BMW E21 320i Volvo Girling 4 Piston Caliper Upgrade | Track day prep Episode 2 for the E21 in 4K!

The saga continues getting my 1983 BMW E21 320i M42 Turbo suitable for high speed track action (only 4 days to go!). Last week we upgraded the rear calipers to newer E30 parts and put in EBC Yellowstuff brake pads. During the test drive we found the passenger right front caliper was dragging and I managed to break a bleeder screw off the left front (video here! • E21 rear caliper upgra... ). So today we get some remanned Volvo Girling calipers slapped on...but not without MORE issues being discovered!
The calipers are from a 1990 Volvo 240, non-ABS version. You can pick them up remanufactured relatively cheap at normal auto parts stores (in the US at least) and you can also find more high performance brake pad options for these (at least I could!).

    I just did the front brakes on mine. The original calipers with the original caliper bolts. I had to use thin wall sockets to get them off. Replaced them with button head Allen bolts. Could solve your brake pad overhang issue

    This is a great idea! Will look into this, already have a bit of wear on these pads, but something I’ll consider for sure when I do the rotors and pads agaon.

    Thanks! I did not paint them…considered it, but the car itself is very much like a piece of rough hewn lumber, highly functional but rough visually so I let the appearance take on a naturally distressed look :)

    @@AdamPE21 I painted mine. I had a set of Hartge ones that where dual piston. I am going to be upgrading them to the 2004 GTO calipers which are a direct bolt one and ever better

    I couldnt find any when i looked i ended up spending a fortune on aftermarket. Could you not use a slightly larger disc ?

    I was thinking about that, though I believe the E21 has an odd offset for the front rotor. The hat is taller than most, but yes would be nice to find something slightly larger.

    Im doing this upgrade right now, i wonder if i will be able to use these calipers with stock 13" turbines 🤔🤔. Do you ever try?

    “Touchy” subject! Personally I was able to get them to work with the turbines, but I had to shave down outer part of the caliper with a file. At that time I think I also had 20mm spacers on as well. I only run the turbines offroad now, which I haven’t done in 10 years or so, currently running 15” ESM BBS knockoffs.

    @lagunasecae92m3 Yes, it was very close and it worked for me but took a lot of grinding & filing for sure.
