Board Game Design: Sell Sheets - when and how to use them.

Ойындар

A sell sheet is a single page advertisement for your product. That’s it. No big mystery. They’re used in every industry, promoting products and services. In the board game world, sell sheets have a variety of different functions. They might be used by a publisher to attract a distributor for their games. They might be used by a distributor to attract a retailer. Or they might be used by a retailer, to advertise their products to shoppers. But in this video we’re going to focus on sell-sheets created by inventors, to promote their prototype game to a publisher.

Yeah, it’s a logical topic to cover - but I’m not the man to do it!!! I only use TTS when needs must, and I’m sure I use it terribly inefficiently!

Hay, nice video. I have only one thing to advice you. Try to upgrade the sound of the videos. Since its mainly speech without a lot visualizations its important to have clear and understandable vocal diction, you have it , but the mic you are using is making it flat and hollow.

@@AdaminWales TTS is the worst way to play boardgames online, except compared to all the other ways. It's great that it exists but it's not exactly user friendly.

Great video as always! Do you have any go to software when making your sell sheets, and do you know of any good templates online one could use?

I just use a word processor (Pages on Mac) so can’t really help, sorry! I think some people use the App Canva.

Thank you, a very insightful video. Ive heard from one publisher that it's worth providing two separate lists of components during a pitch (for a high budget and a low budget version of your game.) Obviously, the higher budget version would often include more components (and sometimes more expensive or elaborate components.) When listing the components on the sell sheet, do you reckon it would be preferable to illustrate the high budget version or the low budget version?

I think that would depend entirely on a knowledge of the publisher, and the types of game they typically make. In general I try to reduce my components as much as possible (the publisher can always add more, or make it deluxe). But that’s because I’m always aiming toward either mass-market (toy stores) or light strategy (hobby stores). I need a cheap retail price - which depends on minimal components. But if you’re designing for a publisher who makes massive, expensive games with lavish components, then it might be better to present the deluxe version. I imagine that the combined approach (giving both options) would mainly be useful for a Kickstarter publisher, who might be thinking about stretch goals.

@@AdaminWales Actually, I like to minimise components as well. I know that a small number of components in a game can be attractive to a publisher due to the lower production cost. With my game, there is only one small difference between the lower and higher budget versions and that is a spinner (in the high budget version.) A die could work just as well in it's place but I admit Ive had a lot of fun using a custom home made spinner in the play tests. And other play testers appear to like it too.

I thought one of the points of getting a Mac was getting good, not "bog-standard", software included by default

Hey 👋… thanks for this amazing video… I have made 5 board games and 2 card games and I’m from Namibia 🇳🇦 Africa. I’m struggling to find a publisher is it possible to assist me with getting me closer to publisher… Is it possible for me to send you the sell sheets of my games and you assist me with your publishers… much appreciate in advance for your assistance.
