for the times we had through high school, and the feelings of being on this world at this time and at this maturity level. The jukebox song we played put it all into perspective, so thank you Bob Dylan for allowing me to reminisce about a specific time in my life, before major love relationships, income and debt levels and overall moving into the next phase of our existence into this world. Happy new (future) years to all the human race if looks into one human's comments. What a world.

Rest Easy Charlie Daniels, he played guitar on this album and a few others by Dylan, but he was a country music legend and always will be.

I have a friend who is just absolutly gorgeous in my opinion. Blond hair, green eyes and a slim body. I feel the same way when I look at her. I just want to enjoy her beauty. I feel love for her like no other girl I've loved before.

I tried doing that but she's looking to either get married or just have children. I'm not looking for either one of those. Also she's 29 and I'm 57. She was honest with me and told me I'm too old for her. It bothered me , but she was right and at least she was honest with me. But I love her as a friend and that's good enough for me and I'm still looking for a girl closer to my age who wants the same things as I do.

First heard this at about 1 am on a cold misty night in late 1992 as I drove home from my girlfriend's house. I remember seeing the cold street light through the mist and smelling her perfume on my collar and thinking of her warm goodnight kiss and embrace.

A true classic from Bob Dylan I heard this classic on my little portable transistor radio in the summer of 1969 (fifty yrs ago) I can,t believe it was that long ago. Bob Dylan is the poet of the 1960s.
