Bob Costas: Rejecting $20M/year and Today Show offers

Ойын-сауық

World-class broadcaster Bob Costas opens up about his early successes, including landing the role as the face of NBC Sports by his mid 30s. Costas defines the marks of excellence for well-rounded, textured journalism and explains how he learned to work smarter (not harder) as a generalist. Later, he shares specific reasons for declining high-profile, lucrative opportunities, including a one-two punch with David Letterman, 60 Minutes, NBC’s Today Show and a $20 million per year offer to host a syndicated morning radio show packaged with a MSNBC presence (replacing Don Imus).

Costas always came across as a professional and the smartest man in the room. He could paint a clear picture without using too many words to do it. I love that he turned down massive money because he knew he wouldn’t be enjoying life if he took it. What a career!

Probably the most arrogant lie he ever told. He didn't do it because he didn't get what he wanted. You only climb ladders so fast. He was lucky he had an eloquent voice and got in with the right people.

Bob seems reeeaaallyyy uncomfortable talking about all the deals and big money that has been thrown his way... he walked away from quite a bit a cash because his heart wasn’t in something. Gotta respect that.

I still remember him calling MJ's last game and with his last shot in the 98 finals and he said during the end of the game and the instant replay "Here comes Chicago. 17 seconds. 17 seconds, from Game 7, or from championship #6. Jordan, open, CHICAGO WITH THE LEAD! "That may have been, who knows what will unfold over the next several months, but that may have been the last shot Michael Jordan will ever take in the NBA." Very historic moment. Every time I think of that game and the end his commentary I can hear him saying those words.

Perhaps Bob Costas' best talent was his ability to be a good and interesting man in public. He simply laid it all out there, everything he was seeing and hearing, everything he knew and felt, everything he was puzzled and curious about. He brought everyone else along with him to every event very effectively. As a viewer, you always felt like you were in good hands with his hosting and presentation, that you would get as full an experience of what was happening at the event and interview as you could. Occasionally, he could be a bit indulgent and preachy, but even then, it usually came from firm ideals and principles and a desire for fairness, balance and even-handedness. He's great by being so consistently good.

I think Bob’s finest moment was the Jerry Sandusky interview. Sandusky’s lawyer sprung the interview opportunity at a moment’s notice, giving Costas no time for preparation. Despite that, Bob asked the exact questions that needed to be asked (and that Sandusky wasn’t expecting) and JS’s bizarre answers/responses revealed his guilt.
