Berlin Marathon 2023 Race: Crushing PRs and Conquering Challenges!
🏃‍♂️ Join me in this exhilarating virtual run of the BMW Berlin Marathon 2023, where we conquered the course, overcame challenges, and shattered personal records by a whopping 20 minutes! 🔥
Last year's Berlin Marathon was a disaster, but this year, I was better prepared than ever! 🙌 With back-to-back entries through the lottery, I had the advantage of experience on my side.
I meticulously planned my fueling strategy, opting for 3 gels per hour, totaling 12 gels. A mix of gels, bananas, and Maurten drink gave me the flexibility I needed to ensure I didn't run low on fuel, especially since the race only offered one gel station at km 27.5.
The weather on race day was a bit mild for the season, starting cloudy but clearing up as I ran. The course was a pleasant surprise, featuring plenty of natural tree cover and tall buildings that shielded me from the sun. 🌳🌆
Throughout the race, I felt strong and in control, even cranking up the speed to a tempo pace for the final 2km and sprinting the last 0.2km. I crossed the finish line triumphantly in 3 hours 55 minutes and 59 seconds.
But, like any marathon, there were moments of challenge. I encountered a bit of light-headedness and tingling, which I suspect was due to the caffeine in some of the gels. Thankfully, I had a few caffeine-free gels and that km 27.5 Maurten gel to help me recover. Lesson learned, no more caffeine gels for me!
The Berlin Marathon is known for its flat and fast course, making it one of the most popular races for setting new personal records and even world records. Here's a description of the Berlin Marathon route:
Start: The race traditionally starts at the iconic Brandenburg Gate, a historic and architectural marvel. Runners gather here, with thousands of spectators cheering them on as they prepare to embark on their 26.2-mile journey.
Kilometer 1-5: The race kicks off heading west along Strasse des 17. Juni, a wide and picturesque boulevard that leads past many famous landmarks. It's relatively flat at this point, allowing runners to settle into their pace.
Kilometer 5-10: As you continue along Strasse des 17. Juni, you'll pass the Tiergarten Park, a beautiful green oasis in the heart of Berlin. The course remains mostly flat and scenic during this stretch.
Kilometer 10-15: You'll head southward, running along the Landwehr Canal. This part of the course offers some picturesque views of the water and tree-lined paths. It's still relatively flat and continues to be a comfortable section for runners.
Kilometer 15-20: At around the 15-kilometer mark, you'll start to make your way east towards Potsdamer Platz. This area showcases modern Berlin with its skyscrapers and contemporary architecture. It's a bit more urban but still relatively flat.
Kilometer 20-25: Heading further east, you'll reach Checkpoint Charlie and cross the Spree River. The course becomes even more scenic here, with views of the river and historic landmarks. The terrain remains flat.
Kilometer 25-30: This section takes you through Friedrichshain, known for its vibrant atmosphere and trendy neighborhoods. Runners will pass by the East Side Gallery, a famous stretch of the Berlin Wall covered in colorful murals.
Kilometer 30-35: The route then crosses the Oberbaum Bridge, offering stunning views of the River Spree. This part of the course features some slight inclines, but nothing too challenging.
Kilometer 35-40: You'll enter the heart of Kreuzberg, a diverse and lively district known for its cultural scene. This section remains relatively flat, with the crowd support helping to carry runners toward the finish line.
Kilometer 40-42.195: As you approach the final stretch, the course heads back toward the city center, passing the famous Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral) and the TV Tower. The final kilometers are mostly flat, allowing runners to dig deep and push for the finish.
Finish: The race concludes back at the iconic Brandenburg Gate, where the triumphant finishers are greeted by the cheers of spectators and the satisfaction of completing one of the world's most renowned marathons.
The Berlin Marathon route is celebrated for its speed, beautiful scenery, and the potential for setting new personal bests. It offers a mix of historic and modern Berlin, making it a truly memorable experience for all participants.

Hi, The Average Runner! First of all, congratulations on your impressive performance in the Berlin Marathon and the excellent quality of your videos. I’m a runner and a wedding photographer on the Costa Brava, and you inspire me a lot to start recording my own runs with my GoPro. I have a few questions about your setup, if you don’t mind sharing more details: Do you find the camera uncomfortable on your head during the run? Have you had to adjust your running technique to prevent the camera from bouncing? I saw you mentioned using a power bank in the video, how do you carry it connected without the cable being an issue? Thanks for your time and keep up the great work!

The best way I've found to keep the camera stable is to wear a hat. I've tried running without one, and the camera just feels sloppy on my head. In terms of running form, it hasn't altered my natural cadence in any way. That said, it is a good reminder when I'm getting tired: to maintain proper form 🙌 As to how comfortable, it's usually not noticeable except on days when my hair is feeling "sensitive" and the hat itches. But I suppose that's just normal and has nothing to do with the camera. For the battery, I tuck it away in my running belt and string the cable around to my back and up to my hat. This keeps the cable from getting in the way of anything, and if it does bounce, it does so in a non-obtrusive way. Enjoy your running! 🏃‍♂️

It's a really fun route. Put my name in the lottery again for next year. Doubtful I'd get in 3 years in a row when some people still haven't been accepted at all!

I used a GoPro Hero11 with an external battery hooked up via USB. It was simply mounted on my head. The GoPro did most of the horizon leveling and stabilization. I did have to post process to further level the horizon but not too much.

@@TheAverageRunner I was using gels with more than 40g of carbohydrates and there came a point in the race that I was saturated, I am considering going below 30 but with a frequency of approximately 3 per hour... thank you for sharing your experience.
