Thanks to RS Symons for lending us the Model 3: @RSEV
Is the new BMW i4 better than the Tesla Model 3? Well, we’re here to find out!
We all know that Tesla is easily the market leader when it comes to EVs, so Mat’s going to put these two cars through their paces to see which is the must-have everyday EV of 2022.
Starting with the stats, we’ve got our hands on the range-topping i4 M50, which comes equipped with two electric motors to deliver 540hp. It’s also packing an 81kWh battery pack, and looking at recent performance, it’s good for a real-world range of 186 miles.
Next up we have the range-topping Tesla Model 3 Performance. It’s also equipped with two electric motors, but it's down on power compared to the BMW, delivering 480hp. It comes packing a smaller 77kWh battery pack, too, but its real-world range is much more impressive - 265 miles!
Once you step inside, both these cars come with equally impressive interiors. As with any Tesla, it’s a super minimal interior dominated with a massive infotainment screen on the dash. The BMW also comes equipped with a big screen, although it’s nowhere near what you'll find hogging the dash in the Tesla!
So what do you think - is the i4 the must-have EV? Or would you still pick the Tesla? There’s only one way to find out for sure - stick with Mat for this all-new head-to-head!

Matt seemed extra critical of the BMW here. For example, Why is the Hans Zimmer noise in the BMW silly and pointless but the fart sounds in the Tesla are cool? What's so terrible about the recharging cover? I don't mind the long hood at all, seeing a powerful-looking hood In front of you feels good in a sporty car. Only problem I have is they should have use it for storage. Some of the features Matt mentioned on the Tesla as if they're exclusive are also in the BMW like the dashcam that records footage. I much prefer the infotainment layout in the BMW. And finally, stop guessing the range on the cars. Drive them and find out or don't bother commenting on it.

Just cutouts for where they would be on the ICE car which it's based on. What's so wrong about it having a fake grill? Would you rather there be a real grill on an electric car? I've been driving BMWs all my life and never thought I would be driving an EV until August '21 when I wife took delivery of her Model 3 Long Range. I wasn't a believer until I drove it's simply a great driver's car with enormous performance even with the non-performance version. Fantastic handling, great visibility from the cockpit, practicality, enormous range, loads and loads of techs that are constantly evolving from OTA software updates. To me the Tesla is just a better overall EV. I like her M3 so much I got myself a month-old Model Y. Just recently added the Acceleration Boost software update and it's a rocketship disguised as a family SUV/Crossover. Once you go EV, especially Tesla, there's no going back. Thanks Mats for a fantastic review.

The reason you're getting so much slip in the m50 is because it's cold out and you have the high performance wheel package on the car... aka high performance summer tires. They effectively turn to plastic in cold weather. I imagine that would also have a nasty impact on handling as well. If you wanted to get better traction in colder weather, namely during your 0-60 run, you'd need an all season or winter tire with a tire compound that stays softer in colder temps.

  • @TheDanishSpaceman

The suspension set up in the Model 3 Performance is quite poor, didn't realised it until I was rear passenger in one. Normally when driving in the driver's seat it's already a bit underdamped with far too stiff anti roll bars to try to mitigate the bodyroll, which is the wrong way as stiffer dampers would simply solve that without resorting to using stiff anti rollbars. This issue really exacerbates itself when I was sitting in the back feeling car sick, cause the dampers can't keep up with the fast steering ratio.

The test based the range efficiency only on the miles covered so far by each car. Problem is we don't know how each car was driven, i.e. hard acceleration, motorway driving etc and over what distances. The fair way to compare their ranges is to drive the two cars over the same distance, route and conditions.

Also pro tip, regarding hands on the steering wheel detection, I blip the volume rocker up and down one tick rather than jerking the steering wheel back-and-forth. I found this way better. I have owned the model three performance for a couple of years and just love it. Tight handling on twisty roads combined with 0 to 60 of 3.1 seconds make it a fantastic car to drive. Regardless of how far each car can actually go on a single charge once you go beyond that range the Tesla is the car to have, hands down, no contest. Ionity might be a joint charging network with BMW, VAG, Ford, Mercedes, Hyundai but they only have 15 locations in the UK. Along the west coast M1/M6 corridor there isn't a charger between Milton Keynes and Gretna Green making London to the Lake District and back impossible using only the Ionity network.

I have a 4 year old 80,000 km Model 3 performance on 18 inch wheels and Pirelli 4S. Most of its life is spent on autosteer on motorways but, rarely, I have a trip on an empty twisty drivers' road. The M3P is a real point to point weapon . Not brilliant on a track near the limit, but great on roads. It's extremely comfortable, very quiet, has a low centre of gravity, excellent traction and good handling. The lift-off regen braking is very well calibrated and tucks the nose in going into bends. The traction and torque coming out of bends is superb. Like most electric cars it excels going up hills. Rarely get the opportunity but this is a very good driver's car.

22:05 The M3P is definitely faster than the i4 M50 from a standing start at traffic lights. This is probably due to the weight difference and, in this video, possibly also due to the dirtier left side of the road - the BMW starts much further to the left on the road. However, the i4 M50 seems to be generally superior at higher speeds. There are videos of the i4 M50 doing 100-200 km/h in about 8 seconds. The Model 3 Performance takes about 11 seconds to do this. For some markets of BMWs, the i4 accepts voice commands for climate control. "Hey BMW, set temperature to 18 Celsius." I assume he lives in England. No car is perfect. Both are great. Good to have alternative choices. I wish the Model 3 were a hatchback sedan though. I cancelled my order due to that. I had an used Model S for a while. It gets boring and annoying that you have to going through screens to just control the speed of windshield wipers. That is really backward. A software based company really has a lot to learn from other veteran car manufacturers since it is 50% hardware and 50% software. So both companies have to learn from each other and make better cars for us - the consumers - in the future. For now, I pass the Model 3. It lacks good easy controls for many functions. Controls that we use daily should be a one-touch process only, but using the central screen of the Model 3 means also taking eyes off from the road and many finger prints. Meanwhile, BMW needs to make its space more efficiently designed so that there is a more usable frunk and no central tunnel sticking up in the middle of the second row seats. For luxury and quality, BMW wins hands down. Both car appeal to people of different needs. I can imagine someone like me who is more hatchback inclined would love to buy the i4. However, to someone that don't need easy access to trunk such as my coworkers who don't even open they trunk in a month, those people probably don't care if it is a hatchback or not. Choices are great. Make more great cars for us - the consumers - please. Thank you.

BMW: sharing its platform with the ICE cars just proves to me that the legacy car makers drag their infrastructure behind them like a prisoners ball and chain. It will drag them down. Tesla leads and will do so for the (near) future imho.

@@myles6235 O, but there is way more than just the platform. Why Tesla will be the best in the (near) future: speed of innovation (carbon fiber in the motor, octovalve, gigapress, weight reduction, 4680 cells, structural integration, ...). Continuous improvement of models. Agile to the core. Most and best vertical integration (e.g: made them less vulnerable for chip shortages). No legacy infrastructure, culture, dealers, .. dragging them down. Led within an engineering culture, not a finance culture. The biggest and fastest growing dataset to train FSD. They develop their own neural network chip (in car and in DOJO). Develop their own training supercomputer (DOJO). They have their own and fast growing charging network with the best user experience. They have the most valuable corporate brand (known to have the most visionairy leader who has the superpower to bring the vision to action; the best people want to work for Tesla; it is known that no legacy car maker would even think of making EV's if it wasn't for Tesla; they have a clear and compelling mission; they are seen as the true leader of electrifying the car/energy market; they are seen as the most innovative; they have the fastest production car ...) ... and therefore: the demand for Tesla is huge. Even without advertising! Tesla is the most profitable per car made. Tesla has the best software and hardware in their cars and they are the direct owner of it (it is not outsourced). They are building production capacity at a rate you can't even imagine. Inevitable conclusion: Tesla is in the lead and I think it will be very very hard to catch up for legacy car companies. And I even didn't mention their battery business (grid and domestic), solar panel business, the potential to monetize their AI knowledge and infrastructure, ...

@@edme1055 Alright theres way too much here to unpack everything, and honestly people like you aren't worth my time. But I will say this: 1) Firstly, saying Tesla's aren't outsorced is a lie. Panasonic makes their batteries.. 2) SSC Tuatara has reached a top speed of 316mph. Koenigsegg Gemera does 0-60 in 1.9 seconds flat withount 1 foot rollout subtracted. 1.99 seconds 5-60 isn't the fastest in the world. 3) Your claim that no legacy car manufacturer would make EVs withount Tesla is just bullshit. There were EVs before Tesla and there were EV concepts from legacy brands far before Tesla. 4) The most valuable corporate brand? Also bullshit. Elon isn't known for producing anything. He's known for saying he'll produce something, then completely failing to do so. Need examples? I have plenty. 2020 roadster? It's been 5 years and we've heard nothing. Cybertruck? Official release date removed from the website. Hyperloop? Failed concept, with failed exaction. Just go look at vegas loop videos. The revolutionary traffic solving hyperloop where Teslas can move 150mph fully autonomously is, in reality, a tunnel underground where someone behind the wheel can take tourists going 25mph. The revolutionary leader who currently holds the world record for the most net worth lost in a single year? How do you lose 100 million dollars of net worth in less than a year... 5) For the aforementioned reasons, don't bring up solar panels or AI. Tesla claimed to have solar roof panels on homes by 2015. Where are they? They demonstrated supposed solar roof panes that Elon claimed were functioning. Later revealed to be non-functioning prototypes aimed at giving customers and idea for what they would look like. Tesla has 'produced' 7 cars. 4 of which are unique. 1 of which rides on the same platform as another. and 2 of which are total concepts that have never touched the consumer.

The road noise and wind noise is unbearable, the suspension is so harsh and uncomfortable. The design and packaging however is amazing, especially taking into consideration of its exterior dimension.
