BMW X5 E70 Sway Bar End Link Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I demonstrate the steps to replace the sway bar end links on a 2007 BMW X5
The bushings can become worn and broken and they start moving around without tension and cause sloppy handling.
BMW part numbers: 31356859651 and 31356859652 (verify fitment for your car)
Tools required:
18mm wrench
Socket wrench 3/8" drive
#40 Torx bit socket
Socket wrench 1/2" drive
18mm 1/2" drive socket
Penetrating fluid
This process should be the same on the following years:
2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013

Thanks for making this video. My X5 was making a quiet, muffled clunking sound over small bumps at low speed. During the pandemic lock down I decided to tackle the end links and replaced all four. The car feels brand new and the steering is tighter. Your video gave me the confidence to take on this work.

Good video. My employer would be proud of you. LOL. As a mechanic they constantly remind me I must work with gloves. I'm getting better. Thanks

Failed to advise on relieving the tension of the seat bar against the link . . . unless having both wheels off the ground does it.

Great video, thanks for sharing. Are you planning on doing any other E70 videos?

Thanks for your comment. I have another video for the thrust arm/tension strut replacement that is very common suspension issue. I have other things I need to fix also, so I am going to do a video on replacing tail light assemblies, valve cover replacement, vanos solenoid, and possibly some hvac sensors.

Just a quick question, did you replace these because you found that your car was steering all over the road? Mine is doing that at high speeds (highway) and it's actually very dangerous, I did notice the bushings are kinda dry and not in the best shape. I didn't want to replace these if the problem is something else...so ready to get rid of this car 2009 BMW 48i X5 E70

I did not have the same symptoms you describe. Mine was squeaking loudly over bumps such as speed bumps. Your issue may also be related to these end links, but I can't confirm.

Did you have to get a wheel alignment after installation?

As it turns out, I also had to get the upper right control arm replaced by an independent mechanic shortly after that so I had them do the alignment.

Ok.. I have an 03 x5 e53 so I am assuming the procedure is pretty much the same. The reason i asked is because I just got an alignment done and didn't want to have to get another one, if I can wait 6 months. I am not having any symptoms other then when I brake it feels like a knock, like something may be worn out but that's about it. She's got 273k so I figure that the control arms may need to be replaced.

This is the 2007 X5 3.0si. The one shown is the right front end link. I did not replace the rear ones, so I can't remember if they are similar.

@@DIYGuyUSA okay. Thx. Is there any special precautions/tricks on replacing the rear sway bar links, or is it straight forward?

I just used a jack and put a jack stand on each side as I was working on it.
