Vanos filter? Huh? That piece is there to keep the oil filter from collapsing. It’s openings are so big it wouldn’t filter out a handful of rocks. Also, it’s supposed to be snapped into the cap first.

Hi Doc, the center portion that the filter medium is held by is suppose to be attached to the cap-not separate like on your auto. Then when you remove the cap, the little center oring is lifted up and allows the passage to open, allowing the filter housing oil to drain down to the oil sump.

Hi BMW Doctor, Might I suggest as a fellow BMW colleague, Always clip the middle part of the Oil cap into the oil cap and then insert the filter and afterwards screw it into place. If it is not clipped into the cap ive seen it cause premature wear on both the filter and the filter housing gaskets since I believe it is affecting the oil pressure. Note: I have not tested if it actually affects the oil pressure but it is definitely better to have the oil cap in one piece as it is originally. Takes two seconds to realign and clip back. A little extra prevention for future reference. This applies to all engines that use this kind of cap. Still some great content and clear explanations for all those that have no experience in the field.

Yes mate I’m fully aware of that and I usually clip it back on to the cap BUT , it does not hold together as soon as I spin the cap it’s back off again so there is no point even trying to clip it back on I will be getting a new one next time from bmw as it needs to be replaced But I’m fully aware that it needs to clip on only if it would hold in place

Daaamn a shop told me my filter cap was broken, almost bought a new one. Thankfully I saw your video.

No problem mate this is why I done this video and will keep mentioning this so people are aware of this as this is a big big big problem everywhere and garages don’t even realise there self How big of a thing that filter is !!!

Nice video. The Mann filter comes with 3 gaskets or O rings. I change them all out with every oil change. The big one on the filter housing , the little one inside the filter , and the copper crush gasket for the drain bolt. No reason not to.

When I did my first oil change on my previous 330i N52 that exact part was missing. It ran much much better after that. I also think it will not filter all the oil as it will go around it at the top. Good video/tip!

@@BMWDoctor just bought my e90 in february with 17,000kms. only issue was the idle and tick which is gone now that i did the proper oil change like you showed ;) going to update the modules like you showed in other videos too Doc cheers

Another great vid mate 👌 I think you should do a video on resealing the oil pan instead of changing the gasket 😬 I know you said you can do it without dropping the sub frame and everything but I can guarantee you a vid on doing the sump would go wild 💪

I've been using Castrol Full Synthetic for my N52. Works great. Liqui-Moly also does well in the N52.

Hello. I’ve got a e63 630 with n52 engine. I have no way of checking oil level. No dipstick as you know. But there is no option in the idrive and no option on the BC stalk. Could this be a faulty oil sensor do you think? It’s also had a new battery which could also be related? Thanks

Just bought a used 325i and had vanos codes, realised the cap is missing that vanos bit. Car drives fine just unstable idling. Is it dangerous to drive it? I've ordered a new cap but in the meantime. Engine seems fine

Ello, how did it happen that you have protection for the polans here?

My mechanic forgot to put the whole centre part in my oil filter during my recent oil change. My n52 started showing vanos codes and then checked the oil filter and got shocked by seeing just oil filter in there. Now he put everything back along new filter. So my question is that is there any damage caused to engine during this interval? Just ran about 5-700 km

I have a 2007 BMW X3 has a n52 engine when I go over 80 miles per hour I hear a rumbling sound vibration from the rear of the car what can you think it might be

It seems like it might be easier just to fill the oil from the oil filter housing as it's closer to the front of the car and you probably wouldn't need a funnel. Would this be a bad idea?

Why bypass the filter element?

Hi, can you explain why not to use 5W-30? My N52 is ticking for 60sec after cold start and i use 5W-40. Someone recomended to use 5w-30 and ticking from HVA will be gone away. Thanks

My 2011 328iX E90 runs smooth as silk with Castrol 03101 EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil.

Good Basic maintenance . Since I don't drive many miles I look at it this way filter and oil is cheap. Last oil change was 1k on it since April , next change will be in April again. 😊

mate to be honest I dont rate liqui moly products much if im honest I only trust forte but then I was using it in the trade

If you ask me, the N53 is actually better than N52. If the N53 is properly maintained that is. The squashing of N52 oil filters tells you that N52 is a weird engine (seems like there is way too much pressure inside that engine going on). Does the N53 do the same with the oil filters? It squashes them as well?

I did oil pan gasket and put gasket maker all around on both sides of the oil pan gasket and no more leaks gasket alone will fail.

Should I ise 5w30 or 5w40 on my n53?

What can cause driving without this plastic part in filter? My mehanics drop this part in garbage and i drive car about 7000kmh without this part,and car start to noising like diesels car and lost of power. I change both vanos on camshaft (not solenoids), and valve rubbers and camshaft orings. But car is still loss of power and vanos when i start the car turn around -40 degress. Can somebody tell me more about what can damaged others part on engine, or what you think is problem?

Nice video! There are a few things I don't understand. First, why not replace the O-rings since they come with the new oil filter? Might as well change those too. Second, if the O-rings were replaced recently, why not change oil and filter as well so it's not overdue?

rghant your welcome mate listen to me bro get RID of the guy who’s doing your servicing reason he’s telling you this as it’s a intense job gearbox has to be dropped to do this job which means big big hours spent for a tiny little deal which then means big big money for them to charge you and then guess what when they put your gearbox back it will then have more problems and then leak again anyway it’s a common issue mine has been leaking since 100k and guess what it still leaks and I have no issues mate don’t even worry about it every n52 in the country will have it leaking and people don’t even notice so do not care about what they tell you mate

Just type in your registration it will come up

"Catastrophic" if you drop the bolt into the drain pan???? I've done it a couple times. Takes seconds to get it out. Just use a plastic grocery bag as a glove and get it out.

Andy Cenatus amsoil does not have BMW approval, but the company says their european formula oil is recommended for all european cars, including BMW. I’ve never used amsoil, but I’ve used Redline 5w30 (which did not have BMW approval then, but many people on BMW forums swear by it) before, and the car DOES NOT like it. It kept throwing the oil level sensor error code. You can clear it, but it will come back. Then I changed to a BMW LL01 approved oil for the next oil change, and the error code disappeared completely. I’d just stick with BMW LL01 or LL04 oil.

It’s better for high mileage BMW’s anyone would tell you that the reason for this is simple : as you know bmw piston rings don’t seal well over the lifetime that is due to heat from these engines running very very hot for emissions purposes and what happens as the years get on the seals begin to weaken and gaskets causing leaks you can fix all of them BUT they will spring open once again , 5w30 for high mileage cars will burn off to quick and also it doesn’t give the engine full protection considering the mileage 5w30 is for quick warm ups including low mileage cars but as the years go on mileage goes up and these cars tend to wear with the internals so it’s better to use 5w40 on a older car and give it the correct oil for the mileage any cars under 100k I wouldn’t reccomend using but for my purposes I have used it since day one and have had no issues only better issues then it had before I got it
