yup, my right rear spring rusted and broke at bottom (2004 E83). Thanks for the helpful vid. This does not look nearly as bad as I thought.

Saved me a lot of money! Got my springs replaced. Was a bit worried, at how low the shaft needed to go to fit the new one. But greasing, and a good kick, made the bottom part of the spring snap in place immediatly. Good stuff mate, thx for making a vid for this.

Just did this. Do yourself a favor, disconnect the brake line bracket and sway bar end link. Especially the brake line bracket as there is a lot of pressure on it when cranking down on the lower control arm to insert the spring. The Bentley repair manual also says to disconnect the rear axle bolts but I didn't find that necessary.

Great video !! If you don't have a bottle jack like I did you can also use a small car jack. I almost tried the scissor jack that comes with the car 🤔🥴

I don't think they beef'ed it up for 2006. That's the year I have and am now watching your video to see how to replace mine ;)

I think this is a very common fault on post 2000 cars, my cars from the 60's, 80's and 90's never breaks springs, but wifey's 2004 Audi and my late dad's X3 have broken both the rear ones.. :p Well, new ones acquired to be mounted as soon as the snow leaves! Thanks for the instructions, and the classic Simpsons clip! :D

If you would have looked on Bimmerworld, they have replacement upgraded Bilstein B3 springs for $70 a piece. So $140 for the pair. A spring broke on me last year as well, so I bought these and replaced both. Sucks you didn't see the Bimmerworld springs, but oh well. Love the bottle jack technique, I just had a buddy pull down and I had to put them in real quick. I'll remember this for the next time.

As a mechanic I watch this video and cringe at every unsafe thing u are doing. I’m not trying to be a jerk. I just want other people that watch this and also attempt to do it themselves to be very aware of what u are doing. 1 little slip of that bottle jack while yours hands/fingers are up in there and u’d be in a world of pain and more than likely not be able to move. Like other people stated u should have disconnected the sway bar link and any other cables/lines to give u a lil more working room there for not needed that bottle jack at all. 99% of the time the broken spring should almost fall out, and the new one would take very little downward pressure on the hub. even just leaning on it with your other arm, hand or foot. Then when u were jacking up on the hat of the brake rotor. It shouldn’t have taken that much upward pressure and the jack wasn’t centered, which was very close to slipping off. Again I’m just trying to offer a few SAFER ways. Just the same u got it done. Luckily without any injuries. 👍🏼

must remove lower sway bar link nut , it puts tremendous pressure on it when you push down. Don't need a jack get a wife, its better .

@@MOAB Really? This is surely taking things a bit too far. Best not even THINK of a song while recording a video :) A good informative video non the less. I did a done a spring replacement on my two X3s about ten time now between them, and just had to see how the other guys are doing it and rather pleasingly my method seems very close to yours. I never did zip-tie the upper spring pad - I usually just stick it on the small nub on the top with some grease and it stays there long enough for me to manipulate the spring into its place.

That was too easy. I removed springs from a '73 Corvette (front) and a 1970 Oldsmobile. Had to use a spring compressor and disconnect the lower control arm from the spindle. Took many difficult hours. I was lucky I got it done without killing myself.
