I always love it when you refer to “this is how my dad it”! His legacy lives on thru your carpentry. My dad built a barn when I was young and I can still see the trusses and barn being built by him. He taught me a lot. It has stood for over 50 years now. I have enjoyed watching this cabin build and learn something every time I watch.

I wouldn't worry so much about shrinking as I would about swelling when the wood expands with moisture from rain and so forth. Here in New England we always leave a space between boards. That's what the batten is for and if the siding is to be painted we prime both sides to help prevent cupping. Same is done with clapboards.

I believe originally board and batten was with green wood and it was butted right up to each other because it was guaranteed to shrink hence the batten to fill the gap. I thought that was genius. Now it needs to be r13 and r38 respectively and that wouldn’t get you a r1. :)

That is a neat trick cutting relief grooves in those boards. I have done B and B siding on an out building before and had it crawl everywhere... Your craftsmanship is amazing so if you followed your fathers example he must have been a master carpenter in every respect.

Love the tip on the cupped board cutting a relief slot but I noticed something you were doing when nailing in your narrow strips that overlap your boards. I was always told when nailing the narrow strips to only shoot the nails into 1 board. If you should nails into both boards as the board expands and contracts with weather the narrow strip can split. By nailing into only 1 board as the boards change the narrow strip is essentially floating across the board that its not nailed to.

I like the angle on the bottom of the batons. Nice detail

Another comment because I was drawn to share something. Folks in the Ozarks and the Appalachians know timber. I was blessed to be raised in the Ozarks and taught a few things by my father, born 1912, and, in his youth, an old tie hacker. Selling ties to the railroad was one of the few things for cash money that you could do at that time. I showed an interest and he taught me. Every type of tree has particular qualities and weaknesses. This timber won't stand weathering. This one is bad to Crack and warp. This one is easiest to work. This is good firewood. That won't burn well. Some folks don't understand that lumber comes from a living tree and even after it's sawn and shaped it still trys to act like a tree. It trys to to follow the crown. It expands and contracts with the changes in the weather. A good carpenter understands that. He knows timber, it's weaknesses and it's strengths and he can use that knowledge to put something good together, something strong that will stand the stress, the weather, and the time. Now that, my friend, is a carpenter. Someone told me once that Jesus was a carpenter. I thought, "Now, I understand that. I think that might be appropriate." Blessings on you, Mr. Bearded.

Yessir, the older people who lived in days when they had to do everything by hand did learn the strengths and weaknesses of the different species of wood in their area. You’re right- what might not be good for one thing could be perfect for something else. Back when my Dad was a boy there were men who still made cross ties the old way. The tie yard was about twenty miles east of here. I used to see old ties that had been taken up that had been hewn out, not so anymore. The sawmill that I get logs from saw out a lot of cross ties. Goood morning! Now I’ve often wondered , if you take a piece at kiln dried lumber and put it outside , wouldn’t it tend to swell ? I know when it’s raining relative humidity is at 100 %. One of the many things I have no answer to. Thanks , love the channel

Howdy Terry- that’s a good question. However, I’ve put up different species of wood that was completely dry and have never had a problem with it. I have seen the issues with putting up wood that wasn’t seasoned and the problems it caused. I’ve used pure heart redwood, western cedar,cypress, oak, yellow pine, and our Arkansas red cedar for outside trim and board and batten with no issues. There may be some disagreement with this but it works well for me. Thank you so much for the comment and for watching the video. God bless

Very informative video sir. I hadn't thought of boiled linseed oil as an exterior finish. I guess that makes since though since it is used for tool handle finish. How long does it last before needing to apply more? Some of the white pine siding boards we put up on the tree house build were pretty green when we put them up and they have shrunk and there are gaps, but I guess that is what the battens are for 😁. No cracking or boards cupping badly though. Just used galvanized twisted siding nails. Thanks for the video. Lord's blessing upon you and your family!

could have offset the batten trim nails or at least set them in at 40deg so that one could relax and not fracture the batten.

Howdy Jason- the linseed oil doesn’t seal the boards but is more for a preservative. It certainly doesn’t hurt to use a caulking to fill any gaps in the siding. God bless

Howdy- there has been a lot of different ideas about doing board and batten. Not everyone will agree to how it’s “supposed “ to be done. I never use green wood when doing board and batten. The yellow pine that I put up in the video was dry. It has been up over a year and has gone through the four seasons and looks just like it did when I put it up. I can understand in different climates how it could affect what could happen to the wood. If you were using un-seasoned lumber you would definitely need to take a different approach to how you nail it up. Sealing the wood after it is dry helps. Thank you so much for your comment. Is yellow pine generally available or is this a precious local resource. Do you let it dry further, less than 5% moisture before you apply the boiled linseed oil. And how often, in future years would you have to reapply. I'm thinking there must be a lot of upkeep on this beautiful siding job.

Howdy y’all- we have a lot of yellow pine here. There’s four big sawmills around close and all they cut is yellow pine. Linseed oil can be applied with the moisture content higher than 5%. We had really hot weather with hot winds and that will dry yellow pine pretty fast. With any house there will be some upkeep and a log cabin will require some as well. It would depend on where you live as far as putting linseed oil on after a few years. On this particular cabin it will be several years before it needs it again. It’s completely shaded by the trees. I'm not an expert or overly experienced at building, but am curious about why you left a settling space above the door when this appears to be a stick built addition, and the moisture content of the wood was 6% or less. I know many log cabins require a leveling jack to allow for settling...but have never heard of or seen one on a video used for a stick built home or an addition.

Howdy Tom- when the kitchen walls were framed the logs had not completely settled yet. The rafters are attached to the rafters on the log room and the logs were still setting. The 6% moisture level was on the 1x12’s I was using for siding. The siding didn’t extend above the settling space over the framed wall. It can be a confusing keeping up with the settling and what to do where. Hope this answers your question. Take care and God bless

Howdy y’all- you are very observant. The owner is doing his own electrical work. At the present time there is no power to the property but he’s wiring twelve volt and some 110 just in case. I don’t do any electrical work. Where I live if I were to do electrical for a customer I have to be licensed. @@TheBeardedCarpenter I may have already told you this. A friend of mine bought a kit log house that he built with the help of friends. I'm an electrician so I offered to help. When I told him he needed to drill the logs for the wires as he was building it, he didn't like that idea, he said he thought it would weaken the log. We argued about drilling the logs till I eventually said, you are on your own, two more electricians came and left. He eventually wired it himself with wiremold. It looks awful.

Howdy Brian- I used 1x12 southern yellow pine. They are 1” thick. I put one screw in the middle of the board on nailers and let them dry in the hottest part of the summer. The batten strips are 2 3/4” x 1” thick. Will spray boiled linseed oil on this summer. Three parts linseed oil and two parts mineral spirits. Thank you so much for watching the video and commenting. Can you clarify for me what the sizes are in width for the boards and the battens? Thanks

Howdy Samantha- I like to use 1x12 board with a 2 3/4” or 3” batten strip. Some people like to use a narrower board because they are easier to get. It takes a 17-18” tip on a log to get 1x12” boards. Hope this helps. God bless

I don’t have sheathing underneath? Just foam board? I’m in Alaska and don’t want to sheath w OSB sheathing (which is the norm up here) would this method work for me? Can the 1x12 from Lowe’s work for board and batten also? Ty

Howdy y’all- if the building codes will allow you to use the insulation board and put your board and battens over that’s what I would do. You’ll get some insulation value from the foam insulation board that you won’t get from the OSB sheathing. And what you get at a box store will work. I would definitely put some type of sealer/ preservative on them when finished. Hope this helps. God bless you

Howdy y’all- they are 12” wide and the batts are 2 3/4”. This was lumber we sawed on our mill and air dried in the hot, dry part of the summer. Thank you so much for watching the video and commenting. God bless

Great effort looks great.... your method of fastening is incorrect . Your board may split due to movement.nail one side of the board only batten will secure the other side of the board... when nailing on batten, be sure not to put nail through board . Howdy Dan- I have heard of different ways to put up board and batten but have to admit I’ve never heard of this before. Granted if the boards were not seasoned well they can move and split on you, a good reason for the batten strips. However, I sawed these boards and air dried them down to 6% and below. Any time I have ever put up board and batten I always used well seasoned material and don’t have problems with it. I appreciate you watching the video and for sharing this way of putting it on. I’m sure it will help someone. God bless
