BMW R60/5 AIRHEAD COMPRESSION TEST

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In my last video, I introduced the BMW Airhead to you and I realized many of you were also very interested in motorcycles. It's always refreshing to start a new project but to share a project which you all enjoy. For those who do not know much about motorcycles just yet, I hope I will be able to share my knowledge and skills with you to make things easier
one your end!
I joined a couple BMW Facebook groups as I saw there was an enormous following online. I posted one picture within the BMW Boxer Club group and I received a bunch of friendly messages to share
as much of my restoration process as possible. Many members pointed out that the Craven Equipment luggage bags were very special and that I should keep them in a safe place. There were a couple members which insisted the front fairing (Vetter Windjammer) should be thrown out the window! This is an accessory from the past and many riders do not want fairings on their motorcycle anymore, as it looks hideous.
These items will be put aside, for now, so I can get work done on the motorcycle and if I'm done, I can always see if I would like to re-use them in the future.
In today's video, I will share with you how I removed the accessories and get ready to test for compression on the BMW R60/5. I do know this bike started when I purchased it, but only for a couple
seconds. The carburetors were leaking and I had a feeling the engine sounded pretty good...but that doesn't always mean much! Either way, I took the compression test gauge and got everything set up.
The left and right cylinders were tested and I received some values I did not really want to see. It's not the end of the world, but I will be looking at the engine closely to make sure it has better compression.

Thanks a lot! I have made another 50 feet of this bench on the other half of the shop and it works very well. I also added plywood half way down for storage purposes and I can't be more happy about it.

I do hope you kept the windjammer, and bought some Krauser bags. You will love both on long rides.

I have kept the windjammer in storage and I would love to find some Krauser bags! I would love to document a trip once I'm done rebuilding everything! Thanks for tuning in -Andreas

I'm not sure if the previous owner bent the rods inside or if this seat was purchased like this...either way, it's a great solution to be closer to the ground. I will be replacing this seat once I'm done with the frame assembly and hopefully that will be sometime soon. Thanks for viewing and leaving a comment, I appreciate it! Regards Andreas

Thank for sharing this information, Paul! I guess if you make quality products for the right customer base, you can be in business for a long time. Unfortunately the panniers I have were modified to fit this bike, as the bottom was cut to fit around the mufflers. One lid is also missing, but that could easily be replicated with some fiberglass. For now they have a spot on a shelf until I decide what I want to do with them. Regards Andreas

Thanks for tuning in John! The fairing will not go back onto the bike, as I would like to keep it stock/original. I agree, the fairing is an old accessory and not many enthusiasts like this style anymore.

I'm looking at a 1972 R60/5 so this is helpful. Do you know what the thread is on the plugs?

That's awesome, I hope you can bring yours back to life too. I just measured the thread and it is M14x1.25 (14mm x 1.25 pitch). I hope this helps, best regards -Andreas

From the looks of things … this one somewhat tired old bike … not one of the highly desirable types and vintage , but could be made attractive once again with work . So I hope you did not pay much and have it primarily as a teaching tool.

This bike did look tired and once I took all the major components apart, I realized it needs quite a bit of work. The R60 (599cc) was probably more desirable in Europe and here in North America the roads were more suitable for 750cc or 1000cc bikes. I'm learning a lot as work on this bike and that's what makes it worthwhile! The end result is in sight and I cannot wait to take it for a spin...but I will try to enjoy the process before that special day. I will reveal all the figures once everything is said and done in a video. Thanks again for a great comment! Regards Andreas

I had a 74 R75/5 I bought for $500 in 1977. it had been in an accident and the sidecar was trashed. I do like your videos but I think you talk too mush!
