BMW Steering Rack Bush Repair Kit and Three Pin Tool| X8R Broken Noisy Clunky Vibrating

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Link to purchase the item: x8r.co.uk/bmw-steering-rack-r...
Important!
We state 70nm of torque when tightening the locking cap, this will vary between models so be sure to check your cars specific torque setting before you tighten this.
The symptoms
Clunking noise from steering when turning into full lock, clunking noise when driving over bumps, speed bumps and potholes
The problem
Over time the thrust bush within the steering rack disintegrates & wears down, this causes excess noise coming from the steering. BMW has recognised this issue and introduced a “quality improvement” kit- a OEM kit that includes an improved design bush, spring, bung, jubilee clamps for the steering gaiters and a replacement locking screw cap complete with o ring.
The locking screw cap also requires a specialist tool, which can also be purchased from BMW but at a hefty price tag. You also require the BMW-spec steering grease. Up until now there was nowhere in the UK selling this complete kit.
Our solution
To make the fix as easy as possible, we have created our kit where all the components can be purchased from the same place. Our complete kit comes with the OEM BMW improvement kit (which comes with 2 years BMW warranty), the OEM BMW grease, and our X8R Steering Rack Tool.

    Hello! I just changed this piece because when the engine is off I had some tick noise when I turn right and left. After change, this noise disappear but now when the engine is on and I turn the steering wheel left and right on very low speed or when the car is stoped I have some small tick on the steering wheel. I am not sure that my mechanic use the dinamometrical key to tighten the nut!

    I had a steering rack replacement in my f20 a year ago. My issues were only when the car got to running temperature and I drove over few potholes. Then this annoying clunking noise came. Right now a year later I begin to have the same problems. I will definitely try this repair kit on my own. I experience these noises only when the weather is really warm or the car was driven a bit.

  • @wimcalant8425

    No it does no solve the highway problem. This is due a badly designed steering rack . Only the lci verison of the 4 series received a better rack. But this is a cost of 3000 $ at least. My experience is that good tyres improve a bit the straight line stability and use thz sport setting if you have it. But comfort mode stays bad even after this fix. I have f32 n55 and really great disappointment regarding steer feel and the lack of straight line stability.

    @@Matthew-km6fi yeah, indeed not all have the adjustable steering. And yeah steering is much too light in many of the f series based BMW'S. I had some improvement by installing micheling ps4 over pirelli pzero pz4. These were really poor handling tyres the car moved his back on every pothole you hit. But it does not really improve significantly the steering . I test drove recently a bmw g20 and that steered much more decently. But to be honest mini cars are even steering much and much better. Unbelievable they are actually managed by BMW but do have different steeringfeel and better handling. Thinking of bying a mini clubman to replace the 4 series .

    Hi, thanks for the informative video. According to BMW's service bulletin, they want you to remove the gaiters, remove the track rods, and then insert a sophisticated measuring device to the thrust piece and check for play in micrometer level. Did you have a problem in the future after the repair because you skipped that step? Why does BMW suggest a very comprehensive repair procedure? Can skipping this step cause problems in the future?

  • @zarthrobert417

    @zarthrobert417

    Жыл бұрын

    Skipping this step with measuring device may cause higher friction in yoke, rack and pinion movement or too much play, noise and wear. Tightening with 17 or 70Nm as suggested at 6:20 may cause damage. The repair is not for amateurs. Please let the BMW service do this Job.

  • @hanynowsky

    @hanynowsky

    10 ай бұрын

    @@zarthrobert417putting sufficient MOs2 or complex lithium based grease in the yoke will help avoid excessive friction. This kit is a workaround for an already worn rack shaft and pinion (wear in the center only). The play check is to make sure minor steering adjustments during cruising are precise. There is a more complicated ZF procedure that stipulates pre-loading using torque then angle.

    Replacement is not that difficult. HOWEVER if this is done by an official dealer, the procedure i different. The issue is that the new part needs to be screwed in with the correct pre tensioning on the spring. So official procedure is using an measurement of "play" when there is a certain amount of torsion on the steering rods. So a special digital gauge is used to measure how much play there is. By fastening the new part randomly you risk or early wear and too heavy steering and even fatal damage of the rack or too loose steering with even more knocking when the part is not screwed deep enough. So better and saver to let the dealer do this work. Will cost you between 400 and 500 eur/dollar
