Translation (part1). (I'll try my best, but: the French voice-over doesn't correspond exactly to what the band said in English + my mother tongue is not English + if sometimes it doesn't seem to make sense it's not forcefully a mistake of mine: people often use weird phrasing in interviews.) Antoine de Caunes (main show host): Tonight, we have a legendary British pop band! They've split up, they've patched things up, now they're getting back on top with an impressive eighth album that is released today: The Magic Whip! This is the first one they've recorded all together in 16 years. They'll play an extract to us as an exclusive but before, please make some noise for the great Dave, Alex, Graham and Damon, aka Blur! (...) Good evening gentlemen! Listen, wait a minute, wait a minute! Let's take some time to talk. Everyone is absolutely delighted to have you, but you know that tonight, there is an excruciating suspense, what's happening in England? Will there be a new little prince or a little princess? Perhaps a mix? What's you four's prognosis? Alex James: Well, you know, we've had a female Prime minister so, wouldn't it be incredible to have a gay monarch, or maybe a half-man, half-woman monarch? (I thought I heard Alex say "transgender", I'm not sure though. The voice-over says that instead). A.De Caunes: Damon? Damon Albarn: Morrissey. A. De Caunes: Morrissey, very well, very good choice. Dave Rowntree: It's funny, I don't know if it's the same in France, but in England we can bet on pretty much everything. So now we can bet on the name of the next royal baby. I've done some research, I didn't come empty-handed. And the first five names are: Alice, Charlotte, Elizabeth, sorry I can't-, Victoria -I couldn't read my own handwriting-, and James. So four of the top five are girl's names. But you can also bet on who will be the next Mayor of London. And I'm making a bet at a hundred to one odds that it will be the same thing as Tony Blair! So there we are. A. De Caunes: Very well! Graham? Your prognosis? A prince or a princess? Graham Coxon: Yeah, probably... It will be a small, bald, egg-laying dog. A. De Caunes: Well that's great news. So before we go further, Damien Cabrespines (a journalist) has explored the epic of Blur. Let's see what it looks like with these few images. The video starts: Journalist: They've sold out stadiums, they've sold millions of records, they've argued, they've torn each other apart and then patched things up, they're called Blur. (Dave: We all come from families with one sister and no brother. We've kind of become each other's surrogate brothers, really.) Journalist: Damon, Graham, Alex and Dave, four mates who met at the end of the 1980s and who very quickly became the kings of a new sound made in UK: Britpop. Facing the American grunge tidal wave, Britpop relied on cool, sexy beats and devastating guitar riffs. In 1994, the song "Girls and Boys" was a hit and their album Parklife was at the top of the sales. In 1995, the war broke out with Oasis. (News anchor: Blur and Oasis released singles on the same day!) Journalist: Blur won the battle of the single. (Alex James: Hello we're Blur, we're number one!) Journalist: Oasis won the battle of the album. In 1997, fans were confused by Song 2: Blur had become rock, Blur was experimenting. The band worked with the producer William Orbit for the album 13. In 2003, Graham left the group, so they continued the adventure with three members. In the middle of the 2000s the band broke up. In june 2009, Blur made a triumphant comeback during an ephemeral concert in Hyde Park. But today they're all coming back together with a new album. An extremely long-awaited comeback, definitely one of the main musical events of 2015. The Magic Whip was released this morning, the fans have waited for this for 12 years. End of the video. A.De Caunes: The Magic Whip was released this morning and it is indeed a very important musical event. So, hang on, I would like to go back. We're in May 2013, you're in Asia, a concert has just been cancelled, and then all of a sudden you meet up in a small, shabby studio. You start recording tracks again: that's how it all starts, right, because of a promoter who fucked up? (silence) One of you four can answer! Graham Coxon: Yeah, that's true, that's how it began, just because of a concert that had been cancelled, the promoter did fuck up. We went for five days into this studio in Honk Kong and played four hours a day. A little bit like that, basically. A De Caunes: So what happened exactly in this studio? During those four days in total immersion? Dave Rowntree: Well, we can see what happened! We spent five days working as hard as we could, trying to write nice songs as we used to do in the old days. We were trying to record as much as we could. Those were quite long days but we had fun. It was kind of like how it used to be, Blur in the early days, when we spent so much time together working in the studio. A. De Caunes: The great, early Blur, the one that we can find in the Magic Whip. Blur: it's a long story, it's an old band. Alex James: With a happy ending! Someone: The end?! A.De Caunes: Yes, with a happy ending. It’s had its ups and downs. But we all know that in rock’n’roll, getting a band back together is always a little risky. For example, Morrissey -that you mentioned earlier, Damon, said that he’d rather eat his own balls than getting the Smiths back together. Literally, literally! And on top of that he's a vegetarian! Could you have been driven to such extremes? Alex James: What, with Morrissey’s testicles? Dave Rowntree: Oh no, I’d rather we reunited without having to eat testicles. Alex James: I think- Damon Albarn: I’ve eaten ram’s testicles. Pickled (the voice-over translates this into: with hot peppers on top). So I would pickle them. A.De Caunes: Was it tasty? Damon Albarn: Oh, that was fantastic. So I’d pickle Morrissey’s testicles. A.De Caunes: Alright, that wasn’t the initial meaning of my question, but whatever. So we’ll move on with Augustin.

(Part2) Augustin Trapenard: Since we’re talking about Morrissey and the Smiths, is there a band you love that you’d like to see reforming? Who would it be, would it be the Smiths? Damon Albarn: Well, obviously the Smiths, so we could watch Morrissey eat his own balls. Alex James: Abba! I’d pay to see that! And also the classic Take That line-up. Augustin Trapenard: One Direction, Graham, perhaps? Female journalist: The Spice Girls! Other male journalist: Supergrass, you like Supergrass? Graham Coxon: I want the Beatles to reform! A. De Caunes: I was sure you were going to answer that, I knew it! Isn’t it true that every time you ask yourself a question, it’s ‘what would the Beatles have done’? But it’s hard considering the possibility of the Beatles reforming, Graham, I’ll be honest with you! Graham Coxon: No, it’s not. They did a song when one of them had died already. I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to do that again with a little more of them dead. A. De Caunes: Graham, you said that your comeback makes you feel closer to the Monty Pythons than the Rolling Stones. I would like to know why. Graham Coxon: Yeah, that’s me at the back, right there! I said that because, perhaps because we’re English, we have a default setting about anything which is: everything is absurd. And although we take our art very seriously, as people we don’t take ourselves very seriously. A little bit like them. A. De Caunes: I might also add that Eric Idle, one of the Monty Pythons, who participated in the Tribeca Film Festival in New York this weekend, took an epic picture on the red carpet, look at that! With his wife. They’ve been happily married since 1977. Alex James: He’s back on tour alright. Graham Coxon: Did you say they are happily (I thought I heard him say heavily? But it doesn't make sense. I guess it's his accent, I'm more used to American accents) married? A. De Caunes: Happily! Female journalist: So, the story between Damon and you, Graham, started in secondary school, in Colchester. There was a sort of artistic love at first sight, that Graham talked about in the documentary “No Distance left to Run”. It happened at a school’s show, let’s watch. Damon Albarn: Oh no. The video begins. (Graham Coxon: The first time I saw him was in a school assembly. He was the main boy of the gang. I definitely immediately thought: “My gosh! What an amazingly confident performer!” and also “Gosh, what a show-off!”) Female journalist: Here it is! Graham, we can agree on the fact that this was splendid! Damon played Zeus: when you saw that, you found it irresistible, right? You thought, I want to do things with this lad. Damon Albarn: He was in the same play: it’s “Orpheus in the underworld” by Offenbach. Graham Coxon: I was Styx, I think. Damon Albarn: He was Styx, who was the gatekeeper to the underground. I mean, yes, to the underground. Female journalist: And was it at that moment that you started to want to do stuff together? Damon Albarn: ...Hell. Female journalist: Yeah, you were God and he was hell! Graham Coxon: I think we were doing stuff already. This was later in our career. Damon Albarn: All I remember about that was that my mum took a long time making a lightning bolt out of tin foil. And there was a coarse woollen beard, too. She put a lot of time into it. Female journalist: What we can see in that documentary is a strong dramatic intensity, it’s almost like watching a romantic comedy because there are crises, there are break-ups, things that are left unsaid- Damon Albarn: Very intense. Female journalist: And there’s of course this moment in Glastonbury, and we can see Damon feeling particularly moved during this reunion. So we think to ourselves: after all, Blur is indeed a passionate love story. Was it how you experienced it? A. De Caunes: Was it how you four experienced it? Alex James: That was a very special moment. Oh no, don’t show that, it will make me cry as well. And the second time you split up is the worst, apparently. Damon Albarn: To put it this way, we’ve had a good break from each other and now we’re enjoying making music and performing together. Performing in the Zénith (big French concert venue) for example. As for me, Paris, over the last decade, has been like a second home. A. De Caunes: And with an eighth album that you described as the “blurriest” one, that’s quite difficult to translate, but like, the Blurriest of the Blur. Anyway, um, it’s very Blur, right. So here you go, now try to carry on after that, guys. Damon Albarn: Well, my mind was quite blurry at the time. Like last week on his radio program (he points at at the radio host Augustin Trapenard). A. De Caunes: Yeah well, that was because you had had a rough night!

(Part 3, the last one) Other male journalist: I was just thinking about the fact that in “C’est à vous” (another French TV show) they have Francis Cabrel (an old, definitely not hip French singer) and here we have Blur, you have to admit we’re on another level. Nevertheless… Damon, you said something really great in an interview, yes, I swear, it happened: you said that gentrification/adoption of middle-class values is the worst plague for an artist. And that’s true, even here in the dressing rooms we have MDMA, there are cupcakes, we get pampered, we are protected. So to overcome that, some members of the band have other solutions, exploring unusual lands. Alex, for example. Alex’s thing is cheese, as simple as that. You produce cheese by the way, here, we can see you cooking with Chef Jamie Oliver, a nice little video. (… Sorry I’m getting lazy, just listen to the video about cheese…) Other male journalist: So, other risk, other bet, other boldness: it’s Dave. So Dave, you are a lawyer in real life, and sometimes you are the DJ in bachelorette parties in Moscow. We came across this video. So, here are the girls. Damon Albarn: I didn’t know that you did that! (I’m pretty sure that’s what he says) Dave Rowntree: (I can't hear what he replies) Female journalist: Hey, it’s from Justice (a French electronic music duo. The song Dave was playing is called "We are your friends")! It’s French! Other male journalist: We still see the girls, one is going to get married, I don’t know which one… And then, bingo, here he is! Dave Rowntree: Hey, it was a brilliant night! Other male journalist: I have a question now: in your opinion, to avoid ending up like Muse or Coldplay, do you have to refuse cosiness/comfort, do you have to try new things? I’m asking this to the four of you. Let’s go. (silence) Perhaps there’s no answer to this. You don’t forcefully have to... You know, there are questions that we don’t know the answer to! Antoine De Caunes: No, the answer is coming, it’s coming. Dave Rowntree: Our relationship is kind of like music, isn’t it: we need intensity, we also need to put effort into it, we need some space too. The four of us have this incredible situation now, each of us; we have moments of musical intensity and moments when we get some space. We have both. A. Believe me, the interview is not good at all, they keep making fun of the interviewer with absurd answers out of boredom... Their questions are all about gossip and trivia when they expect at least one serious question about music

+azulmidnightful The interviewer asks what are their opinion about the royal baby, if it will be a boy, a girl or a mix of the two. Alex says something like "we already had a woman prime minister, so a gay monarch would be extraodinary, no?". And they ask Damon and he answers "Morrissey". (I think Damon doesn't give a fuck about the royal baby).

C est assez flippant toutes ces erreurs. Je viens de regarder l'intw de gorillaz dans quotidien en 2017 et le nombre de fautes de traduction de l'interprète est hallucinant. Il arrive à dire le contraire de ce que Damon disait...

+shana schwartz +cactaceous Gawd... does nobody speak french anymore? Ok so the guy (who btw was being a total dick in a way that seem to be very characteristic to the french) started by saying that Damon once said in an interview that being bourgois is the worst enemy of art (or something along those lines, I watched this a long time ago) and then proceeded to make fun of Alex and Dave for their side-projects (as you can see). The question was if to not end up like Coldplay and Muse you need to give up a certain comfort in life. *crickets*** And then blur's lawyer answered the question in very diplomatic no answer way. I love how alex was super pissed (and rightly so) so damon started kicking him under the table/cheering him up.

I wish I could speak French! What is "bourgois"? Doesn't it mean middle-class? That word isn't used here in the USA in everyday conversation, unless you're taking an academic course. How does Alex and Dave having side projects make them "bougois" or middle-class? Wow, the French chat shows seems much more intelligent than US chat shows. :(
