Kindred spirits in some ways. Maybe discovering Syd so early, in the 80s, helped Coxon deal with the meteoric trajectory of Blur. "A weak & fragile bridge" is a wonderfully evocative description. The deep dive continues.

Did BLUR rip off Syd Barrett? Or did they admire him for his stuff? What about the STONES then - did they copy rythm & blues, or did they add to it? BLUR loved not only Syd Barret but of course the BEATLES. Like so many other people. But BLUR really made something great of their own from it. It is like an inheritance, isn't it? Syd isn't dead yet...

I think Syd bridged R&B and folk rooted in medieval English pastoral minstrelsy. Here and there it is a bit harder tougher and weirder and even more individualistic than R&B, elsewhere and other places Syd is very primitive and whimsical and dreamily glorifying the simple beauties of nature and the company of friends and lovers.

The people who survived include some who planned it. Noel Gallagher had the outline of a lot of songs by the time they hit, so he knew they would go on until the third album & that was the stumbling block. Nobody writes well drugged. It’s kidology at that point. I love early Syd. The later work, it hurts sometimes to listen. It’s too close. His difficulties are common, just most of us aren’t having our moments or eras in public.

Graham, and SO many artists across the world have clearly been inspired (and influenced) by Syd and the subsequent work created by The Pink Floyd. This is not a RIP off, it’s inspiration, it’s a homage, it’s celebratory and the planting of another seed for musical evolution and remembrance. To say “Blur RIP off Syd” is ridiculous, and shows you clearly don’t understand the importance of music culture and history to not only musicians, but to simple music lovers just like ourselves.

Ima say it… syds music is way overrated. He wrote some good tunes but for the most part, his legacy is inflated by this romanticized idea of the tortured artist and the mystery behind his mental state.

I disagree, at least personally as it was more the songwriting and willingness to experiment that made me gravitate towards his music and not really the “lore”. I think his genius is more in stylistic approaches and inventive thinking, than technical musical command. My mind was blown when I first heard see Emily play and I couldn’t even believe it was the same group that did DSOTM.
