Boating and Camping in the San Juan Islands, Washington - Part 1
We travelled to Anacortes and launched from Washington Park for a week of boating, exploring, fishing and camping in the San Juan Islands, Washington. Getting there is a bit of a chore for us, requiring going through Seattle, which always seems like a nightmare, but a week in the islands was worth it.
We started our trip with a night on James Island, then moved on to Sucia Island in part 1 of this video. We also did some fishing targeting ling cod, but pulled up a few sharks as well. We hiked both James and Sucia. Despite some rain it was a nice time in a beautiful place.
We'll be back in part two as we move on to Jones Island to round out our trip exploring the San Juans.

Yes, those sunny days were really glorious, especially being able to see the north Cascades.
I've got a little boat and I've been looking for info on small boat access and camping in the area so these videos are very helpful! Thanks so much

We're glad you found the videos helpful, we definitely looked around a lot for info before the trip as well! Given good (enough) weather I feel like the San Juan Islands are totally accessible for a smaller boat. We did feel like we were in a dinghy compared to some of the boats out there though!

Really glad to see this video series! I’m glad to see this topic in the comments because I kept wanting more info on the boat :) How big/make/model/etc
We bought our 28' boat so we could cruise the San Juan's but still working on rebuilding the outdrives. Can't wait to get out there but it will probably be next spring. Sucia will probably be our first stop. Thanks for the video.

general question, we're new to the area and looking to enjoy these type of adventures. wondering what is the most common type of boat that people use to island hop.

From what I have seen, a vessel much larger than ours (16 ft). I'd say that would be about the minimum if weather is good.
Dog fishes are good eating if you know how to prepare.

We used to boil the heads of the larger ones to cut the jaws out. The smell was awful. Couldn't imagine eating them. But then again I don't eat tripe, chitlings or anything from a cows mouth. However, to each their own. :)
Is your boat an 18 or 16 ? wondering how the 60 pushes it ? I have an 18 hewes with a 150 ! yikes from Victoria B.C.

We have a 16' sportsman. The 60 works for us, pushes it up to about 23 mph, fast enough for us. The 16 has a max of a 90 hp, but we don't need that.
Thinking of doing this tip this spring. but I only have a 17' Deep V. What are the specs of your boat??

It's a 16' Hewes Craft. So a 17' would work. Just pay attention to the marine forecast. We had a couple days with small craft warnings and I'd be off the water if those occur.
