Just had our 2011 X5d with 150K miles at BMW dealer. Car went into limp mode. Codes P0401, 48DC, P0101 and P0299. They say it needs 1) replace manifold pressure sensor, throttle body, and unblock exhaust back pressure sensor tube. Quote: Parts & labor $1,200, 2) replace diesel particulate filter w/low EGR cooler hwd, w/ all sensors on soot filter/ Quote: $8,500, 3) replace all 4 broken partition shelves at fire wall. Quote: $1,100. 4) Both turbo charge pipes seeping/leaking oil need replacement before and after intercooler w/ temp sensor. Also, replace pressure regulator valve. $1,200, 5) Replace both front complete thrust arms, they are worn out. $1,300. We love the car it' in great condition and gets 26mpg but will not spend that money. I requested quotes from two other independent Bimmershops, hopefully they can do much better. Root cause of these problems is not running the engine long and hard enough. Your advice of operating engine once per month at 70-80mph for 1 1/2hrs is spot on. I wish we knew that from the beginning.

let me just add this, when doing maintenance specially these 2 important and easy to replace item the oil change: you only need 71/2 quarts of oil. if your D is asking for a 1 quart of oil due to low level, do not put 1 quart, rely on the dipstick, most probably u only need half quart. the second one is air filter : check the filter box if its properly installed. mine has a broken clip and only notice after 2 yrs of no maintenance yes i know. 😅 again i thank bimmer L for encouraging us to take care of our D.

Good video man. My e70 30d is currently in the workshop for a failed damper pulley. U can add that to the list. Also, you mentioned dpf regen, If you don't do enough highway driving then the dpf/cat can block up and cause a cascade of problems due to heat and pressure buildup. Blown turbo seals, incorrect diagnosis of failed turbo due to excessive pcv blow by are just some. If your state allows it, remove the cat/dpf and blank the egr to prolong the life of your precious diesel x5. I have also put a new battery in and it needs front brake pads, front strut mount bushings and front sway bar links. But I will have to do that next month because the damper pulley is quite an expensive (labor intensive)job. Peace and love to all bmw owners✌️

Mine is a 2009 m57. I recognized what was wrong because I had the same experience with my e60 520d before this. You lose power steering and get a burning rubber smell, sometimes a bit of smoke to go with it. I opened the bonnet and could see that the crank pulley had sheared off. I live in a hot climate so rubber parts tend to go quickly here in sunny Durban, South Africa.

Two other videos have mentioned diesel fuel intrusion into the dde (engine computer) one video I watched identified it as a leak in the diesel temp sensor on the low pressure section of the fuel system. Apparently the diesel leak into the connector and syphons thru the harness into the computer. I’ve heard of this happening on automatic transmissions in Mercedes diesel cars. The atf gets pushed thru the electrical connector on the trans and makes its way thru the harness into the tcm. Pretty wild

Harmonic balancer failed, #1 injector, thermostat, Y coolant fitting above the glow plug control module failed & 3 windows actuators/regulators & an alternator. I think that's about it. All in all, the parts for BMW's seem to be very reasonable IMO. Sometimes it's the way the cars are built that make them a real bear to work on. Oh & by the way I did get the 2011 X5 35d today. My honest opinion is to stay away from high mileage BMWs regardless of the price. Especially these diesels can start giving you all kinds of issues with the diesel components at that mileage. We’re actually looking to get rid of ours soon (110k mi) and get a gasoline X6 with 50k miles or below. On the other hand you never know because our X5 has been fairly good to us for 6 years but I won’t keep it for much longer 👍

@@vickibailey6603 I’m considering selling mine. 105,000 miles. If you haven’t bought yet. If your really wanting something like this. But otherwise I’d say the same. Stay away from these high mileage diesels. I’ve been told that BMW makes great diesels, hence why I bought it a while ago. But that’s if you’re in Europe, since they have less emissions restrictions compared to US. Here in the US there are additional emissions systems built in place that can break down in the long run.

Unfortunately there’s no way of tricking the system via software programming. You can pull the tank out , take out the sensor and install a 10 Ohm resistor instead of it to trick it. Another way is to replace the whole tank they don’t make these sensors /:

Probably if you can find the wires going to the sensor, just cut the wires at an accessible location and install the resistor there. Or if you don’t want to cut the wires, remove the wires plastic insulation and install a jumper there. Don’t need to remove the whole reservoir to access the sensor. Just leave everything in place. I guess, the ideea is to cheat the computer thinking the reservoir is full. I’m not sure with the emisions regulations in your state. Up here in Ontario Canada we use to have emision tests mandatory every 3 years but several years ago they scrapped the test.
