Yea it was probably 60/40 excitement and nerves at driving in France for the first time - at Dieppe you are thrown straight in at the deep end, fast lanes, roundabouts but maybe the best way to get into it. Well worth it, was amazing.

If you live on the South Coast, the Newhaven-Dieppe route to the Alps is about 12 hours but includes a 4-5hr break from driving so you can do it easily in one go with about 7 hours on the road in France. If you go via Dover, overall its quicker but you are sitting in your car for the full 10 hours, with a bit of traffic, some breaks and driving time in the UK you are then getting into an epic all nighter or a halfway overnight somewhere. The only real downside is the departure times are set so you can't just rock up ahead of time and get an early crossing.

Dieppe is a lovely town to explore, much nicer than Calais.

Nice informative video. Top tip for the future. Don't mount the camera pointing up. I found it hard not to stare at the sky.

Thanks Terry glad you found it useful, apart from the sky bit. Need to get a go pro and an external mount - it’s on the list.

Newhaven ferries are vast compared to the little ones in the 60's and early 70's, the Falaise was a tiny ferry and rolled horrendously. A young Spanish lorry driver with a cargo of Seville oranges actually died of seasickness [must have been an underlying condition , poor lad] during a severe gale ..ferry was on her beam ends and the QM told the tale on a ferry forum.

Wow that must have been a terrible crossing. Glad to see that they have upgraded the ferries, a great way to travel across the channel in our experience.

Hi Shawon, thanks for the comment. Booked the ticket about 9 months in advance of the trip. Ideally a year before is good simply based on that’s when they are cheaper. But shopping around can also help if you want to travel on a shorter timescale. Hope this helps. Thanks - Caravannery
