Bob Costas on how steroids loom over the Mark McGwire-Sammy Sosa home run race of 1998 | SC with SVP

Спорт

Bob Costas chats with Scott Van Pelt to discuss the intense home run battle between Cubs RF Sammy Sosa and Cardinals 1B Mark McGwire in 1998. Costas contends that even if he wasn't using steroids, McGwire would still be a home run champ due to his raw, natural power.

For Bob Costas, he goes from covering the ‘98 playoffs with Michael and the last dance then he walks into the greatest summer of the history of the MLB. That had to be an incredible sports year for him witnessing all of this up close.

aj little they didn’t steal nothing. Have you heard the reason (or rumors) as to why Barry allegedly took steroids? Barry thought Sosa and McGwire were inferior players compared to him and when he saw that nobody paid attention when he became the first man ever to join the 400-400 club during the same 98 season he came back in 99 looking a bit different. And of course you know what happened after that from 2000 to 2004. If anything Barry took both of them right out of the record books and placed himself and all allegedly out of jealousy.

In an era where steroids were not against the rules, where nearly every player including pitchers were linked in some way to them, where MLB - including sportscasters like Costas - knowingly profited off of its use, I think the sanctimony is the WORST thing. which is one of the reasons the whole steroids thing is so bad in the long term. pretty much all of big name steroid guys had HOF level skill already they didn't need to do steroids to be great. Now my opinion all these steroid guys should probably just go in the Hall because that era is important and the Hall is supposed to show the history of the game good and bad but also give increased credit to those from that period who had HOF careers and where total clean not acknowledging that success in that way is a disservice.

He threw away a Hall of Fame career clout chasing two cats who weren't even in his zip code as far as talent is concerned and he's more of a tragedy because it was pretty much all self-inflicted.

Everyone knew what was going on and nobody cared. Baseball was hurting from the 94 strike and this is what brought baseball back. It wasn’t until Bonds broke the record that steroids became a problem. If Bonds didn’t break the record it probably never would of become an issue! Chicks dig the long ball but Bonds was a hated man by the press and it all went down hill from there

Wow ridiculous reasoning. These men were lying cheaters and these guys excuse it because it made them feel good. I'm sure all of the millionaires, who defraud the tax system, which could include these gents, feel good. Should we feel good for them. These guys need to have any accolades stripped from them for being liars and cheaters.

I am not sure McGwire ever had a clean MLB at bat. Steroids were around in the mid 80s. Just like ARod, Palmeiro, and Canseco...never clean. Or Bonds once he started needing bigger hats. Fans knew this stuff back in the late 80s. But it didn't get ludicrous until the mid 90s when suddenly Brady Anderson hits 52 HR, 10 bandbox stadiums were built, and all perspective of balance in the game was gone. Chicks dig the longball. MLB was living in a fools' paradise in 1998.

I don’t care they took steroids I don’t think I cared then... it’s all relative. The majority of MLB was taking steroids anyway. Also, to hit a baseball is the hardest thing to do in baseball. It’s still awesome they hit all those home runs. I couldn’t get a single bunt in MLB. It was exciting time!!! That’s how I will remember it.

So they were the only one taking steroids and you just gonna pick on them because they were more talented at the moment it was available and used by many other players I would say 70 percent used and still do but there’s no way you can take the talent and the joy and we fans of the game experience because of them that’s selfish and and shameful. Long life Sammy 30-30 x2 and and only 3 x 60 HR’s player ever!
