The best way to start the Attila the Hun campaign is to lure the iron boar so it attacks Bleda, and then just run all the way out, past the huns, and by the river. In this scenario Bleda dies, the hunters come out, the huns accuse them of treason, and then they all, including the archers, come to your side with no blood shed. The key is to make sure that you're not in line of sight to the archers or they will attack. Plus, in this scenario, you can give Attila a head start exploring the map and grabbing those extra villagers and horses.
@chunumamorton5549

Can run across the river and get a set of villages going, then come back and get a 2nd set. Seems like a cheat though
@lucaskang548

That’s a good strategy, and I remember doing that, but today I have no luck with the archers.
Here's a tip from a lamer in AoE II. If you see on Nomad or Black Forest that your opponent has a "sounder" of Boar nearby and you don't want him having those, you CAN Kill all the Boar with just ONE Villager. Easy: Go to the Group of Boar, wall your villager completely with 4 Palisades right in the middle of the "sounder", and then start attacking the Boars. The Boar won't be able to get to your villager, they'll stay stuck on the Palisade until you kill them, you can repeat to kill many boars without losing a single HP on that lone laming villager. At 5:51, you can see a PERFECT Place you can try this. Killing those 5 Boar with a Single Villager is amazing, you'd be denying your opponent over 1,500 free food.
@tomscorpion6288
9 жыл бұрын
+A. Anderson Well if they scout properly they will find the rotting boars and take at least some of their food. You would need to kill them with archer, for example, to destroy the food rightaway.
@a.anderson2072
9 жыл бұрын
+Tom Scorpion Yes, but that means they'll waste a ton of villager time walking to the boars, as building a mill will no longer work. And, 5 rotting boars will give pretty much no food. If they try to panic salvage food, they'll at best only get 200 food out of 5 boars. With a lot of walking time. Still a win-win for you. You can't really kill them with archers because, by the time you get to the Feudal Age, get the Archery Range and send the Archer over, the enemy will have most likely already walled, or already milled and taken the boars.
@gergelynagyfugedi6864
9 жыл бұрын
+A. Anderson Em.. with that time, especially black forest, instead of walleng your villager you could wall the way, so the enemy do not have access to the boars. Then you can walk with your own villagers, build a mill and get all the 5 boars. Walling in your vill is 4 walls, some + walls, and you walled yourself in black forest.
@a.anderson2072
9 жыл бұрын
+Gergely Nagyfugedi Not really. If the Sounder of Boar is in the enemy area, then walling the sounder off will take way too much wood and time as it'd require you to wall a portion of the enemy area. Walling the forest corridor won't work. The idea of laming is that it needs to be quick and effective. You can kill all the boar, keep the villager inside, and then build Forward buildings in Feudal Age to do a rare BF Flush if desired.

one of my strategies involved rushing 4-5 militia (I play with roughly 30 minute peace treaty because I like shoving 8 players into a 2 player map) and then running around stealing sheep and killing enemy boars
That end cracked me up. xD

Villagers only seem to go rogue when you accidentally target it towards a sheep near your town center. Since you change the villagers task to shepherd it goes into defense mode. You could call it a glitch because it's not consistent across other game play. I believe a lumber jack or a miner would share those same characteristics. If you accidentally clicked a gold pile while running from a boar the villager would attack when hit, rather than running, as a boar hunter would. Changing the villagers task actually changes it's object inheritance in ways that wouldn't be expected. You might want to test this for one of your videos?

With the Attila campaign, there is a better outcome. Get the boar to attack Bleda then run away to set up another camp. Build the TC then get Attila back to the original base, all the units join you, including the archers. Plus you get the resources from the first TC and the second one, with Gaia donating to you twice.
thanks for still making great videos on such an old game. there are still newbs like me who are picking the game even after all this time and these videos are very nice. thank you
That boar attack at the end was amazing, lol. Really nice to have some estimates on when to lure the boar. The info about sheep surprised me but as you say, it makes sense.
If you're Chinese, get Loom right away. Chinese start with +3 villagers, but minus 200 food (it was 150 before, but they changed it in HD). So basically, no food to begin with. Research loom while the villagers are getting food, and by the time it's done you'll probably be close to getting your first 50 food.
@leodexe

Or if you are mayan, also get Loom right away since they start with 4 villagers and therefore need to build more houses, by the time you build a house loom will be done.
I haven't seen a more civilized comment section on yt in the last 5 years or so. Actually this whole channel reminds of the good ol' times when I spent hours on AoE in my childhood. Once, when playing the first level of the Attila campaign, I managed to do something that resulted in Bleda's unit joining my side. I don't remember how I did it, and I have been unable to replicate the feat since.
Very informative and interesting video. I don't want to go too far off on a tangent about the campaign but regarding the first scenario for the Huns there is an easy and funny way to abuse the triggers for extra resources that I've found. You start by running away from Bleda when he's at low HP from fighting the boar just like Spirit demonstrated in order to trigger the archers to come out, by that time Bleda should have been killed by the boar and all of his units (including the archers) will be transferred to your control. When you go west to the settlement it will finish the "running away" trigger giving you extra villagers and a large boost of resources.
Also note boars enjoy a hill advantage, if they hit you down hill they do +25% damage. Vise versa uphil. Would've enjoyed seeing the lure down/uphil. Additionally there is a trick to make the boar go passive: After they attack they lose some distance, use this to place a house (shortkeys!) over where the boar is standing so that your villager starts building and the boar moves out of the construction zone, no longer chasing you, but waiting around and then walking back to its spawn. (I've seen replays where high rated players do this to save their vil when the opponent scout is trying to hinder it).
Outro scene reminds me of the "land invaded by 50 wild hogs" meme that was floating around awhile back.

Great video as always! Good to see you capturing footage for the Magyars, and I really hope you do a Civ overview on them soon. As far as getting loom, would it be safe to say that on something like Arena where you won't get attacked until the Castle Age, It's best to wait until you have multiple town centers so you can keep up village production? It seems to me that getting loom would have to factor in the worth of a villager at that point in the game in addition to the 50 gold that it costs, so it's best to get it once the worth drops to 50 food if you can at all afford it.
This is about as nerdy as it gets. I love it. (fellow AOE dude here)

At the end that poor boar just dying in its sounder group... POOR THING 🐗
I love the intro song!
it is funny that in the Attila campaign if you start the boar but leave Bleda fighting alone and run back to the camp the game will think that you wanted to leave the camp, but then Bleda dies making the archers return from Bleda's location. Then when you see you have control of all the tarkans and the archers that were supposed to attack Attila.
Thank you! I haven't played AOE for YEARS and forgot everything. I just got a PC and trying to pick it back up again.
I got board out of my mind. You went way overboard here with the boar puns

2015: SotL points out boar stealing is a real possibility on tiny map size (1v1). 2020: People start to complain about boar stealing and how unfair it can be.
Always used that strategy for the hun campaign, although I have used the one where you run away before, and that one is really fun.
ty , this is all helpful to an old newby
you can micro de boar inside your TC around villager while they finish the sheep if you let an space for a villager to move, boar needs twice the space so it gets bugged moving around your sheep colectors and its not many time if you use SOTL timing thank you very much for this videos!

The realization that you can't harvest the Iron Boar is heartbreaking.
lmao! the ending! ... my worst nightmare just came true!
I love this idea, to count exactly how many meat you will get from distance, long distance, if you want to build a house!.
I used to live with a guy who was 2nd place in AOE2 in his own nation. And he used to talk about this strat he and his parter wanna do in next tournament in team play. Each of them will try to lure a boar from 1 same enemy with the scout since game start instead of scouting, while multi tasking other stuff of course. And this will completely cripple one enemy’s start while they can then take out the enemy’s teammate. I don’t play AOE so I dont know if this is actual legit in AOE2 scene later on though, just some good memory of high school life.
Great video, but you should've mentioned that if your villager will not make it to the TC in time then you can build a house on top of it and right-click the house continuously, which causes the boar to politely move out of the way and lose aggro of your vill. You can also be clever with the house that you build on the way to the boar by putting it right in front of the boar, so when you shoot it, it has to go around the house and therefore your vill takes less hits and is less prone to dying. I also found that luring with a scout definitely feels safer if you are zigzagging rather occasionally stopping; if you stop, then with lag you might end up taking a free hit from the boar, and in the expansions where they deal extra damage to scouts, it's much more dangerous. Just zigzag continuously and you'll be fine, even with input delay.
Villagers: walk around confused when attacked by military unit Also Villagers: draw a bow out of their butt in a blink to fire at boars
I found a nice way to prevent villagers from dying taking a boar 1v1: instead of setting the gather point on the boar itself from the TC, set it to two tiles away. Then, when you press the idle hotkey a few seconds later, you can lure it back with your full attention.
For the 1st Atilla the Hun campaign: the BEST method is to go to the boar with Atilla, and leave Bleda to die to the Iron Boar. Then, take your few Tarkans and flee to the river to get bonus villagers and resources. Then, (since Bleda is killed by the boar), the Tarkans and the main base joins you. = ton of resources and buildings.
12:00 haha was that real or scripted? Super funny if it was real haha.
@SpiritOfTheLaw
7 жыл бұрын
yeah, that was 100% real. Pretty amazing karma moment
The way i always avoid decay is to pull the lurer in the back side of tc before garrisoning it, and then the boar will stand still inside the town center while i finish the sheep I'm taking. Normally however with 6 on sheep and 4 on wood and then luring boar (not building house) will result 75% of time so that there is under 10 food left on the 6/10th sheep
fun fact with that Attila mission : you can actually have every single unit to your side : Make the boar attack Bleda, run away to the camp, the Tarkans will join, then the archers will join
You can make a boring topic interesting. Impressive !
My brother often builds a Mill, then builds a mill near a Boar and uses the space in between the two mills for Farms once the Boar has been harvested.
13:15 this bug happens when you click the villager not back to the town centre but rather task it onto another resource after you've shot the boar. Then the villager thinks it's gathering wood for example and 'oh hey, I'm suddenly attacked by a boar!' and, as if it's a wolf, the villager will attack it. To fix the bug and save your villager, simply click the boar you're luring again, then task it to garrison inside your TC. Side note: the best tactic in the first mission of the hun campaign is to run south with atilla at the start. You get the Hun commander and a couple tarkans and when you run west you get villagers to build a TC with. Shortly after Bleda will attack with some tarkans left but it's a fight that's actually hard to lose. Afterwards, you get everything bleda owns, including his TC! So you'll have two TCs in the dark age!
I think it's worth mentioning that the villager only "disobey" your command when you send them to harvest from another ressource (sheep, wood..) while luring. otherwise it always goes as planned
after 4 years I finally get the pun
Boars also act as walls and block pathing. I got stuck one laming an enemy's boar :D imgur.com/z0qdFwA Karma :P

By the way, boars and vils are also affected by hills, so a boar attacking the vill downhill kills it earlier than 5 TC lines of sight, and later if it's going uphill. Something to also have in mind.
Boar as an offensive unit:I once played a game on HD, on Gaia, to watch some AIs fight.I decided to send an army of wolves, boars, and deer to attack one.The town center, along with villagers killed them all and started eating them.Except one.One kept attacking their town center.Slowly.AND THEY JUST DIDN'T NOTICE IT.In the end, they were stuck in the Feudal age for the entire game, and eventually the boar made them resign.
fortress normally has standard resources including boar. nvm that:{i normally build the house with the villager after the one luring the boar to get the boar in faster. if you need more "wiggle room" you can garrison your villager and when the boar walks away shoot it again and so on. furthermore with 3 on wood you often come in with the boar pretty exactly when 3 sheep are depleted with 4 a bit before 4 are. (depends on the distance and on your time starting to take sheep and if you are taking 1 sheep at a time.)} i found that the villager normally starts attacking the boar instead of running if he/she/intersex is not a hunter; so if i accidentally clicked on a tree or a sheep (most commonly) instead of onto a blank space. (and I'll...) "if you expect they might steal your boar" unless you have the ballance of power mod you should just expect that if it is not islands or unless you would need to get loom to take the forward boar first or you have not found all your boar (actually you might have to expect it even more in that case) thank you for the video. was nice. i think i might have asked this again, but still: if i want to boom off a fast castle how to do it best? assuming a generic civ 2 things come to mind: when to up? 25+2 vills or 24+2 or rather more to start off with more resources in castle? and secondly: what should one prioritize in castle age? you spoke about wheelbarrow and handcart but horsecollar or even heavy plow? bowsaw? or rather more towncenters? how many towncenters are best in which situation? so many questions around that and it is already a pretty specific scenario. it seems to me as if that should be a solvable equation, if one defines a clear situation, though it still seems pretty complex. long comments ftw!
thank you
