Same boat with you fellas late 80s saw Crew walk Hell Track and I was all in. The first time I rode a 9 tooth rear sprocket double wall rim with a fatty 100 psi tire blew me away. I felt forced into mountain bikes never really liked ‘em . a 20inch bmx with 44 16 gears you couldn’t keep up and as you put on weight as you get older just felt unsafe. Today I ride a 20 inch 36 9 gears with 155 crank arms “ mama look I’m ok with my short legs and husky build😂 I used to hate it when I was called husky in the 80s now I’m like this grown ass earned man body son. Gen x we’re the greatest generation now. Always the coolest. I can’t wait for Lori to get out of prison so we can go ass sliding

Over 20 years of riding, here are some of the most iconic sprockets I remember having. 44t DK Iron Cross - The first nice sprocket I ever bought, it went on my DK Legend back in my race days. 44t Profile Whippet - One of the sharpest and most iconic looking sprockets in BMX history, Golden days! 44t Sharp Hardcore - Remember that 420 chain wearing holes in your seat stay? Street Cred! My Kink Emprire Revision B probably weighed in over 30lbs at this point. 30t Tree OG - A revolutionary sprocket at the time. Extremely durable, light, classic looking. Probably my favorite in terms of practicality but it also had a really classic look that I still love. 25t Profile Spline Drive - Another huge evolution was the spline drive sprocket. Aesthetically it reminds me of my Tree sprocket, but it's much more refined like the Whippet. In my opinion it's the most beautiful sprocket I've ever seen. I'd rather have the 30t, which Profile makes, but I got the 25 to match the driver on my hub which only came in 9t.

As usual, homie, very much appreciate the time and effort you put into these tech vids. It's worth mentioning, though, that multiple sprocket bolt positions is very desirable, even if you don't bash your sprocket or use a guard, as the bolt hole wears and gets bigger over time. I remember being broke and sweating my un...tightenable...? sprocket, until I realized that I could just switch to another hole and start fresh. It was a solid disc, w/no machining, so I even ended up drilling a couple extra holes myself. That bad boy held out for YEARS until the teeth ground down and shark-toothed. Cheers, love and respect!

Hope this isn't a stupid question, but which chain should I run if I want to run the 30T Profile Galaxy spline chainring with a rear cassette. Not sure yet, but maybe something like a 8-10s cassette in the rear. Shimano or Microsift setup. I'm asking because I would want to run the 165mm BMX crank upfront with threated BB into normal hardtail mountain bike frame, want to create a half bread. Half pump track, half bike park kinda machine. Would still need to figure out the chain-line etc.

I was gonna say I don't understand how rotating a sprocket gives you more life for sprocket grinds cause it rotates with your cranks, then I relise "Ooo yeah the cranks get in the way so you can only do grinds when your cranks are level so it only wears down two spots" made me feel dumb af and I mess with bikes all the time 🤣

Hello, my son is 5 (big for his age,) and has started riding the pomp track. I bought him an Specialized RipRock bmx 20”. It is not the lightest but working on it. Right now the freewheel is 18t and the sprocket is a 40t. Going to replace the sprocket to save weight and mostly, so he can have a little more power. I am thinking to replace the sprocket with a 20t. What do you think?

  • @carternevill

If you're going 20t front and 18t rear he'll be pedaling really fast to go slow even. That will make it super easy to pedal but will have no speed.

Question, i bought bmx for my kid to cycling every evening for fun. It is 44t front and 18t rear. My kid said quite heavy to paddle at start. So im thinking to change the sprocket size. What size of sprocket and cassette should i go for so that easier for my kid to paddle better and faster at start?

  • @OurBMX

Are you sure it’s a 18t? It should be 16. A 39 tooth sprocket will make it easier, but if you have a local shop, I suggest taking it there. 44/16 means the bike is pretty old and could use an update, if you have the cash.

@@OurBMX Sorry my bad, yah its 16t rear, i just double check it. Ok, so 39t for sprocket, rear just leave it 16t? How about the size you mentioned that now a day bmx usually comes with 25t+9t, is it much much easier for kid to paddle? Is it possible i go for 25t+9t? Well actually the bmx i just bought it last year. First sorry im quite noob in this, the shop guy told me its 2020 model, a bmx race bike type. I bought it because they doesnt have any stock for 18" kid bike. And he said 20" bmx is fine for my kid, so i go for it. And since my kid told me quite heavy to paddle at start so i started to google around until i found your useful video. Then after that im quite suprise why they still selling 44t+16t bmx. Yesterday i noticed my friend's 2 unit bmx that he bought for his kids have smaller sprocket, he bought it back in 2017. Am i got scammed by the shop? Lol.

Hard to say without seeing the bike. Some race-focused bikes still use 44/16 gearing ratio. But to answer your question, if you switch to a 39 tooth, it will make it easier for your kid to pedal, yes. Good luck!

basically the driver teeth amount divided by the amount of teeth on your sprocket will give you how many revolution the wheel will rotate on one crank rotation. 25/9=2.777 28/9=3.111 30/9=3.333 I ran a 28t 9t for all round riding its the best for jumping gaps, random dirt jumps without run ups, random quarters with open area run ups to gain momentum is much easier than running 25t 9t which looks like hamster riding a bike but works for beginners for grinding. good to know what's ratio works for your riding discipline. started on 44/16, 36/14, 30/11, 30/10 and finally 28/9 king of ratio's

Oh yea, someone point me in the direction of a spline insert that is 22mm AND will fit the RNC titanium sprocket. The RNC came with a 24mm insert, and the sprocket is marketed to use the profile insert design. But the RNC titanium sprocket is thinner than the aluminum ones. So, the Profile insert will not work because it is not thick enough to seat all the way against the RNC sprocket, without damage. And if you did press the profile insert all the way till it seats, then it will be protruding out the other side of the sprocket, instead of sitting flush. I'm at a loss. RNC guy is.......difficult to get a hold of.

They slowly got small and a smaller over time. When I started riding as a kid in early 2000’s the common ratio was 36/13, then mid 2010 (I think) was around the time that 25t sprockets were coming out. Also the rear hubs went from a freewheel to a 1pc driver that went directly into the hub.

@@OurBMX "When cassettes came onto the scene and the larger-sized freewheel wasn't necessary anymore." They are still considered necessary by most people who run actual BMX bikes. BMX stands for Bicycle Motocross (AKA: Bicycle Moto-X, AKA: Bicycle MX, AKA: BMX), i.e., a bicycle version of the off-road motorcycle _racing_ sport that's called motocross. The traditional sprocket sizes allow for smaller changes to gearing for different tracks (for example, going from 44/16 to 45/16 isn't as big of a jump in gear ratio as going from 25/9 to 26/9 is), and larger sprockets are subject to less stress for a given amount of force applied to the crank arms. Here's an example of a top BMX racer's bike: elevnracing.com/connor-fields-win-his-2nd-usa-bmx-1-pro-title-at-usa-bmx-grand-nationals-tulsa-ok/ Notice that it doesn't have a sprocket that's the size of an Oreo cookie. The bikes on which dainty sprockets are now standard, are offshoots of BMX bikes. The divergence from BMX bikes started in the early/mid '80s. The things that they are designed and used for have nothing to do with motocross.

Marketing technique IMHO. Your sprocket still flexes when you pedal hard from the start, meaning wear and tear sets in more if you ride hardcore daily. Smaller sizes really dosen't matter, but with ample amount of pressure each day gives it more probability of cracking or chipping on the metal. I always run 39 or 40T to 16 FC, so if I torque for speed it'll be a speed I can handle, or at least something enough to clear a jump at full adrenaline to make me cautious and think WTF am I doing.
