Like you stated, alternating ABS warning lights are a good indicator of a battery that nearing the end of its service life. I usually just ride about a mile then pull over and restart the bike without any further issues.

Brilliant! Thank you so much! I was having a intermittent issue with the abs lights. The battery is old and my trickle charger is saying its now weak, so this all makes sense. Hopefully a new battery will sort it. Cheers again from the UK. 👍

I found a good solution someone else suggested. I have an extra relay to turn on the ABS system which is activated from voltage from the alternator.. so the ABS only comes alive once the alternator is producing power (which will be after any voltage drop caused by the starter motor)... has worked fine for 7 years now... as for running diagnostics, there is a wire under the seat you can connect a small LED light to, that will give a code, 1 thru 7 flashes if I remember to tell you what the fault is.. it will be on the Internet..

It is also possible to modify the wiring, I did see a video about this. I have this problem only in winter when the battery (which is brand new) has less power. I normally ride till the engine is warm, stop, turn it off and start it again. Usually that works well also.

Great vid, thanks. On my side, with an ABS II, even if the lower bulb has been tested OK, it never turns on. Upper light is flashing normally, brakes were flushed, lines were changed, tail lamp is good, PC680 is new, wheel sensors are OK and brake switches are doing their usual click. Don't know where to look anymore. Any idea?

That is a cool trick and logical . I can see how this works in my head . I understand it completely and clearly . I thought that BMW did not recomend jump starting their shaft drive bikes . They said it could damage the diff ring gear . This is what a BMW shop told me !!!!!!! Good shop or bad shop I dont know .

There is also a static method to reset the ABS fault. It requires you to insert a jumper and holding the ABS switch down. There is a sequence but i cant remember the sequence. It was on the K1 site a few years ago.

In my experience on my 1997 K1100LT, replacing the battery has always solved the problem. But the jump start trick is handy if you really want ABS functional until you get the battery. I just rode w/o it cuz hey, I'm old school. 😁

Hey partner I know this is an old video. I am having this exact problem with the abs failing to stop blinking when the bike is cold. I know I have a good lithium battery and when the bike is in hot weather or after it is warmed up I can turn the bike off and back on and it works properly. Is there a bad sensor or something if this is happening when the bike is cold? Thanks love the videos. 2001 bmw 1150 gs.

Kevin, I’m having the brake light stay on even w the 2 switches disconnected. It’s a 2002 r1150rtp. Any ideas?

Can this situation still happen with a new battery? I've been told that sometimes the starter is at fault drawing more power when the bike goes through it's starting sequence and the ABS doesn't initiate. I've reset my ABS numerous times but doesn't work as you hear it start to, then the flashing lights come back on. You can still first hear the telltale chirp (as I call it) then nothing. Is it possible my modulator is toast? My bike is a 2000 RT. Thanks!

I have an issue with my 2007 R1200 GS, when I apply the front brakes the rear brake instantly locks(ABS). I have tried deactivating the ABS but as soon as I touch ether brakes front or rear, the rear locks. Would you know how to fix this?

Just hold down your abs switch until your lights come on.

Mate i have the same issue on a Bmw R1200s 2007 model. Do you believe that its the same problem? And it's not come up always, sometimes the abs light is standard on

It's easy to take out the abs. Should do new brake lines if needed. Tape over light or remove the fuse.

What is the next step if that does not solve the issue? I kill the engine at 30 mph, then key back on, and the lights never flash simultaneously. The sensors are clean of debris. How do I test the rest of the ABS system on my 1998 R1200 c?

Would this work on a K1200?

I have a 2004 RT. Same alternate flashing warning and brake failure. If I turn off the ignition, then restart.... without the bump start, the flashing goes away. The flashing starts while I am driving, not after starting. Not sure what my problem is, but pretty irritating. changed pads, fluid and even replaced a rear rotor that was out of spec, but still does this about every 10th time I ride.

Get a new battery. Low voltage is sometimes the issue.

On my 1150adv the abs lights are always on. Cannot use the diagnostics as it doesn’t recognise the key is on. Brakes are not good.

What bike was this done on?

My brake failure light turns on and off. Last time it stood on. Then turns off. 2011 r1200rt

Wish you would identify the bike used here or especially the version of ABS you were using for the demo, Assuming it was ABS2, just the fact that the lights switched from flashing together to alternating DURING the start of the motor already indicates that it was low voltage. There are no other ABS faults that get triggered at that time.

I just pushed the bike past 5kmh with ignition on. Tha ABS initialized so I knew my battery was faulty. New battery and problems went away
