Lyrics:
You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
Indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You might be a rock 'n' roll addict prancing on the stage
You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage
You may be a business man or some high-degree thief
They may call you doctor or they may call you chief
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes you are
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a state trooper, you might be a young Turk
You may be the head of some big TV network
You may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame
You may be living in another country under another name
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes you are
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a construction worker working on a home
You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome
You might own guns and you might even own tanks
You might be somebody's landlord, you might even own banks
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride
You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side
You may be workin' in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair
You may be somebody's mistress, may be somebody's heir
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk
Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk
You might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread
You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
Indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may call me Terry, you may call me Timmy
You may call me Bobby, you may call me Zimmy
You may call me R.J., you may call me Ray
You may call me anything but no matter what you say
Still, you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody

I am 65yrs. old and bought Brave by Nicole Nordeman when it first came out. My niece turned me on to it. I love this song. I love Bob Dylan and have been listening to his music since I was a teenager. The fact that he wrote this simply BLOWS me mind. As for me and my house, we have and always will serve the Lord. What a mighty God we serve! Thank you Jesus. My mom passed away this morning. She was 93yrs. It's because of her that I became a Christian! She is Home. I can't wait to see her again one day!! GREAT SONG.

@@marianm7468 I've heard similar things and I've had my own suspicions about Bobby Zimmerman as well. One of my favorite sayings, " Even a broken clock is correct twice each day. " may be applicable here. Though he may be aligned with the fallen one, the overall wisdom in his poetry is present. " It may be the devil or it may be the LORD .... ya gotta serve somebody. " If his choice is indeed the adversary , his wisdom ends with the poetry, in my opinion. My service is to our Heavenly Father , the All Mighty Creator. Have a good evening and a Blessed tomorrow, Marian . Thanks for your insightful comment.

Purple Sage Blessings that’s awesome to hear. At that time my experience with local churches & Christian book shops in terms of Bob Dylan’s 3 gospel/Christian albums was disappointing. They didn’t & wouldn’t stock these albums & fellow believers were critical of & judgemental about his testimony & his confession of faith. Additionally, many of his fans were enraged at the same time. Interesting to note that Jesus had the both the establishment & the worldly against Him also. I’d say this is when we know that we’re dealing with a true & genuine work of God when these things come against it!

I recall watching Saturday Night Live and Dylan singing this song…it blew my mind; I remember people didn’t like that he became a born again Christian…..but that’s their problem……I serve the LORD, praise Jesus !!! ✝️
Was 16 when this came out and my older sister gave it to me on vinyl for that birthday . That combination of Knopfler and the organ with Dylan’s lyrics captivated me and was a catalyst in my journey which to this day , 32 years of marriage and four children later embraces serving Him. A classic example of the songwriting prowess of Bob Dylan. He is "The Poet", His given nickname, but for me its his lyrics that cut through the noise like a razor sharp double edged sword. His understanding of songwriting goes way beyond the higher levels of the craft. He understands the human condition so well, his words are like missiles aimed right at the heart of it. Definitely a must listen for anyone interested in the craft of songwriting. Cheers...!

I’m doing a daily Bible reading plan and happened to come across Joshua 24:15 - “And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” I saw that and immediately thought of this song. “You gotta serve somebody.”
Jesus, I LOVE how he sings this one! Believe it or not, I haven't heard it before. I have a lot of catching up to do.

This is the best vocals Dylan has ever done.
One of my favorite sayings all my life was you can’t be in good with God and the Devil you gotta choose! A young friend of mine at work said to me “ Bob Dylan wrote a song about that, so that’s how I discovered this beautiful song. I have the record and I listen to it in my car. I’ve always thought that music is the best way that God has to communicate with us.
Loved this song since 1979 when it was first released!

This floored me when he played it in Chicago last week. LONG LIVE BOB DYLAN!!!!!!!!!!
_Maybe livin' in another country, under another name_ For me that line, its delicious rhythm cascading up and then down, along with its subject matter, along with its notes, is by far the greatest pleasure in the song. Golden.
Best background vocals ever .... arranged by Bobby, of course. Genius.

Listen to Precious Angel which follows this on the album. I think those are the best background vocals on any of his songs.

The other two 'Christian' albums can't hold a candle to this. Great songs, great feel, great production (unlike many Dylan albums) and a great band. One of his very best.

Yes it's a very special song I got bad news today my kidneys have stopped and the Dr said I would have to go on dialysis or ride it out I went with my mother in law for several years for her treatments and they were hard on her so either way I'm going to die soon. My son told me to look up this song and listen to it because I don't have any ideal how to think about passing

A SONG THAT NEEDS TO BE HEARD AND HEARD AGAIN! FOR “WE”…ARE CONSISTENTLY, “TRENDING” TOWARDS “FORGETTING ABOUT THE FACT,” THAT WE ARE NOT JUST A PHYSICAL BEING, BUT VERY MUCH A SPIRITUAL BEING, AS WELL, WHO, ACTUALLY WILL BE ANSWERING TO THE CREATOR OF US ALL, Whether We want to believe in HIM, or not…we all WILL BE ANSWERING TO HIM,…One way or the other!!! AND…YES! Some of us ANSWER TO THE DEVIL’S CALL. A TRAGIC, ETERNAL, CHOICE.
One may serve God, or serve yourself but serving ourselves makes devils of us all.
