Музыка

Incredible banjo, guitar and fiddle player, Jimmy Arnold. One of my absolute favourite banjo players. This is his story.

The small town that Jimmy Arnold grew up in near Galax Virginia is called Fries and pronounced Freeze. Jimmy's first recording with the Twin County Partners on the Stark label was a 45 single not an album. The Tattoo Parlour which he opened later in his life where the bust took place was in Falmouth, VA., not North Carolina. The film of Jimmy towards the end was filmed by Carlton Haney in Reidsville, N.C.

My cousins were very deeply involved in bluegrass music during the 60s and 70s, so I’ve heard a lot about how talented Jimmy was; I probably even saw him perform, but I was too young to remember much about it. Very sad story, but thanks for sharing it. By the way, I’ve always heard it pronounced as “freeze” Virginia, even though it’s spelled “Fries”.

yes, "freeze" is the only way i've ever heard it. when i was young, i tried pronouncing it as "fries" but was quickly corrected.

A very rhythmic and syncopated banjo player who offered something new to bluegrass, such a shame how things happened for him. A great and inspirational musician.
