Board To Death Ep. 29 - Mark Arm & Steve Turner (Mudhoney) | EarthQuaker Devices
To put it simply, these Mudhoney guys have played together for a very long time. Their demeanor with each other is as natural as it gets. Lucky for us, Mark and Steve decided to sit down and divulge pedal set-ups for this episode of Board To Death! Classic circuits that were around when they started their first bands are still in the mix, but modern updates promoting reliability definitely don’t hurt. Bit Commander pops up early in Mark’s chain, followed by a mystery box that is used quite often along with the Park Fuzz Sound. You are going have to watch the whole thing to find out what else they use because two dudes’ worth of pedals is a lot, and there is no way anything typed here will illustrate how funny these guys are.

Mark Arm casually mentions that the SuperFuzz became hard to find, as if he has no idea that Mudhoney popularized them.
most underrated guys. i love them. i fully understand why they were cobains heroes.
Where does the pedal chain start? Stevie: "Amp!" Marky: "Guitar!" Stevie: "Amp!" Marky: "Guitar!"

I've waited many years for a mark arm arm story. Thank you.
I laughed when Mark mentioned (and mimicked) the sound his first distortion pedals made, I got out an old danelectro distortion I had when I started, had been in the loft nearing 15 years and that’s the exact sound 🤣
They are one my first favorite bands that got me into Fuzz and Grunge sounds. I still remember hearing Mard Arm bellowing on the intro of Touch Me I'm Sick and being like , "Oh hell yes I want to hear more of this"
November 30, 1993 at the Aladdin Theatre in Las Vegas, Nevada, I watched Urge Overkill, Mudhoney and Pearl Jam play a great concert! Man, that was so fun!!! Pearl Jam and Mudhoney jammed at the end of the concert - a sort of Green River reunion jam. SO GOOD!!!! I love these guys. So happy to see them still doing stuff.
All these years later - still pals. Love that
Clicked instantly. Freaking love Mudhoney. Seen them live , spiritual experience!
Some of my favorite guitar tones ever. That's really saying a lot.
Just saw Mudhoney play tonight in little ol’ Margaret River Western Australia…..fkn fantastic!
I love that Mark has the Ibanez 60's Fuzz. That plastic Soundtank pedal was key to my sound back in the grunge era, too. Just got an Ibanez Overdrive reissue, which is the same muff-derived circuit. Sounds killer.

I had both of those pedals till quite recently...the soundtank was a metal casing first run one...I found I much preferred the OD850 "Overdrive" reissue. Great pedal. Only sold it because I got hold of an original.

I remember being at a mudhoney show at the Metro in Chicago. Drunk and taking a wiz. This was when PJ's "Evenflow" came on. I remember having a brief convo with the guy next to me about how I thought that song wasn't that good. I contend PJ is soooo overrated.
Love to see these guys are still great friends after all these years!!!
I used to went crazy playing over their first two records when a teenager back in 90s. Barre chords and relative affordable licks and leads, my first . Then my gear was crap, recently doing the same again now with real vintage BigMuffs, Fender amps and offset guitars....another level of pleasure! going back to that hobby, since I can't have a band and I'm so dummy to be productive home recording, composing or whatever...

As a Mudhoney fan and an owner of several EQD pedals, I'm baffled how the algorithm took 3 years to show me this.
Arm and Turner were my best friend and my Jagger/Richards when I was 17 in 2004. We had graduated from Nirvana and classic rock to Sonic Youth and Minute Men and Mudhoney were the band that made it all make sense.
These guys are my real inspiration since middle school 🐣
those Ibanez 60's Fuzz Soundtanks were so great, I wish I had've known you could put the guts of pedals in better enclosures in the 90s. Maybe I would still have one of the 4 or 5 I had and destroyed.
One of my favourite vids of your series Board to Death !!
An inspiration since I found you in 1990. Thanks boys. Your last show in San Jose was epic. Hope to see you again soon.
Good one, thanks! I need more fuzz
I've long been a fan of the EarthQuaker Dispatch Master V3 Delay and Reverb pedal. Funny, Mark used to be a neighbor of mine, still see him around now and again. I always thought he was more of a "whatever's cheap at the pawnshop" kinda guy. Now I'll be tempted to chat him up about EarthQuaker pedals next time we cross paths.

With Green River, I learned about MH many years before Nirvana or Soundgarden.Call it Grunge or whatever, but these guys are the original Northwest sound.
Everybody in the comments seems to know their gear so lemme just say, Must have a Big Muff. Too much fun. Also totally recommend the Ibanez Tube Screamer. It doesn't overwhelm the natural tone of your guitar. Love it. EDIT: MUDHONEY RULES!
I had an ampeg distortion I loved, but it was a gift. It died at some point. Then I bought a boss overdrive, which was ok. It worked well with the Cry-Baby wah my mother brought back for me as a gift from Florida.
The chain starts with a guitar no the app no the guitar priceless

Is there a more iconic pedal for shredders then the Ibanez tube screamer personally I like my noisekick fx Reagan fuzz for when I want to go doom or drone super heavy dirty low end muff like cheap brothel dirty muff, just nasty, not for everyone but that graphic is so cool easily my fave design next to evil bob ross pedal housings nothing quite like it though, lets Make America Fuzz Again

I don’t understand why you need pedals and are they using all of these during one performance?
@EarthQuakerDevices
2 жыл бұрын
You can easily add different textures to your music in real time very easily just by stepping down. Some people use every pedal for every performance, and some don't use most of them for any performance. Some are used just for specific parts of songs. It just depends on the individual and how they choose to express themselves. Thanks for watching and being here!
Ok so does the chain start with the amp or guitar?…🤔
Ah the grog shop, home home home
Well done guys. Like it or not this type of reviewing pedals is essential. All the pedals have there own sound. But when you perform in a club or wherever, all those intense sounds get lost you m the band, room and audience. Sure they sound incredible played alone or showcased with a drum machine and mixed perfectly in a studio, but crank that amp up and and battle a heavy handed drummer and the other monkeys trying to be heard, suddenly that 299$ - 499$ pedals is lost in the mix and the listener doesn’t even notice. Anyway, I doubt that was the message you we’re giving, but I personally would love to see pedal reviews show more practical sound checks like this. Well...what I meant to say was thank you for this video. I enjoyed it. Cheers

my dude. Mudhoney (or Green River which was basically proto-Mudhoney together with some soon-to-be Pearl Jam members) were basically the firsg Grunge bands. these two guys here could be called the godfathers of grunge and even if it wouldn;t be accurate it would still be somewhat technically correct. Nirvana brought grunge to the mainstream, but mudhoney arguably brought it to existence.
Genios!!!! todo mi amor y admiración desde Argentina!!!
