BMW R1200C - A NEW CRUISER with NEW EXHAUST SOUND!

The second & final installment in the "NEW CRUISER" story!
Taking delivery of the R1200C from Redline Exhausts, after Terry demonstrates the results of his surgery on the Muffler..... FANTASTIC!
Video concludes with a montage of "before" & "after" footage of the R1200C's exhaust sound.
HAD TO RE-EDIT & RE-UPLOAD THIS VIDEO AFTER THE SOUNDTRACK ON THE ORIGINAL WAS MUTED FOR SOME LAME REASON OF SIGNIFICANCE TO THE SQUARES!
Geez, I look like a tub of lard in this video....I lost 40kg since it was filmed! Woo-hoo!!!

    Personally I don't care about the sound too much. I ride a BMW 1200 GSa and to mee it's just about the riding itself. However when I saw that big smile on your face as the motor started up I felt so happy for you! I can see it means a lot to you and each to his own! Driving a motorcycle is a wonderful thing wether you do if for one thing or another. All the best to you Brother!

    Thanks Brother!.... I can see your point of view and have friends that share a similar perspective, but they ride sports bikes or adventure bikes like your GS. The sound of the machine tends to be more integral & important to the cruiser bike experience, as it's a slower and more laid back phenomenon, where you can enjoy the sound of the bike bouncing off canyon walls and echoing through the scenery, and the bikes themselves are a lot about style & styling, and the sound of the bike becomes a part of that aspect. Every cruiser bike rider understands this, but my friends who've never ridden one think it's all a load of toss! 🤣 As you said though, it's each to his own, and riding motorcycles is a wonderful thing no matter what floats your boat!...or bike! 😂 I've ridden a few 1200GS's belonging to friends and they're a great machine. Very capable. You can circumnavigate the globe on those things....plenty have. Thanks for your kind words and keep it shiny-side-up! Cheers, Brother.

    Cheers, Jaycob! Nice of you to say so, but I can't take all the credit!....the hard work was done by Mr.Terry Merritt @ Redline Exhausts here in Adelaide. He's an absolute master with this sort of work, and all kinds of fabrication. And a real nice guy, also. More than a few R1200C owners have contacted him since they saw my videos, wanting the same for their bikes! Your R100R was a real nice bike, too. I've ridden one of those some time ago, and thought highly of it. Maybe now you know the potential of how good an R1200C can sound, you might be tempted to get one! LOL. Anyway, all the best, Brother. :-)

    Hey Anthony. Cheers for your message. I'm assuming you're referring to the bike and it's improved sound? There are plenty of BMW R1200C's for sale in the Good Ol' U.S. of A., and as a 2nd hand buy for a unique Cruiser motorcycle with German origins & engineering, they represent pretty good value at the modest investment required to get your mitts on one! So the simple answer to your statement would be, you CAN have one in the States. Get to it, Brother. Live To Ride! 👍🤘😎

    Hey Buddy. Glad you dig the look of the bike, and thanks for saying so. Regarding genuine BMW handlebars manufactured for the R1200C/R850C Cruiser Motorcycles, there were three options available......the "Police", "Avantgarde", and "Wide" handlebars. The BMW "C" Model Cruiser Motorcycles (R1200C/R850C) were built between 1997-2004. The original and most numerous variant was the R1200C/R850C "Classic" Model manufactured continuously over the entire 7 year production run from 1997-'04. The standard, default handlebar fitted to the "Classic" Model was the tall, "Ape-Hanger" style unit called the "Police" Handlebar. Strange, as the BMW "C" Model Cruiser Bikes were never used by law enforcement or Police Departments anywhere, to my knowledge. My theory is that the styling was reminiscent of the Police-spec Harleys favoured by U.S. Police Departments. These are the 'bars fitted to my Black R1200C Classic and Canyon Red R850C Classic, featured in my other videos. In 2000, a limited edition/production variant of the "C" Model "Classic" was introduced, called the R1200C/R850C "Avantgarde" Model, which was a subtle styling package limited to some mild cosmetic differences, like an overall darker colour theme, including dark paint over previously chromed or polished surfaces. The most notable change being to the lower, wider bars, unsurprisingly named the "Avantgarde" handlebar, which subsequently became available as an option on the other "C" Models, as seen fitted to my Steele Blue R1200C "Classic" featured in this video. In 2001, another special edition/limited production cosmetic variant was released again, called R1200C/R850C "Phoenix" Model in the U.S. market, and the "Independent" Model in the rest of the world....Seven billion, six hundred & sixty-nine million folks of every kind spread across the globe, representing every possible demographic, individual circumstance, country & market, were totally kool & satisfied with the R1200C "Independent" Model. Apparently, the 331 million Americans representing just 4.25% of the world's population, and, just ONE country & market exclusively, justified a market-specific version of this "C" Model, otherwise identical to the "Independent", purely because they prefer the name "Phoenix"! Presumably, any other country or market enquiring when they could expect a version named just for them, would have been met with icy, Teutonic stares, and a take-it-or-leave-it option on the "Independent" Model. Make of that what you will. Anyway,....the "Independent" featured single seat (passenger seat and foot pegs optional), two-tone paint, new aluminium wheels, speedster style wind-shield, fog lamps, clear indicator lenses, and a BMW rondel on a chromed alternator cover. Oddly, it was also fitted standard with the "Avantgarde" handlebar, despite a third handlebar being released simultaneously, which, unlike the lower "Avantgarde" bars that curve outward and backward toward the rider, looked a little like the taller, straight-across, "Drag-style" 'bars seen on competition bikes built for Drag Racing, or, street bikes favouring that aesthetic style. Known paradoxically as the "Wide" handlebar, it's actually a little narrower than the "Avantgarde", and midway in height between that, and the tallest "Police" handlebar, with a "T-piece" style cross-brace across the 'bars. It was immediately available as an option on the entire "C" Model Cruiser range. I'll include a link to a BMW Motorrad Webpage where you can see all three types of 'bars and related hardware as you scroll down...... www.bike-parts-bmw.com/bmw-motorcycle/R%201200/1996/R_1200_C_97_-0424_0434_/Steering/Handlebar-Avantgarde/5/32_1157/32/516970424 Sorry about the long reply, but hope it covers the subject to your satisfaction. Cheers buddy. Rock On. Live To Ride. Be kool like the Fonz. 👍👊👉😎

    Hey, sounds really good! It's one thing BMW didn't get right with this bike, 1200cc has a great potential though. What kind of exhaust is that?

    Hey Bart. Thanks for the compliment buddy! Glad you like it. Yeah, they sound like a sewing machine as they come from the factory....it's amazing how they come alive and sound really tough with the right exhaust. Changes the whole character of the machine. The exhaust on mine is the original unit that's been modified by the gentleman in the video. He's done both my R1200C's and they sound fantastic!

    Tom FlaTTop It really does change the character of the machine! Sound is a part of riding experience, especially if you're into choppers. I actually think this sound for stock 1200c might be a reason why they didn't get so popular. Still a great motorcycle. Cheers

    Unfortunately, this mod can cause your pipes to discolor. Due to the double sleeve construction of your exhaust pipes. Sounds great, but get ready for dulling or bluing of your pipes.

  • @TomFlaTTop_BMW

    @TomFlaTTop_BMW

    Hey Gabriel. You're right about the double sleeve construction. But incorrect about the dulling or bluing. Both my R1200C's have had their exhausts modified like this for over 2 years. I do a lot of miles on both bikes every year, like 20-30,000kms on average, and I've NEVER had any dulling or discolouration on the mufflers. Not even a hint of it. I'm no expert in exhaust engineering, but having worked as a BMW (Car) Mechanic all my life, as well as a restorer/collector of BMW Cars & Motorcycles, I'm not totally ignorant on the subject, and as an educated guess, it seems like this kind of modification would have the opposite effect, in that the reduced internal restrictions and subsequent increase in volume & velocity in the gas flow through the system would reduce the metal temperature responsible for those effects. Whether my reasoning is right or wrong, the end result stands that these modifications have had absolutely no negative effect on the finish of the system. Interestingly, my R850C has the entire original muffler system completely replaced by a beautifully made custom built system that also has a cross pipe in the original position allowing the original mounting points to be utilised and O2 sensor position to be retained, while sounding even better than the modified OEM units on my 1200's. The R850C's custom system is a SINGLE WALL design, and while it has a beautiful finish, IT does suffer from a small, roughly 15cm patch of dulling & discolouration limited to the location at which the muffler system joins the header pipes on each side. It polishes out very easily in a few minutes and takes over a month of regular riding at least a few times a week before it noticeably returns, so I wouldn't consider it an issue. But the double wall system of the modified OEM units on my 1200's has no such issues EVER. So my long term experience with these bikes and these modifications on their original exhaust systems doesn't offer any evidence to verify your conclusions. But thanks for taking an interest anyway! Rock On. Live To Ride. Be kool like the Fonz. 👍👉👊😎

    Hi Emmanuel... I've made a number of video's on the subject of my two BMW R1200C's having their exhausts liberated by Mr.Terry Merritt. As you might imagine, I've had more than a few enquiries identical to yours, which I've already answered numerous times to the best of my ability in the comments section under those videos. To avoid repeating myself constantly, I would ask you to look there for a reply to your query. Cheers.
