    The Stelvio has acquired so much fame as Italy's highest paved pass that it has become like an amusement park. Bicyclists add it to their palmarès, summer skiers take to the pass's glaciers, Germans come down to get warm and Italians go up to cool off and there are hikers everywhere. But you handled it with patience and skill. As a former bicyclist, I've ridden all three sides of the pass and have watched your videos doing the same. Your approach over Umbrail was a lot more tranquil without the hordes of people and the views from your descent into Bormio were majestic. This is a very special place in the Alps...I really have appreciated seeing it from your moto.

    I did the Stelvio from the Umbrial, Swiss side, late September 2016. Went down to Bormio and then back up and over and on towards the Splugen back into Switzerland. I have to say I absolutely loved it in every way. The scenery, the challenge, the sausage butty at the top! Yes the traffic can be hard work at times but I couldn't find anything at all to complain about. I did ten days from England on my Triumph Tiger 800. Would love to do it all again on something like the BMW one day with my partner if she could sit on the back for a few weeks?! Great video and riding. Thanks for sharing

    Did the Stelvio with my K1600GTL in 2015 in dreadful weather (we were close to 0 degrees and it was raining and snowing at the same time). Add to that the cyclers who were all over the place (I mean in other people's way) and an historic car event of the Mille Miglia type and you can guess what a struggle it was to get to the top. I made without a scratch or even a lucky escape. This is exactly the kind of moutain road shaped to make you drop your bike (strong gradients, short bends and heavy traffic). If I ever do the Stelvio again, I'll do it from the South (much easier to the top) and definitely on a week day, in the early morning and on a sunny day. Otherwise, this road is just a big mess offering no fun when you're riding a bike... Probably going to the Balkans next summer, quite a long journey coming from Belgium, but I think it's worth it, Montenegro in particular.

    I had the exact same experience several years ago. A lot of struggle in a dreadful weather for not much satisfaction. It was an exercise in planning, focus and patience (plus some luck).

    Thanks for the video. It helped with taking notes for next summer's next ride up. It looks like you were there in Aug. or maybe late July. That traffic was the s***s! And the red helmet guy, fast in the straights (sorta) and ready to drop in the turns. Too lame for words... A few tips for the next time you go: 1) keep the revs up!!! anything below 3K and the motor has no guts. Extended time in the 3-4.5K range isn't going to hurt the motor and it will give you the torque to take you around the corner. You turned in much too soon, which sent you to the median strip (and over it at least once) and to the wall on the other side. Delay the turn and lean /out/ of the turn to get the bike over /further/. At 15-25 k/h you want to use more of the side of the tread to carry the bike around. Leaning into the turns, as you did, made turning harder. Drop down to second or first (high revs are your friend!!) /before/ you get to the turn and motor around it, add throttle coming out of the turn. It'll feel like you're on rails when it comes together. Quickshifter is nice on normal roads but, IMHO, a dead loss on roads like Stelvio. OK, shifting up, once out of the turns, is nice, but downshifts force the bike to shut the throttle just enough to make the shift. And that makes a hash of setting up the frame and suspension for the turn. More than once it very briefly skidded the rear wheel during my test ride with quickshift. No thanks!! My avatar shows me on an RT coming up to turn #20. BTDT - got the hat. LOL

    +Richard Emerson Hey thanks for the tips it's always good to get some advice. As for the time I was there in early September and unfortunately on the weekend hence the traffic. As the quickshifter goes I kinda got to like it. You just have to do some miles and it grows on you 😁😁😁 All the best on your trip. And stay tuned as the rest of the videos are coming soon

  • @ababbit7461
    @ababbit74615 жыл бұрын

    This type of uphill, reduced radius tight corner riding shows why you want a bike with torque over horsepower. The boxer engine is made for that type of riding. Also V-Twins are great for that type of riding, like the Moto Guzzi in the pull out near the top. Good ride, but too many bicyclist for it to be enjoyable. I like roads less traveled.
