Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley (1969)

Музыка

BO Diddley - Bo Diddley, from a more innocent age. Three Guys, a girl with a tambourine and a slightly bemused audience. How thing have progress, not sure for the best. I've posted Tom Petty and Bo performing 'Mona' live; great fun and worth a look.

I saw Bo Diddley in 1982 at the Palladium in NY. He was unannounced in a roster of performers at a benefit for... the Hell's Angels. His performance that evening blew everything else away, especially Jerry Garcia who was the headliner and so wasted by the time he got on stage he could barely move. Bo Diddley played with our heads, moving, shaking, stopping, starting, cracking up, cracking the audience up. Best ever.

This is the 1969 performance from the TV variety show “Music Scene.” Most of the crowd considered this tune something old from the Fifties, and not contemporary enough for them. At least that was the vibe from watching the show in its context and the crowd’s muted reaction after the performance. Their loss!

Holy shit I love Chuck Berry and he's all I've known for most of my life to be a pioneer of rock n roll, but then I read an article comparing him to Bo Diddley. The influence Bo had on rock feels more appartent in terms of the heaviness rock has to this day. Bet back the deep ass palm muted chuggy riffs were so unheard of. I hope Bo is just as celebrated as Chuck as they represent two sides of what makes rock awesome these days. Chuck brings in memorable melody and Bo brings in the percussive rhythms.

I saw Bo perform at a club in the Chicago suburbs in the early '90s. During the opening act, he came out and sat right next to me at the bar. It's about the only time I was too star struck to say hello to a celebrity. I regret not saying anything, but, man, I got to see Bo Diddley in concert. I will always cherish that.

??? I was simply stressing how young white people of that era were regularly exposed to white musician's versions of great black musician's songs long before ever hearing the original. As you may know, Elvis made his name with songs written by Big Boy Crudup, and other black musicians while the original authors were shafted.

@garyp4205 But these people still sit there like stiffs at a funeral while Bo rocks the hell out of it. Like they're scared of the black guy and his loud guitar or something. It's a sorry sight to see a great performer working so hard in front of an audience that's giving him nothing back at all. Compare to the video of Bo Diddley at Madison Square Garden in NYC in 1973 where he and the audience feed off each other with tons of energy.
