Ohio native rocker Doug Gillard visited the EQD studios for our latest episode of Board to Death! Doug has played in many bands including Guided by Voices, Nada Surf, and Cobra Verde. Anyone who loves guitar can agree that to know Doug's playing is to love it. His hands ooze raw vibe and soulful expression, so we want you to realize that two of the pieces of gear being showcased are Doug's hands. If I were you, I would examine them closely and just PRAY that some of that mojo travels through the screen thing into your ocular tangerines, and eventually settles in your brain. Doug will walk you through his pedalboard which includes some well-known but extremely useful effects. As a #transmisser user, Doug has discovered a fun little way to use the device that you will all want to try at home. Unless your home is in outer space. Do not use any of our devices within the vacuum of outer space! They will not work and it will destroy your pedal, voiding the warranty! But, I digress.
Some of you are going to comment "What about that BLACK BEAUTY?! What’s the story with that guitar? (aside from desperately needing a fretboard cleaning)" Comment below what you think the story is, since he didn't talk about it at all. I love how these series of videos mainly focuses in Non-Shredder guitar players, opposite to the average guitar mag or guitar oriented media that is absolutely obsessed with that aspect of guitar playing, thank you EQD for include a wider variety of guitarists !

Doug Gillard is a freakin' genius songwriter and guitar player. See "I Am A Tree," one of the greatest rock n roll songs of all time, containing one of the most spectacular rock n roll guitar solos of all time. Also, "Pop Zeus," which he shows us how to play in this video! So good. Thanks EQD!

EARTHQUAKER GLUE! 😉 That was awesome. So much guitar excellence and tonal wizardary! *Gillard is to Pollard as Nels is to Tweedy. I have respect for all the great Guided By Voices guitarists of yore, but Doug is the GBV guitar G.O.A.T. to the Fading Captain's infinite muse.

Incredible how Gillard's tone hasn't changed over the years, even though he's using different amps and effects. It must be down to that sweet LP Custom and the man himself.
Song at 7:17 is “Surgeon is Complete” from Lifeguards’ “Mist King Urth”, which is a Robert Pollard and Doug Gillard side project. It’s a great record.

Great video. Doug is such a great guitarist. Is that a different LPC than the one he usuall plays with the uncovered pickups?
The boss eq pedal image displayed is a bass version. The stock photo used doesn't look like the eqs on his board.

What's the recording set up for this episode, mic wise?
That amp tho. I liked the transmisser but it was really difficult to get a normal reverb off of it.
My guess is that lp custom is a 69! reminds me a lot james williamson's 69 lp custom in the stooges!

S Rawdon I have one. It can be an undertone or overtone mod. I absolutely love it and for the price it’s a killer pedal. It won’t get you to distortion really, but can provide overdrive to creepy tones to just different voices.
All that equipment to do NOTHING.
