A few of the people, including the first guy whose accent you asked about, are New Yorkers. He has one of like two dozen accents that exist in the city alone. Amazingly, people in New York City can sound astoundingly different, depending on what their cultural background is; the city is like four centuries old, and has had hundreds upon hundreds of different ethnic groups migrate there in that time. A few of the other boat captains or mechanics have southern accents, and obviously moved later in life to NYC.

At 10:19 the man in the video said "He thanked me," meaning the welder who he worked with thanked him for getting his son off the island. It was just hard to understand because he was crying.

It was hard to understand because she was talking over the part where he jumped on the boat and missed it.

9/11 showed the world just how evil people can be and just how outstanding heroic others can be. We saw both sides of the human spectrum that day.

The Hudson river is wide and has alot of currents. You can't just swim to Staten Island or NJ.

The ferry driver choking up as he talked about the father, what he said was "He thanked me."

It took 9 days to evacuate nearly 400,000 Allied soldiers across the English Channel in an active war zone in 1940. The world was astounded by such a feat at the time. Then the Boat Evacuation of 9/11, that was more than impressive, it was unfathomably astonishing. That’s nearly 1,000 people off Manhattan Island for every minute.

It's so good that you watched this! We Americans really appreciate it, that you learned some more about that horrible attack, and what happened that was good! Thanks so much! P.S. - just so you know ... swimming a mile is definitely *not* easy! I had to do it for a Red Cross certification, & I was a healthy teenager ... it took me a while, pausing occasionally to 'tread water' & rest a minute! And I needed a nice rest for a bit, afterwards! Swimming is way harder than walking. A *lot* of those folks, who were middle-aged and out of shape ... they probably would have drowned, trying to swim over to the opposite shore!

Very few people would survive an attempt to swim across the Hudson. It's at least a mile from Manhattan to New Jersey

The day it happened I was in fourth grade, we were about to finish our math lessons and start on a “Hooked on phonics” thing we did to encourage kids to read when the principal came running down the halls like Paul Revere telling the teachers to turn on the news. My teacher, not quite getting it (she should have retired long before this and it showed) said “ok I’ll watch the news tonight” then she asked why he was crying and he said “no you need to turn it on NOW! CNN! Ask [fifth grade teacher next door] to help you if you need it. I got to go tell the other teachers!” The teacher next door overheard and came over to set up the tv without wing asked and we saw the news report. None of us kids new what was going on and the teacher couldn’t read the “too small” print on the screen to tell us so the whole school was freaking out and none of us knew why until we could ask our parents after school.

Off topic - but thanks for the Hooked on Phonics trip down memory lane. I'm a bit older than you and I was in grade school in the 1970s, but we had Hooked on Phonics; along with Map Skills and something called SRA - which I can't remember what it stands for.

is amazing how many vessels came together that day. Coast Guard cutters, ferry vessels, sightseeing boats, party boats, NYPD patrol boats, tugboats, tender boats, fishing boats, yachts, catamarins, etc. you should check out stuff about another group of heroes: the passengers and crew members of United Airlines Flight 93 who fought back against their hijackers and sacrificed their lives to keep the fourth plane from hitting their intended target.

Operation Yellow Ribbon on 9/11. Within minutes of 2nd plane hitting 2nd Twin Tower in New York City, all U.S. airspace as shut down, no takeoffs or landings were allowed except for military aircraft. All planes already in flight (about 224) were ordered to land immediately at closest airport. All international flights were banned from entering U.S. airspace & were required to either turn back or were diverted to Canada, Mexico, or Greenland. Small town of Gander, Newfoundland, Canada, ended up accepting 38 planes with 6,700 people on board plus crew members & nearby Halifax, Nova Scotia, took 47 planes with over 8,000 passengers & crew. Planes had to be parked on runways. Gander had a population of about 10,000 people at the time so number of passengers just about equaled their population. Only 500 hotel rooms existed in the town (unknown how many were already full). People in this small town opened their homes to passengers, worked around the clock to feed them, provide beds, etc. There are several videos about it.

Did you know that All The planes in the air space landing took only 30 to 40 minutes? I think that is incredible and scary

The crazy thing I think about a lot is my best friend and her family were visiting the towers like 2-4 days before. Where they went if they had pushed back their visit like they had originally planned would of been one of the locations people were trapped. We were both 6 when it happened, and I lived near DC at the time my mom was working in the hospital that was the closest to the Pentagon when it was hit.

My heart breaks to this day I cry for all the lost. I have a hard time watching anything 9/11. 😢

What is scary is the organization that did this, is still around. Hate is a disease that is spread by radicles. Pray that they don't get strong enough to try again, because right now they feel invincible and triumphant.

I lesser known mvp of this event were the fuel yards that refilled the ships and boats all day entirely free of charge. Even corporations can give up a portion of greed in times of need.

My aunt was living uptown in Harlem when this happened and she watched as people walked up from Midtown and then across the bridges to the other burroughs because they'd shut off all the trains and busses.

I never seen that video Ruky. Here in USA we do not know what other countries were feeling or seeing all I can tell you it shocked everyone something so horrible could happen here. It has been years of hell for the people of NYC. I hope you get a chance to see more videos and try to put yourself in there situation I cannot even grasp how scared and worried they were for there lives. Thank you Ruky for showing this video and I never knew a half a million people were rescued by water. Totally agree!

Maybe it would be possible to swim to Brooklyn, but definitely not to New Jersey. The Hudson is way too wide of a river.

That River is barely maybe 50 degrees F, if you jump, you had best be in the best shape of your life, if not, you'll drown from either exhaustion or the temperature. It doesn't look far, but it takes 15 to 20 minutes by a boat at a pace faster than anyone can swim

I was trying to guess her nationality. Her accent doesn't sound like the Filipinos that I hear. Maybe she has a different dialect than the ones in my island.
