BMW auto opening TRUNK DIY

This video I will show you how to make your trunk/boot automatically open with the click of your key fob. This feature is very common in many newer BMWs. I thought it would be very cool to add it to my e46. This DIY is incredibly cheap and very easy to do.

I did this to my 2001 330d back in 2016 and it worked great....for 3 days. The springs were the same, but there is something very important that me and the guy in the video forgot about. There has to be a washer between the bottom part of the spring and the strut, becouse the spring will notch its self in to the plastic bit. Trust me. ;)

Great idea!! unfortunately I tried this on a 2006 330Ci Conv. and it didn't work. Make sure how much room you have between to mount and the strut piston when compressed. for me it was about a 1/4 in so not enough room for the spring. looking for a shorter piston strut to make this work.

I was hunting around for 316 stainless washers to complete this job because rust sucks, but I was going to have to order a box of 50 for $$. Rather than doing that, I poked around my local Home Depot and found nylon washers instead. You want SKU 595075, 5/16 in. You need two 3 packs in order to get 4 washers. They fit both the rod and the strut diameter perfectly. Right now, my trunk jumps up about 2 inches but doesn't open completely. I'll replace my struts next. If that doesn't do the job, I'll upgrade from blue springs to the next higher spring rate, red. Hopefully I don't have to go further to green which has an even higher spring rate. I'll report back once I have more info.

Do attempt this on a 2005 330ci Convetible. You will break both your shock bases and deform both shock mount attachment points. I ordered from this link, and just attempted to install, the trunk would not close because the springs take up too much space even when fully compressed and damage will result at the attachment screwed on base as well as the trunk's metal attachment blades. You have been warned.

  • @lostinstxusa5694

Installed the blue springs on my 2003 540i M Sport. When the trunk opens now, it comes up about an inch, but that's all. Does that possibly mean my struts are going bad, or the cheap springs I bought might not actually be rated at 156lbs? You have a very good idea. Thank-you.

Just some info, the spring in the link is not exactly the spring that is in the video. after doing this I realized that my trunk wasn't closing. looking closer at the video it looks like the one from the link has one more "ring" than the one in the video. I did however shave a little bit off of the ball end linkage and it went in a little making it work. my struts are a bit old so it didn't shoot open but it props it up about 6 inches so you can see the trunk is open. This is fine with me though cuz I mainly just didn't like that it was never apparent if the trunk is open or closed and lifting it up isn't too big of a deal. Edit: mine stopped popping up that little bit. I’ll update this when I get new struts.

Great video and trick. However I was unable to find such springs from Europe. I did find 5/8" Hole diam, 3,5/8" Rod diam, 1 3/8" Free length compression springs. Do you think those will work if I shave the item to 1" length?

Good afternoon Evan. I have a question about the springs you installed to open the trunk lid. What size and diameter of the springs ie height and diameter or what are they suitable substitutes for. Thanks in advance for your reply.
