For years BMW's R1200GS has been king of the adventure touring category. In particular, the up-spec Adventure model. Now, KTM's Super Adventure is on the scene and looking for the ADV crown. In this episode of OTW, Zack Courts and Editor In Chief Marc Cook take these two across California to determine a winner. In an odd twist, wet-behind-the-ears Zack seems to like the venerable GS-A, while the more stately EIC is in love with the rambunctious new KTM. I just finished a 3400 mile trip on a BMW R1150GS Adventure today. I absolutely LOVE these big dual sport bikes! However, despite all the new electronic goodness of the R1200GS, I'll stick with the primitive road fixable mechanical R1150GS ADV!
Well, I can’t afford either of these so...I’ll just have to stick with my little, inexpensive, indestructible, CRF 250 while I dream of having a big pimpin’ KTM or BMW.

Working at a KTM dealership I saw first hand the fact that KTM engines have issues and maintenance is critical to the dependability of the KTM. Where BMW is a tried and tested machine and has a long standing record of dependability. Maintenance on the BMW is not nearly as critical to its dependability like with the KTM. So for those who want to ride and not wrench on their bike I would suggest the BMW hands down. KTM's have not been tested like the BMW. I don't believe that the KTM engine has the stamina of the BMW work horse engine that has been around for a long time.
The "Sticky out motor" is the whole reason I want a BMW.. keeps your feet warm in winter!
I tried both. KTM is good one, but V shape engine has more vibration than BMW boxer. So I decided to take Bimer, only because of vibration.

Amazing Battle I was Waiting For This This Really Top of The Line Adventure Bikes
Ugh this review seems pretty biased. I recently rode the R1200GSA, 1190, 1190R and 1290SA.... All for about an hour each in various conditions. The 1290SA feels like the 1190S except slightly larger/bulky. Who would have thought? The only limitation is the tires. Proclaiming that the KTM 1290SA is only for the road..... is just ludicrous. As a side note the 1190/1290 motors are absolutely vicious. Not just the power, but they have a LOT of character. I liked all the bikes, and would gladly own any of them. Time to start saving up for next spring.
Nice review guys, I've also ridden both on dirt and blacktop and they are simply awesome bikes!
I somehow cannot understand how you could state that the KTM is not better off-road than the BMW with its Telelever suspension. This kind of suspension is not helping off-road as far as I'm concerned. Front end dive prevention is great on the tarmac but on uneven surfaces I'd see it as a disadvantage since it doesn't handle "bulges" as well. Instead or going somehow "over" working with the shock absorber, it will lift the whole front of the bike. Or am I wrong? It kind of wants to go "through" it rather than over it. I had this explained by some guys who were supposed to be doing quite a lot of off-roading on motorcycles. They were switching from R1200GS' to KTMs. Anyway, I know that the GS is a brilliant bike on the road. Actually, I've never ridden anything that well-balanced. At the same time, I really cannot stand how the boxer engine works and therefore perceive the KTM as a more complete bike with its powerful and great-sounding V2 engine. I have this 2016 1290 T and yes I ride off road rallies and highway on it. Plus its a 160HP 140ft/lbs on the KTM. Both are such great Bikes.
Do-anything flexibility? Bone simple and reliable? Repairable in the remotest reaches and easy to get parts? KLR650. Accept no substitute. It's equally awkward on paved roads and fire roads, easier to pick up when you drop it, and a LOT cheaper to fix. These many virtues free the KLR rider to attempt more stupid things with fewer regrets.

I bought the KTM and have no regrets. I have put 23,000 plus miles on it over the last year and a half. If I could buy a GS I would! I believe both are great machines.

Hi Zack & Marc. As a GS adventure owner I am bias towards BMW. Like allot of GS owners I will never take it offroad. I bought the GS for its all round versatility. Our Scottish roads are not the best at times and the GS soaks them up effortlessly. As a comparison I think you guys should have ridden both bike equally on and off road for the benefit of the readers. No discussion regarding the chain vs shaft drive. Weight, pannier capacity and ease of us. Guys, really enjoy your video's and reviews but this was possibly not the best thought out review, although still entertaining.

I disagree, they discussed weight and all the other elements you mention are so refined and well implemented that it all comes down to preference. The fact you mention these categories probably means you already know the answers you’re looking for. Why state the obvious in a review, I want their opinions and feelings over the bikes which these guys reveal in totality.

The dirt and gravel these guys rode down could have been navigated by a Harley Road King... hardly an example of "adventure" touring.
Oh yes, one more bit of opinion, I have had numerous BMWS and I absolutely have loved them. They just need to step up on the power . The boxer needs more power to bring in more buyers.

Never seems to be enough Horse - Power after riding the same bike for about a month. Yes, I do agree that 125 HP is plenty of power but I have to admit that the more HP THE BETTER.

Guys, that's best you can do? Seriously though, these are indeed the best of the best. KTM needs more mileage under its belt for this luxo adventure segment. What about mechanics and dealer networks? Reliability? Maintenance costs? Come on guys, don't be afraid to upset people. Say what you want to say.

Great video. The comments are interesting. This is a great realistic review, both of these bikes are more likely to be taken to coffee shops, twisty roads and an occasional gravel road as opposed to off road trails. There is nothing wrong with that at all. why did they not take them into some deep rutted muddy trails? because the majority of owners arent going to use them for that. I currently own a Honda Transalp that is used for commuting, touring and holidays its a great all season all reason bike just like the BMW and KTM reviewed in this video. The most important comparisons are those they've dodged, as usual. Which of the bikes is the most reliable. Which one of these bikes do you want to be riding when you're a couple of thousand miles from home, perhaps in a country whose language you do not speak. How hard is it to get parts or to find service, perhaps, in the event of a major mechanical breakdown? How easy is the bike for the average rider to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs in the field? That's what these machines are designed for - taking you places where you've not been before and that at times means blacktop, gravel, dirt and washouts or arroyos. That's the beauty of these machines - planning routes to explore places you simply can't transit on a sport bike or a cruiser. I've been riding my 12GS since I bought it in 2006 and it's still doing everything I ask of it and it's taken me through a lot of places where I wouldn't have wanted anything else. I chose it over the KTM 990 because I could do more with the engine myself while miles away from home.
Please make a 400 lb adventure bike with a drive shaft and cruise control. That is all I need to explore the back roads.
Great review. I would only have to strongly disagree on the off road view of the 1290 SA you took. This bike is essentially a 1190 Adv wih same chassis and more power plus gismos and that bike is universally seen to be better than the standard GS off road. So how can this bike be worse than the 1200 GS adv considering it is substantially lighter? I don't think you really tried it off road.

poulan9 Same thing I was thinking. I don't see the GS hanging with the KTM in dirt or street, but maybe there is some level of comfort where it excels like a Lexus or something.

poulan9 I rode a 1290 sa, and it wasn't confidence inspiring off road, felt wishy washy because all it did was spin the tire, and the suspension was too street oriented.

poulan9 i agree, how can KTM (the offroad specialist) be more bad (than BMW) at offroad then anything else, especially the 1190 Adventure R is so much better then any BMW (according to a lot of reviews at youtube and text reviews on the internet)

poulan9 most people couldn't care less about off-road capabilities. And frankly, riding down a gravel back road isn't what I call off-road anyway. If you really wanted to, you could ride a Honda Shadow on the same back road that the GS in the video was on. I've put 130,000 miles on My R/100/GS, with it's 60 hp. It's never failed to get me there and get me back. If someone offered to trade me a brand new KTM or GS for it, I'd have to think about it. I'd hate to see that bike go, I've made mistakes like that and regretted it later. I wish I'd kept my R/75/5, I didn't really need to sell it, but the previous owner wanted it back so bad I let him have it. Well, it's late Friday afternoon, I've caught up work and think I'll take a ride. Been awhile since I've been on the GS. It's old and tired looking, but supremely comfortable. I've taken it off road a few times, when I miss a corner. The last time a hot little babe in a bikini caused me to get airborne. She shouldn't be cutting grass looking like that, it can kill an old man.

505197 Cool stories bro. My neighbour has a R100 GS and they seem to have reliability that modern BMWs do not and he kept up surprisingly well with me for the most part on my much more modern KTM 950 in the corners although not so well on the straights. I can imagine that once you have bonded with one they are difficult to part with. For me they are too dated after having more modern bikes.
I have to say both of these bikes are amazing, but I wish that BMW could have a bit more power comparing to KTM. Anyone remember "Long Way Round" with Ewan Mcgregor and Charley Boorman when they went around the world on their BMW bikes. Remember that story? Whent hey wanted to go on a KTM but KTM sead basically 'We will not give you bikes, because the bikes will make the wchole journey but you two will not be able to' so basically they were scared against bad advert. After that decision they called BMW and asked them for 2 bikes basically saying 'Ok you gives as the bikes for the journey that will be the best advert for your motorbikes and it also be a good test'. Guess what BMW sead!! 'NO PROBLEM' Next day bikes were ready waiting for them. That have nothing to do with this video, but I don't like KTM for wah they did and i was positively suprised by BMW that they feel comfortable with their bikes, this is my opinion.

+Lukasz Bat Yes I remember that and it was the WORST marketing decision that KTM ever made, which I'm sure they have regretted and kicking themselves in the ass ever since. Wonder if they fired the Manager in charge at the time for the bad decision? Anyways, that show is partly why I bought my R12GSA in 08, the other is I loved the 98 1100GS which started my love of adventure bikes. BMW all the way!

There is second side of the story that is not being well known. BMW said yes but they sent trucks with parts along Evan and Charlie. Story is that they exchanged enough parts during Long way round to build couple of new r1200gs's. Some people say that KTM, known for their bikes winning Dakkar races, would suffer reputation hit if Long way round ended up a failure.
If I had to choose between those two, I'd pick... well... Yamaha's Super Ténéré 1200. XD Excellent video, guys!

This is still a good overview comparison after all this time. Both bikes are comfortable and capable, so it really does come down to what you particularly want from an ADV platform. If we're taking sides then I'll go with the 1290, but I would never look down on a GS. They're both some of the finest bikes out there.
The GS looks better. So brutal.

One man, 5 continents, 35 countries, 68k kilometers, 270 days & the GS. Says it all I think.

Great review guys. Thank you. The first time that I see the bikes side by side. I own a 1200GSA and I have to agree that the new KTM is really nice. The only thing that, in my eyes , is missing, is a drive shaft. Yes it would add another 20-30 lbs but who cares. I load so much crap on my bike when I go somewhere, even for a weekend that I would be highly surprise to see a difference. A reliable drive shaft and really nice touches that would make the bike different. Don't be afraid of the price going higher. Bet you that none of the guys that bought the new 1200 looked at the price when they bought the bike. The saw something big and comfortable on the long run. So, KTM if you want me and other guys like me to consider crossing the street ?? you have to copy, improve and come up with something more then just a stronger motor. Frankly I would trade 20 horses for more torque at lower rpm. Overall I think this is the best bike that KTM built for touring. Great job

Virgil Lupu if a shaft is key, why doesn't a single off-road bike have one? If they break, you're done. A chain you can fix, change,... I've never had 1 issue w/ any chains on any of the 12 different bikes I've owned over the last 3 decades. Ridiculous concern. Also, the KTM probably out-performs the GS on the dirt as well since the 1190 did. Stay on your side of the street (and get left in the dust).

Is a drive shaft a key ?? in my eyes YES If a chain breaks in the middle of nowhere and you have no spare parts you are stuck either way. I have no doubt that the KTM is much better off road. It is a little bit lighter and KTM is designing theirs bike as such. SO your comment about KTM leaving me and my BMW in the dust does not concern me. I really give them that off road supremacy because my priority is not -how good is KTM or any other bike off road ???. The two bikes will be purchased mainly by, middle age guys or girls that want to travel long distance on tarmac or gravel roads. No sane person will pay $25k's include accessories and will jump in the town mud hole. I understand that you had only good experiences with chain bike and I am happy for you. As we all know most of the bikes that are going off road ,, spend half a day in mud then one hour under the power wash. None of them live to pile more then 10k miles. Either get crashed or replaced. In my recent travel across the country and to Alaska, I was lucky enough to be accompanied by a good friend of mine that was riding a Suzuki VStrom. Great Bike. We did 13000 miles in one month. If his experience with a chain bike is an example of what the people put up with a bike with a chain on long trips ?? then I will gladly pass. Regardless of the brand. Prefer to change the fluids in my drive shaft every 12k miles then having to adjust the chain every 1k mile, change the sprocket every every 10k miles on the side of the road. Remember that I am talking about a bike that weights 600 lbs plus 100lbs equipment and 220 lbs rider (plus another 150 lbs if you a have a pillion rider). That has nothing in common with that single engine Honda 250cc. I can understand some of your concern based on early 2000 new BMW drive shaft design (even do I never experience any drive shaft issues with six BMW 's and proper maintenance) but we are talking about a drive shaft generally and not specific to a brand. If you are right then every car that we see on the road should be equipped with a chain drive. It is definetelly lighter and should be more reliable ?? This was just a personnel opinion and I respect your opinion. In the long run if I ride a touring bike on dusty roads (specially full of calcium like in Alaska), I will always choose the drive shaft. Less maintenance and fewer moving parts exposed to the elements. When is about bikes ?? there is no bad brand or design. A bike is a very personel tool and it is very hard to judge. I guess the sales volume is and will be the talking factor. Based on what I see BMW with the drive shaft (reliable or not in your eyes ) , is winning so far. Again, KTM built a very nice bike (almost like a BMW) but without a drive shaft.

Wow Well done and entertaining. Great evaluation between these two bikes. The best U tube eval I've seen in this category. Fair and concise on the issues and details what about gas capacity? GPS usability integration of accessories, luggage design and capacity? You could hit those issues at the end of the ride. How well do the heated grips work on each? Center stand usage? Headlight brightness at night?

I think the biggest difference will be the dealership network. BMW has a huge network of trained dealers who have experience working on the GS across Canada and the United States. I have not yet had the dealer confidence on KTM dealers that I have walked into. I am certain that if the KTM broke up here in Canada or northern United States, it would be the first time a KTM mechanic will have ever seen one whereas the BMW dealer propable has all the parts in stock... So if I were planning to travel and needed a dealer network for support, I would go with the GS

Peter Sanderson You may have a point on the larger dealer / service network for BMW than for KTM up here, but the guys that I have talked to riding the old GS's tell stories about a new GS breaking down and still having to wait 2 weeks for the parts to come in. Either way, your left on the side of the road, then at a dealership that knows you have absolutely 0 options. Reliability is a big factor for me, and based on all that I have heard, BMW is so-so. I would love to know how KTM compares. So far, my Triumph Tiger has been 100%.

Can you tour and adventure on a duel sport? The thing is do they even have aftermarket parts for it
When I drink whiskey... I drink whiskey... and when I drink water... I drink water. When I ride dirt... I ride a dirt bike... when I ride road... I ride a road bike. And when I buy an old dirt bike for 1500... and I buy an old road bike for 1500... I laugh all the way to the bank!
Love the KTM. But for an adventure bike, I prefer to have the shaft drive maintenance free option.

STen - most underrated ADV bike in the world... however... having spent a fair amount of time on both bikes, you do get a lot for the extra $10,000.

Tim Allen That's how it usually works when one makes the Japan vs. Europe bike decision. If you have a priority on reliability - you go with the Japanese. Obviously I opted for the the European (Ducati in my case) giggle inducing performance - along with the fantastic electronics package - but the Tenere is a very solid package.

Tim Allen I've got 25k on my 15 multi, I'd buy it again without a second thought, it's had typical European bike annoyances but nothing I don't forget 2 seconds into every ride. The 18k valve adjustment interval is longer than most of the bikes I've owned... though it took some planning to avoid having it fall in the middle of a 13,000 miler I'm doing next April.

The issue is - if shaft drive fails you will have plenty of expenses as new shaft is approx $1000. It might last lifetime of a bike though and then its better value. Shaft drive reduces amount of hp that is output on rear wheel.

+Vega Rapidus The AFRICA is nothing more then a BIG-FAT OVER-WEIGHT Dirt-Bike! It has absolutely, NO-On-pavement manners. It is way to light in the front, and has no real place for extra gear for an over-night. I'm certain that this new Honda will be seen in the "Back" of Pick-Up Trucks & Trailers. To small for the road to heavy and cumbersome for the dirt. Sorry Honda nice try but the only place for this bike is in the back of pick-ups next to the WANNA BE "HARLEY (PHONY) CROWDS".

i have put over 7500 miles on rented BMW GS's. I bought a new 2017 KTM 1290 with a 145 miles, dec 2019 got a super deal. I ride it everywhere even off road. I would not do black bear pass in Colorado with it. I prefer the KTM. I do have an XR650L for the more technical off road. Just my .02
Ktm for me because they have more eager and engaging ride characteristics that enhance the sporty natural of the bike. They always seem like they are designed to be ridden hard to the limit and finish ride saying "that was crazy"! 😎

Very nice review. I think, KTM is better motorbike than BMW, It's true, BMW is "only" 1200 and KTM is "only 1290 but 100cc is nothing, KTM is very strong motorbike and Have very nice Design. So, my vote is for KTM. Sorry for my faults. English is not my natural language.
Chris Birch has a different opinion about the KTM. It is the most capable and super of road bike of the bunch. Sorry guys.
Nice nice adventure bike. One thing i like to hear in making test ride or reviewing motorcycle especially adventure bike, the rider say his/her height.
In indonesia, the price for brand new GS is about 40.000-50.000 dollar with exchange currency 1 dollar is about 14.000-15.000 rupiah

They drive of to the distance, then stop, come back to the crew, go to the next shooting spot, make a few clips, then drive to the destination, where they record a bunch of clips as well.. must be a real hard time for the camera crew and stoping/starting the bikes non stop. Or do you first have a bunch of fun with them and record the stuff later?

Sena 20S. Pretty functional, can do a lot of things, you can connect it with up to 7 or 8 other headsets (not only Senas), your phone, the GPS, the GoPro, etc. Therefore: Yes, you can record wireless when connected to your camera or another device. Two thumbs up from me for the 20S.
I am surprised that you guys didn't pick BMW! I am no fan of BMW but it seams to me that KTM has decided to cover its shortcomings by adding power. Now, I never test drove any of the bikes, BUT, I'd say the BMW is the winner. 1) it is refined which means it has better cornering, is easier to maneuver (despite its heavier weight), and a better suspension (years of design and testing electronic suspensions). 2) the bikes opposing twin engine design lowers the center of gravity, which makes for some awesome handling characteristics 3) direct shaft drive is better in my opinion (on a big bike like that). Oh and based on all the little things (kick stand design, electronic windscreen adjustment, etc) make the BMW way more convenient. Little things are important and BMW does it better because of their experience. Lastly, power doesn't solve everything! Off road, more power = wheel spin and loss of control. The key off-road is controlled power and low end torque, which the BMW does better. Ironically, the KTM bike is more road oriented because it has so much power! Adventure bikes are not purchased for their speed they are purchased for their comfort, practicality, and versatility. The BMW does all of that better!
You can purchase a 1290 Super Adventure S for around 15,000 new. You do not get deals with BMWs. The 2020 GS is around $24,000, without the side cases. I went with the KTM. It's the bomb. It handles great, and in my opinion the greatest motor around. The LC8 twin engine is why you buy this bike. It's a pleasure and a pure joy to ride!!

As an owner of a KTM 1190 I can honestly say it's the best bike I've ever owned. It does everything well. Whether I'm doing over 150 on the pavement, or chugging along over logs the thing is a beast. Wheelies I'm 3rd gear at 70 mph and an amazing off-road suspension and performance setting, in my eyes just can't be beat. However, id love to try a 1200 gs if anyone wants to change my mind
it's a shame to call these "tanks" Adventure motorcycles. They are both way to heavy for offroad riding and are way to complicated for a trip to some place without a dealer (try to find someone that fix your cardan shaft drive or your Keihin fuel injection on the road of bones) and their are way to expensive.

Why is everyone so obsessed about the road of bones......NO ONE IS GOING THERE! Adventure is not equal to heavy offroading. There are people riding all around the world on a 2-stroke scooter.

not talkin bout that road fool i am talkin about the 20,000 mile road trip from london to new york eastern route including russia infamous road of bones there is a whole filmed series of it called the long way round look it up before tellin me to grow up i know my facts and there is recorded proof in the series of ktm spokespeople stating the trip cannot be done and bmw said yes it can and gave the equipment to them series is on hulu and maybe netflix
Next time test all aspects of both bikes and give us a review! To be honest, I'm exactly where I was before I wasted the last 10 minutes! The 1290 has the same frame as the 1190 and we know how well that bike is off road!
Hi, I'm thinking of changing bike, and I'm in doubt between Ktm 1190 BMW R1200GS Adventure R and Adventure. What do you recommend? I wonder if BMW is good for off-road? I run on average about 18,000 miles per year, and of these 18,000 miles, I run 2000 miles on dirt road.

Agree with poulan9, there must be some kind of gag order on behalf of KTM to NEVER take this bike off road. I find it hard to believe that a bike 40lbs lighter than a GSA would be less dirt-worthy WITHOUT EVER EVEN BEEN TAKEN OFF ROAD. Both great bikes though.

XL Adventure Motorcycle Rider I'll add that neither had knobby tires either.
The stock GS/GSA is an amazing bike i've sat on both but they are REALLY TALL! I am not short by any means, (32" inseam) but not being able to flat foot the bike makes riding it very dangerous. BMW does offer a factory lowered option for the front shock, sitting on the lowered GS I was able to comfortably flat foot it. I might even be able to say the same for the GSA but i've not been able to find a lowered GSA yet. KTM Super, also a tall bike but not quite as tall as the BMW GS/GSA, I am able to almost comfortably flat foot it. A mild adjustment to the stock suspension would probably suffice for the KTM for those that are tall (yet not quite tall enough in the saddle), but feeling a little unsure about standing one up. At this very moment the KTM's are selling for up to 5k off the list price which beats the GS easily in value. Even the KTM SA is selling for almost 4k off the 20k list price. BMW rarely ever has any of their high end bikes on sale, certainly not for the prices that KTM is offering right now.

E-Nonymouse : typical BMW.....make a high suspension bike with low suspension as a paid option so any idiot can ride it....what the hell do you do with a lowered "high suspension" bike??? Just buy a damn road bike bunch of posers!! What use is an adventure bike without ground clearance? Shows exactly the manager type who buys the GS.
The KTM is flawed. It has a Chain final drive. The single most valid reason for my choice - BMW R1200GS L/C Adventure

Myself and many of my friends have never had any issues with any of the issues you chose to believe. I'm sure one day. if you work hard. you could own your own BMW and rid your envy. silly sausage.

+Nigel Collinson i own the super adventure so no thank you, money to spare. I owned more than 30 bikes in 20 years, including 5 bmw's which gave me nothing but trouble including the shaft drive. Bloke in pub? I have friends i ride with that own beemers and they talked me out of a new bmw. I also promised myself never to buy one again but still came very close. I do like the new gs and the lc engine a lot, just don' t trust it anymore....
I thought this was to be a serious comparison of these two models. I just test drove a 2009 and a 2011 GS and I was not impressed. Too expensive for what you ultimately get. Next I want to test BMW's F800GS and KTM's 1190 Adventure R
18 V-Strom 1000XT for half the price. Only 511 pounds stock (and easily into the 400-pound range with a few simple mods).
