BOAT LIFE REALITIES: restocking & unblocking in the Torres Strait | Over The Top S2CH.20

    On a boat, it is either a bucket or a head. If it is a head, it must be serviced regularly AND carry a spare joker valves (several) with the hopes that you never need to use the extras. However, when you get a stoppage, they are worth gold.

  • @rogerdilley4359
    @rogerdilley4359 Жыл бұрын

    You should carry a repair kit for that toilet, most chandlers stock them. The rubber valves get hard and need replacing occasionally. Thanks for your vids and happy sailing to u both. Rog

    Little known fact about boat dunnies: it’s PEE, not poo that blocks them. Pee + seawater = calcium carbonate, which coats the hoses and causes the blockage. So, to reduce that as much as possible, pump for ages (at least 20 times) EVERY time you use it. AND (spoiler alert) you will still need to remove the outlet hose at some stage and whack it with a blunt object all over to break off the calcium build up from the inner surface. Once you do that and double or triple your flushing, you should never have to pull it to bits ever again. Especially if you soak it in vinegar every few months, as per @Leith’s excellent comment.

    I'm heading up there in a couple months. Tip for you guys. Rather than cook in the fire, try using the shovel to pull some coals out and place them a meter or more away from the fire. You have more control over the cooking heat and its way more comfortable than reaching in close to a blazing . No exaggeration, its a game changer

    Vinegar is great at keeping the dunny clear but it really takes a long time to divorce the calsium. (Ive got the same jabsco btw). Weekly i throw some dbl strength Vinegar (couple of cups) in and leave it in the hose a few hrs. Once every month or 2 ill close the through hull fully and fill the bowl with double strength Vinegar, give it half a pump to get a little pressure so you can just crack the through hull the tinyest bit then pump the loo till its empty. Then clost the through hull. The idea is to get the strongest nix in the pipe without seawater getting back in the through hull between pumps. Leave it as long as possible (24hrs sorta thing). Ive been doing this for 2 years now and havnt had a blockage (used to be every couple of months grrr). My poo hose is a corrogated one so you can see where it expands when it blocks by the hose swell but i also squish the hose a little by hand every 6 months, you can feel the calsium crack off sometimes. Also a bit of 3mm fence wire is handy. Sand the end smooth then fold the last 20mm over to make a blunt end so you dont puncture the hose. You can jump overboard and clear the through hull this way (best done with some current flow !!!). Vinegars great and will disolve a lot of stuff but it takes a lot of time. Oh and keep hot chips on standby lol

    Jabsco?! Yeuch! Get a Lavac if you must have a sea toilet. We ditched the Lavac and now have a composting one. No thru hulls, no valves, no pump. And no smell. Old seawater stinks ‐ never mind your input! Keep up the good work! Stuck on the hard just now, you keep us in touch with reality, thank you. :-) X

    Hay boofs, it's a CHOKER valve as it chokes it off. You should also put some muriatic acid (diluted battery acid) down it is to break up the crust urine creates when mixed with salt water but remember to put a solid mix down to lubricate after. Salad mix is just that vinegar, oil and lemon juice. Do this monthly to keep pips and parts working. 20 pumps out to clear pipes to be sure. Miss you guys we're in Townsville about to move up to Cairns. Keep up the great adventures.
