BMW 328i E90 How to replace Coolant reservoir N51/N52K E91 E92 E93 2006 - 2013

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I will replace coolant reservoir on a 328i E90 with the N51 SULEV engine. This will be the same procedure for the E91, E92 and E93. Even if its has the N52K engine.
Parts:
17-13-7-640-514 Coolant Reservoir
17-11-7-639-020 Coolant Reservoir Cap
82-14-1-467-704 Gallon of BMW OEM coolant
Tools:
3/8" ratchet: amzn.to/3h9zshn
- I recommend getting a ratchet with a flex head. This provides ease of movement and more flexibility,
especially when used with other jobs
3/8" extension set: amzn.to/3Fxtnoq
10mm Socket 3/8": amzn.to/436Yu45
or
10mm Socket 3/8" Deep Magnetic: amzn.to/43NF9VS
Craftsman Pick set: amzn.to/3W0etwl
Pocket Screw Driver : amzn.to/3HkKHym
- This is a combo kit comes with a small Philips screwdriver. We will only need the flathead but this is the best value for the price
Flat head screw driver: amzn.to/3iJpp32

    How do you replace that red gauge that pops up out of the coolant showing the leve? My sons came out when I lifted it to see how high it would go, but coolant was low, so it didn't like it when the float came out of coolant, I actually think it broke what was holding it on as I used needle nose pliers to push it back on, but it is soo brittle it broke one little piece off, which leads me to believe what ever plugged into the float to attach the level/meter broke due to the brittle issue. I'm over splaining but my son just bought his first car w/ his own loot and I feel bad I broke it, well hehe I don't think I broke it but if you own a car and don't think things are going to break, I got newz for ya. Anywho, this video is incredible, subbed, commented, obviously, liked and shared, if you can maybe point me to a video that shows that Id really appreciate it. Awesome content A+++ in my book.

    Thank you for the support I greatly appreciate it. And don’t worry the more info you give a mechanic the better and faster he can fix your issue. As for the float issue. It would be best to replace the entire coolant reservoir and cap. There is no sufficient repair I can provide to fix the float reliably. Luckily it’s not too hard of a job and the part isn’t too expensive. Let me know if I can help further.

    Thank you! So far, I’ve replaced the valve cover gasket, window washer fluid filler hose, spark plugs, ignition coils, coolant reservoir, and cabin filter. This vehicle is much easier to work on than a Ford. But, I’m curious if there is a troubleshooting book out there? Versus me taking it to BMW. Since they wanted 13k to fix it, I’ve done most of it for much less. I’m wanting to know a better way to test all the sensors? A voltmeter maybe?

  • @friendlymechanic9778

    @friendlymechanic9778

    That’s awesome! Doing your own work would greatly reduce the cost of ownership. The repairs on your BMW are not hard to do either. I think it’s just having the confidence or seeing someone do it. A simple volt meter can give you good readings quick. But to test can bus signals you would need a much better meter a fluke 88 or 89 would be able you capture fast can bus signals. There are great videos on KZread that can help you understand how to use those meters as they are a bit confusing. This meter is not necessary unless you do run into can bus issues. So I wouldn’t invest in this just yet. I would stick to a much less expensive volt meter. A simple code reader would be good to have as well. Again you can get real fancy here but for the most part is not necessary. If your budget allows even some 100.00 scanners nowadays give a lot of good information such as current freeze frame data and live voltage readings on certain sensors. What other repairs do you need to do on your car?

    It could be the coolant level sensor is maybe unplugged or if the coolant reservoir is not genuine it could be a problem with the new reservoir level sensor. If possible scan the car and check what the code is

  • @friendlymechanic9778

    @friendlymechanic9778

    It’s possible. I’ve seen a few things contribute to the water pump not turning on Either a loose ground at the ground wire for the water pump. The one held on by the E14 or E12 forget which size. Non oem water pump Corrosion in the connector. Or the check engine light is on because there is a blockage internally.

    Usually on these reservoirs it’s the sensor that gives out. Rarely is it the control unit. But I would remove the connector and measure across both pins with an Ohm meter and check for continuity. If the reservoir has coolant at the full mark and there is an open circuit you have a bad coolant level switch.

    Yes those coolant hoses do go bad. There is a small chance that the coolant leak can be due to reservoir. Most likely it is the coolant hose though. Not a bad idea to replace both if it is pretty old and showing signs of age.

    It can be if the coolant is running low. Not enough coolant in the system will overheat the engine. Other possibilities could be the electric water pump or electric fan not working.
