BNSF & more! Needles Subdivision (December 2022)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On December 8th, 2022, I spent the entire day (sunrise to sunset) filming freight trains on the Needles subdivision in the Southern California Mojave Desert. Had nearly perfect weather for a December day with temps in the low 30s during the early morning hours and high 50's during the afternoon in Fahrenheit. Also had nearly no wind or clouds the entire day.

spencerhughes2255, your train videos are absolutely the most sophisticated ones I’ve come across. The gorgeous southern California scenery, your clear and crisp videography, your understanding of lighting, the artful transition from one scene to another, and - oh yes! - the trains themselves. Awesome, amigo!

I wonder how NS & CSX locomotives wind up way over here? And probably vice versa for that matter.

It’s called run through power… These explanation I get from a Trains forum and is posted by user Chad Thomas: Borrowing locomotives happens all the time for various reasons. How ther railroads keep track is horsepower hours. If say NS borrows a UP SD40-2 (@3000HP) for a day then NS will owe UP 72,000 horsepower hours. Now NS can pay UP back by sending them a 6000hp unit for 12 hours or 2 3000hp units for 24 hours, either way the debt will be canceled. That is just one example. Each railroad (usually the power desk) keeps track of each other railroads horsepower hour balance. When a railroad gets a lot of horsepower hours in debt with another they will usually send the owed railroad a bunch of units to pay of the debt. This means the owed railraod can pretty much use the units as they see fit. That could mean the forign unit may end up at the farthest points of the owed railroad.
