Dude! I kept trying to get into BOC by listening to the first 3 albums over and over again. They never clicked with me. Cultosaurus Erectus was the album that finally hooked me. I thought I was crazy because I didn’t connect right away with the first three. Thanks for another great video.

Great video. You had me laughing as you ripped on Imaginos (which I actually like). I agree with you about "Redeemed" on the debut. It reminds me of "Sun Arise" off of Coop's Love It To Death, in that both songs are goofy kinda folky endings to otherwise great albums. I mostly agree with you about their best songs. "Perfect Water," "Shadow of California," "The Old Gods Return," "I Love The Night," and "Don't Turn Your Back" are all amazing. My all-time fav BOC song is "The Vigil." Last but not least, huge congrats on your engagement. :)

B.O.C. is easily in my top 10 bands along with Priest, Maiden, Sabbath and Rush. Worst to best B.O.C. albums vary widely among fans, so be it. That said, here's mine: 1. Cultosaurus Erectus (Monsters) 2. Fire of Unknown Origin (Veteran of The Psychic Wars) 3. Tyranny and Mutation (7 Screaming Diz-Busters) 4. Spectres (Death Valley Nights) 5. Secret Treaties (Astronomy) 6. Heaven Forbid (Power Underneath Despair) 7. Imaginos (In The Presence of Another World) 8. The Symbol Remains (The Alchemist) 9. Blue Oyster Cult (Workshop of The Telescopes) 10. Agents of Fortune (Sinful Love) 11. Mirrors (The Vigil) 12. Club Ninja (Madness to The Method) 13. The Revolution By Night (Shadow of California) 14. Curse of The Hidden Mirror (The Old Gods Return)

Yeah, I'm having my BoC love affair late in life.....in a way I'm lucky! Hahaha.....anyway your controversial choices are making me think I need to get the later albums too so thanks for sticking to your guns! Your love for them is very apparent. I can't choose between Fire and Agents for my number one (Spectres--top 5 for sure).....but those black and white albums are seriously growing on me. I had no Idea BoC were this good!!!!

Your back stories on how you discovered the band, along with your anecdote of listening / discovering Spectres at your friends with the black lights and the haze, and your Cultösaurus description is one for the books. Your enthusiasm for one of my all time favorite bands, Rocks! You could double for a young Jack Black, on any given day. I am on the same page with you on Spectres, and Agents, which are my 2 personal favorites and period of the band, along with OYFOOYK, which gave those first 3 albums an Adrenaline / Nitro / Turbo Boost🔥🚀‼️ they so righteously deserved. Amazing video dude on my fav band of all time. Loved the prequel intro how you got into BOC. Always good to have an insight to the early beginning of how fans are attracted to their bands. I was lucky enough to see BOC 3 times in the UK on the Spectres tour. One of the few to see the full laser show on that tour at the Liverpool Empire, Astronomy with lasers WOW, and Godzilla drum Solo with Godzilla head on Albert under strobe lighting, jaw dropping. Saw them again that year in Manchester and Sheffield, but Alas health and safety lot got their for these later concerts and said lasers and strobes a danger, but grateful to see full show in Liverpool. Hence totally agree dude Spectres number One. And agree too on the all time favourite "I Love The Night". Only major difference is Imaginos, played the vinyl off that one, and mirrors can't stand it, covered in dust now . Cheers for this 1 hour 5 mins 5 secs thoroughly enjoyed it Mick

Let's see... Curse of the Hidden Mirror, Heaven Forbid and Club Ninja all in the bottom 3, with Revolution by Night right after? Check. Tyranny and Mutation at number 1? Close. The Symbol Remains respectfully ranked? Check. Fire of Unknown Origin near the top? Eh... Overall, this is easily my favorite of the rankings here. I would bump Fire of Unknown Origin up, and Secret Treaties down (I've never been quite as fond of it as everybody else seems to be), but other than that, I think everything is in negotiable territory for me. Blue Oyster Cult is one of those bands where I'm just not capable of ranking all their albums. Aside from the couple at the top and the several I feel are comparatively lackluster, they have a bunch of albums that are too close to definitely call, and which will shift around depending on my mood.

@@DickTwatkins I mean, when it comes right down to it, there's no objective truth in musical preference; it's all subjective. But I can simultaneously believe that and believe my taste is better than yours. And since it's pretty pointless debating things according to an "all musical taste is subjective" model, that puts us squarely into the "my taste is better than yours" model. And just to make sure my taste actually is better than yours, I just double checked, and I agree with every decision I made, while your decisions don't score nearly as well. If that isn't definitive proof, I don't know what is. I mean, we could have somebody else double check the decisions, but are we really going to trust the opinion of somebody who hasn't already been verified as being correct 100% of the time? That just doesn't make any sense. So Tyranny and Mutation is clearly BOC's best album. It's been incontrovertibly confirmed.

GREAT VIDEO! Thank God, someone else agrees with me that 'Imaginos' was one hell of a mess. I prefer to listen to Albert's original demo of the material. I'm a bit surprised that you ranked the first album so low. The only stinker on the album was "Redeemed", a song that they bought from someone for whatever reason. I suspect maybe it was the strange, murky production that turns you off...a mostly midrange mix. But, as was engraved on the original run-off groove of the vinyl..."Play it loud!" Also glad to see the Tyranny album ranked low. Side 1 is awesome, while Side 2 is mostly snooze. I catch a lot of flak online with this opinion. I also gotta say that the phrase "Behind the back, behind the bush" is a damned funny line that I've never noticed, thanks for pointing that out! As far as the movie "The Stoned Age", take it from someone who was actually there...that's what it was really like in the late '70s. I've seen a lot of films trying to depict that era, and they all failed. It's my favorite film depicting that era of my late teens. "Mirrors"....I actually listened to it again 2 nights ago. Great pop songs. The big problem is Werman's production. I can hear how a lot of these songs could have been produced to actually sound like BOC instead of a '70s pop cover band. And those horrid female backing vocals, totally out of place. Big goof calling Martin Birch "Tom Werman" as producer on the 'Cultosaurus Erectus' album. Hey, it's cool Bro, we all make mistakes ;) The top 5 are always hard to pick. I switch them back and forth...they're all that good. Ultimately, 'Secret Treaties' is my favorite (BTW, "Cagey Cretins" is probably their most underrated song...give it another listen and crank it up!). But sometimes, 'Spectres' is my top pick. Maybe I consider it a tie. But it's so cool that a guy half of my age has such a grasp of how this awesome stuff stacks up when compared to itself. Keep up the good work!

Secret Treaties is my favourite too...but I like Imaginos and think its underrated. If you didn’t know the story and history around that album, and you didn’t know a lot of non-BOC musicians and session players are on it, do you think that you might like that album a little better? Because I don’t think that album is a ‘mess’, I like the dark and gothic feel of it with an 80s flavour. But its a mess in terms of how it got to eventually get made.

It showed the original band back together with the original producer, and some other musicians listed as well...which wasn't unusual. But something just didn't seem right, and I wondered why in the world would they redo "Astronomy" and "Subhuman"...and the other songs weren't that great. The whole album seemed disjointed, especially when compared to other releases. As the years passed, the details have come out, and seems to validate my initial reaction to the album. Imagine if a movie had been made the same way...old footage mixed with new footage with new actors, etc...that would never work either. There are some good moments on the album; keep in mind that a ranking of a band's output is relative their output, but maybe not a good measure of quality as compared to other bands' output. I would certainly rather listen to 'Imaginos' than any album by Journey, for example ;)

Fair enough- I really like I Am the One You Warned Me Of, In the Presence..., Del Rio’s Song, The Siege... and Magna of Illusion on it. I like the dramatic ‘gothic rock musical’ atmosphere of the album although I can understand others thinking its overdone and over produced. I also agree its relative to the strength of BOC’s catalogue. Personally I’d put it above the debut, Mirrors, Revolution by Night, Club Ninja and Tyranny & Mutation (may be sacrilege!) though!

@@DickTwatkins I tend to agree about the production. My first introduction into the band was also Fire of Unknown Origin, but it was in ‘81 when it came out. I then bought ETL the following year and that introduced me to the back catalog. My favorite song (by far) was Cities on Flame. I then went and purchased the entire catalog (at the time) from ‘72-‘80. Was somewhat shocked when I heard the production on the debut. Unlike yourself, Alberts voice may be my least favorite, definitely behind Eric and Buck. For that reason right there, the sound of Cities on Flame from the first album just wasn’t quite right. I love the album, content-wise. It’s not at the top of my list, but it’s in the top half, for sure.

My favourite Blue Oyster Cult album is Fire of Unknown Origin Several of the songs were intended for the soundtrack of the animated film Heavy Metal, such as "Vengeance (The Pact)," the lyrics of which follow in detail the plot of the "Taarna" segment of the movie Which is why the producers did not pick the song because it gave the plot away.. However, only the song "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" ironically not written for the film, co-written by science fiction author Michael Moorcock, ended up in the film's final version and soundtrack The phrase "...veteran of a Thousand Psychic Wars" is from the Hawkwind song "Standing at the Edge," from the album Warrior on the Edge of Time (1975), which dealt with the myth of the Eternal Champion and contained lyrics written by Moorcock. Hawkwind is also Lemmy Kilmister frist band. Veterans is the third song Eric and Michael had worked together. Frist being The Great Sun Jester from Mirrors and second being Black Blade from Cultosaurus Erectus. The lyric for Black Blade is based on a character in Moorcock's books called Elric of Melniboné, who carries a sword called Stormbringer that feeds off the souls of its victims. The frist time I saw BOC was for Club Ninja they open for Ozzy and out performed Ozzy.

Exactly how many "hits" did this album render? In its 3rd year, it's almost forgotten. I've seen numerous opinions and "content creators" who have reviewed this album rather negatively. The difference, I think, lies in the reviewers' ages. To those who grew up with BOC. BOC, it's not. It sounds like a cheap copy tying to appeal to a modern rock audience. The "replacement" musicians lack the musical skills of the original crew. They are just employees. It's an album that tries too hard and fails due to its lack of musicianship, which it tries to placate with theatrics. Then there are tunes like " Box for a head". It doesn't even blend well for an album with "heavy" pretenses. It's too pop. If you can't hear the difference between the original bands material and this, you are tone deaf at least.
