BMW M5 E34 review - see why they don't make them like they used to!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On a recent launch of the latest BMW M5, I had the opportunity to drive one of its predecessors: the E34 M5. A glorious straight-six engine, a simple rear wheel drive chassis, and Eighties-tastic styling. Join me for the test drive of an icon.

    Zeronality please explain

  • @Heretic_Wolf

    @Heretic_Wolf

    4 жыл бұрын

    Zeronality Zeronality ok, I partly agree and I partly disagree; My first car was an E34 535i, (used of course, picked it up with 78k mi.) By the time I got rid of it (like an idiot) i had put 120k mi. During that time I went thru 2 sets of tires, one transmission, two sets of shocks, front and back, a radiator, a water pump, an oil pan gasket, a headlight and a fender. Mind you, some of these repairs were not because of the built quality of the car but because my youth and inexperience at the time. Meanwhile my brother had a 325i from 1982-83 I believe, and he only put fuel and air on the tires and that thing lasted him almost 320,000mi. After that i bought a brand new camry ( base, manual) and that was the most dependable and boring car I’ve had. From there on I’ve had mazdas, nissans, more Toyota, MB, cadillacs, VW and even Hyundais and I must say the worst I had was a brand new Mazda 3 which was a base model; tranny went out at 7k mi, computer failed twice and rear axle had to be replaced as well (very little moving parts in this car) plain garbage. So I believe it really depends on the class of the car, manufacturer and treatment, few moving parts do not mean least trouble if the manufacturer’s quality is garbage. Precise engineering could be a 50-50 thing, my S-class has asked me for nothing but fuel since new, in contrast my Escalade has taken me to the dealer more than my old e34 did, and it was purchased new as well. :( :(

    I wish I could post a photo of my car. They didn't make an M5 for the US in 1995. Notice his computer had german labels on the buttons. I had the 1995 540i Sport. 300 bhp V8 mated tro a SIX spped Getrag gearbox. It was arguably a better drive, more civil gearbox, smooth V8 power. It had most of the features of the M5 for that year. Available staggered 17x8 + 17x9 wheels, 12-way adjustable heated Recaro bucket seats, No cup holders up front. No drinks in a drivers car. Perfect balance, improved suspension and brakes, it was a dream to drive and a fantasy to own. It's gone now, but not after being the car I had owned the longest (7 years) and loved the most. I'm so glad I took the time to document my love affair with hundreds of photos from various shows and meets and cruise nights. If you had met her, you would have loved her, too.

    They don't make them like they used to because the car buyer has changed! Most car companies now are struggling and want volume sales and new markets in upcoming developing economies. At the expense of sounding elitist and a snob I will say that these cars were meant for a certain class of people, car makers themselves said it in their ad campaigns. Mercedes went to lengths to say their cars are not for everyone. Car manufacturing has undergone a sea change in the past 20 years dictated by market forces, parts are being sourced by multiple manufacturers from the same suppliers. There have been collaborations and mergers unthinkable before. If 25 years ago I was told that a Nissan is having a Renault engine I would have said "good joke", or that Seat, Skoda and VW cars are built in the same factory!! The only thing permanent is change!

    They actually have them in Left Hand drive for the UK. I've met one recently, when delivering a parcel to a man in a residential house. When I was walking to the door, I'm looking at it, looked through the window to make sure it's a proper M5 and then I saw a stick shift 6 speed - I was sure. Then an old man, around 70 years old opened the door. I appreciated the car, we chatted for a few minutes, he said he owned the beauty for around 27 years now, I believe he bought it from new. Had around 200k miles on it, never broken down. It was incredible, dark blue color with white leather interior. E34, mhh. I loved, though for my younger generation, I'm looking to achieve an E39 M5 :)

    @@stackzbeats9344 maybe to you, but at least we have taste ;). Seriously though, the modern mega-grilled BMWs are a styling disaster, aimed at the Chinese and American markets, where taste doesn't matter.

    @@Audidude I think that the new styling is globally hated. Even the americans seem to despise the thug like looks of the new BMWs.

    I had an E34 525tds Back in the late 90's. The engine was a bit to weak for that size of a car, but had no issues for years until the head gasket blew at 300.000km. But I loved the car, great design, great interior. Really a car I miss today

    Lovely cars, i still have mine after years this month and every thing still works like in this video including those sensitive electric blinds, still feels solid as well. To be honest she has been very reliable, mine is same colour but last year of production. Sweet cars and its all about that engine, very visceral fine piece of Art. Might i add, she gives me more fun than my much newer 911.
